I looked around to see if there was a more appropriate place on this forum to ask for Tech help. If there is and I somehow missed it then I'm the biggest n00b in the place...

But seriously I need help with this freaking Open Office file I got.

Ugh. Does anyone here know how to open a supposedly locked Open Office
file? I was typing happily when suddenly there was a power surge that
shut down my computer. When I rebooted, Open Office did an automatic
file recovery. So I'm like "Ok well at least the file wasn't lost." But
when I try to open it I get a dialog box saying "ASCII Filter Options"
then it has a scroll down for Character Set, Default Font, Language and
Paragraph Break. I didn't really know what to do so I simply pressed OK.

Then an error box pops up saying "Document in Use"

"File Name" is locked for editing by Unknown User.

Then I get the option of opening it as "Read Only" or "Open Copy"

...Well I choose Read Only and everything I wrote is gone. Replaced
with ################## all the way down for several pages. Well this only confused me more. But I know it isn't a good
thing. So I closed the document without saving anything. But Now I've
lost over 3 pages worth of work. Arg this is totally unfair. Why did it
have to just randomly corrupt like that? And what if it happens again?

I'm hoping that since I didn't save over anything it might be possible to recover this document. Is there any hope?

Could be bad text encoding. If only you could change the settings for the encoding after the fact.

For character encoding, choose UTF-8 if it gives that option.

Doing a quick google search, you can see if anything here may help.

Wait, wait, hang on:

I knew I'd seen this before.

Didn't make the connection between the two different usernames until just now, I must admit.
