Zedniks Neck Is Sliced by Teammates Skate
Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik had surgery to close a deep gash on the right side of his neck after he was cut by a teammates skate during a game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.
The surgery was successful and hes resting comfortably in the hospital, the Panthers spokesman Brian Goldman said.

Blood gushed from Zedniks neck after he was hurt midway through the third period of Buffalos 5-3 home victory. The game was delayed about 15 minutes. There was a brief discussion during the delay between the N.H.L. vice president Colin Campbell, Buffalo General Manager Darcy Regier and the referee Bill McCreary about whether the game should be stopped.

Zednik was behind the play and skating into the right corner of the Sabres zone when his teammate Olli Jokinen was upended by Sabres forward Clarke MacArthur. Jokinen fell headfirst to the ice, and his right leg flew up and struck Zednik on the side of the neck.

Clutching his neck, Zednik immediately raced to the Florida bench, leaving a long trail of blood. Arriving at the bench, he nearly fell into the arms of a team trainer, who quickly applied a towel to the cut. Zednik was then helped off the ice by the trainer and his teammate Jassen Cullimore, and immediately escorted to the Panthers dressing room.

We shouldnt have finished the game, Jokinen said. I saw the replay, that it was my skate that hit him in the throat. I think we were all in shock. Ive never seen anything like that.

In a statement, the N.H.L. said that Campbell talked to Commissioner Gary Bettman and decided to continue the game after knowing that Zednik was stable, that trainers had stopped the bleeding and that the teams were willing to go on.

I dont know if there is a right answer, I dont know, Buffalo Coach Lindy Ruff said. I can fully understand if they wanted to cancel the whole game."

Pictures. (Blood warning)

Holy damn, I can't believe he was even able skate off of the ice.

Yup we saw the video in my lab. Actually it's the second time this has happened. Back in 1989 (not sure) some other guy got cut in the neck with a skate. I think he died (again not sure...).

For a carotid artery injury, we were all surprised he skated out before he collapsed and even more amazed at the fact that he survived.

Yeah the other accident did happen in 1989 to Clint Malarchuk, but he didn't die, he had about 300 stitches to close up his jugular injury.

Saw this on the news the other day. It's amazing (not to mention horible) to see how fast blood comes out of a wound like that.
