It would probably be something like Syobon-Action. Basically, same as you're used to Mario-style platforming. The catch is, this game is out to screw you over with as many cheap deaths as it possibly can - not really difficult platforming, but the fact that almost everything is a trap that'll make you kill yourself. The challenge here becomes figuring out how to win, especially at the ends of levels when things can continue to kill you even after you've slid down the pole and are walking to the castle. All the deaths are actually hilarious the first few times, and the gameplay seems to evolve into "outsmarting" all the cheap traps the game has laid out.

Don't give up - it's only four levels long, and every level is winnable. You just have to figure out how. You also have infinite lives, or rather it just keeps counting down after you hit zero into negative numbers.

Controls are simple - left goes left, right goes right, up jumps, and you can hold the spacebar down to speed the game up if you're waiting on something to happen. I'm using JoyToKey so I can use a controller to play, myself.

My current record is finishing with negative 24 lives.

It's okay if the game doesn't have enough fighter jets and patriotism for you to not put completely needless and annoying negativity into my topic, I love you despite your internal flaws of personality ^_^

My friend and I spent like an hour or two or so playing through this the other month. We managed to beat it with negative 200-something lives. Hilarious game. There are some parts that are almost impossible to figure out, but we managed. It was very refreshing once figured out!

Most fun could most likely be had playing your first time through, with others. If I was playing it alone, I'd probably give up or something. It probably loses its luster a bit after you've played through it once and already know what to do and what lies ahead. But it's a great play-through the first time!

Why did I make this post. It didn't come out how I thought it would . GRAME. OLAY GOOD FUN .

This was LPed on Something Awful a while back and I played it while watching the videos from the thread.

Very good fun, even if it did take me over 200 deaths to complete even with prior knowledge of some of the solutions. :D

There's another one of these in a similar vein, except Flash-based with Shift-JIS graphics and mixing elements of a few different platformers, including Mario and Megaman. Can't for the life of me remember the name of it, began with an o and with in Japanese. Quite possibly even harder than this one.

Bonus fun time option: hit 0 on the start screen for a randomly generated level! It's also quite trivial to replace the graphics, music and sound effects with your own (they're all stored as .pngs and .mp3s in subfolders of the install directory) if you so desire.

This is hilarious. XD How do you get past the pole ghost on the first level?

Spoilers (Select To Read): Since walking into the flag pole means you're destined to run into the ghost, the solution lies in getting to the other side of the pole without hitting it. Jump straight up at the edge of the brick stairs to get the yellow line thing out of the way first, when do the longest jump you can to get over the flagpole. This'll trigger the ghost, but if you're careful you can avoid it and then jump back on the flagpole from the other side, clearing the level.

Bubsy Bobcat?

Level 1 is kind of stupidly cheap but the others are quite funny. Where does the music come from? Spoilers (Select To Read): Level 3 boss is cool. Level 4 is obviously ghouls n ghosts.

From an NES game called Spelunker, which (like remixing the Cheetahmen theme) was/is a meme in Japan. I think it was due to how easily your character could die (pretty easily).

Official remix project?
(language warnings)

There's also this Japanese one.
(I think it needs to be purchased though)
(not sure where / how)
(The mp3s there are demos I am most pretty sure)
(money spending warnings)

Oh goodness, yes. I played this and it's incredibly hard. It's rather well done though. :)
