I bet some here are familiar with World of Warcraft (WoW). Now, I am seeking guidance on what it entails. For example, how much is the game and how much is it to play each month (30-day subscription thing). I'm still thinking it'll be cheaper than buying myself a Wii with all the games and software I want. XD How lost will I be if I start playing now and don't buy one of those game guides?

World of Warcraft Mountain Dew Game Fuel Promotion
In the near future, you'll be able to see World of Warcraft characters in a new place -- the beverage aisle. This summer, Mountain Dew will launch Game Fuel in two World of Warcraft-inspired flavors -- Alliance Blue (wild fruit flavor) and Horde Red (citrus cherry flavor) -- available for a limited time only. We'll be announcing further details in the coming months, so stay tuned.
Aggie NO! You want to keep your soul, don't you?!
Get a Wii. It may cost a bit more money up front but it will be higher quality gaming and more importantly cost FAR less time.
I haven't been to WoW. I went to the site once due to others' recommendations but the setting and ugly art style turned me off. However, these types of games are a scam that will give you a lot of fun for a few levels and then turn into a hamster wheel.
If you have to pay for it more than once, it's not worth it.
I've played. I can see the appeal for many, but eventually I just found myself grinding to level as if it were a chore. Seriously, I woke up and said "Damn, my friends want me to go up 5 levels today... I better put in a great movie". The game is fun, yes, and if I took it at my own pace and didn't have to keep up with people who played non-stop it'd be even better. For $15 a month though? I can live without it. Seeing as how I'm out of friends in this town, and I may be upgrading my computer once more I'll probably get back into it, but those are a very social breed of game, and if I don't have normal friends to play with, whats the point?
But... the Wii has Smash Brothers, No More Heroes, Madworld, and an awesome version of RE4. Lots more variety. =3

Are you saying I don't have a soul? =(
If you can find a free 30-day trail for it, get it. It seems to be a bit of a marmite game. My Dad got a trial for it and gave it a go and he got sick of it before the 30 days were even up so~
I personally haven't given it a go but I watched my Dad play it and it seemed pretty boring to me... =/
A better suggestion: go for the Nintendo DS. Or a Game Boy Advance, if you want to play GBC-era and prior games.
I've not had the opportunity to play WoW, so I only speak from a vague experience of City of Heroes and Diablo 1/2's online modes.
These games are only fun with friends. I mean, it's implied with the whole "massively multiplayer" thing, but it needs stating. In a typical MMRPG the best way to gain items and EXP (besides flashing your virtual boobs in exchange for armor) is to go on campiegn missions which only work well with an organized team.
Which means you either have to meet friends from outside the game inside the game or you have to befriend people in the game.
Then you have to weed through the people who will hang with you so you don't have any LEEEEEEEEROY JENKINS!!! style aggro-idiots or healers who can not spell team work, let alone understand the concept.
Then you have to align your play schedule to match theirs so you can do this on a regular basis.
Then... you play. Forever. There is no end.
So basically it's a social networking scenario with axes and orcs, a frustrating and addicting level and item drop system which will eat at every facet of your existance unt-
Oh dear Jesus. I have to obtain and play Diablo again.
DAMN IT, YOU RELAPSED ME!
WoW is the bringer of lifelessness. If you play any mmorpg, play Phantasy Star Universe. It's fun! that, and sonic team actually didn't screw this game up, they just need to Update it once and a while.
No. They did screw it up. The item drop rate and the item combine and the percentage of creating an item are horrendous. I hear they've fixed this a bit, but it's too late for me.
Stick with BlueBurst (hooray for actually updated private, populated servers!!!)
PSU is great fun.. come join usss~! 😮
(last night i helped out some newbies. the poor guys couldn't even afford good armour, so gave 'em all the meseta i had on me at the time. always nice to be able to treat others like that.. so many people helped me out when i was new. ^.^ )
I second the playing of PSU, because for one thing I play it and for another it's cheaper than WoW. And yes, with AotI and some patches, a lot of the annoying stuff has been fixed.
Plus it's finally becoming a lot more community-oriented, thank goodness.
plus..!
:3
Some of my friends used to play WoW. They talked about it all the time. It's good to have a common interest with others that you can talk about. Gaming should always be, in some sense, a social experience, but this was starting to alienate a bunch of their other friends.
Some of those friends abruptly stopped playing. Now they have lives again. But still, they talk about it all the time. THey still keep up with the news of what new patches are released and various gameplay strategies and minutiae. It's kind of annoying.
I did the trial, completely free, back when my friends were still in the game. It was kind of fun but I had more or less completely lost interest by the end of the first week. I had better things to do and I didn't want to get to the point where I as paying for the game so I felt obligated to play it. A game should never be like that.
Give it a whirl, see if you're interested. I'm not, but if it's your cup of tea then go for it.
By the way, I second Ultra's suggestion. The DS has a zillion awesome games. GBA and earlier have even more. It's crazy.
Thanks for all the replies. After careful thought and considering all options I've decided not to Wow. Why? I have no time and it might be too expensive. Actually a hand-held gaming console like the N-DS or I dunno what sounds pretty good but I still want DDR XD
I still think Wow is an awesome game that would suck me in and I would be very happy playing it.
I still think Wow is an awesome game that would suck me in and my family and friends and significant other would not be happy I'm playing it.
Fixed.
Pre-order a DSi, that way you're up to speed and you can take naked pictures of yourself and send them to other friends!!! Or moon them. That's what I'd do.
Ah, the mmo question. I can see you decided correctly but the bottom line is this. Do you know a fair number of people that play regularly? If not, don't bother. So long as you know people to play with, you're fine with any MMO. Even ridiculously instanced ones like PSU and Fusionfall.
Yeah, you can factor time and money, but you can also FIND those if you want. People to play with. If yes. Then yes. If no. Then no.
~Rico (I remember when SW:G was almost good.)
I play WoW, and it's not the soul-killer everyone says it to be. It doesn't grab EVERYONE by the throat and forces them to play for hours on end, that only works on the weak-minded, and if that happens to you, well, sucks to be you.
But with that said, I have played other MMOs, too. City of Heroes/Villains? Hated it, clunky controls, not very good graphics, I found no join in it at all despite what it promised. Warhammer: Age of Reckoning: WoW Clone, with all of it focused on pvp. If I wanted to get ganked all the time, I'd roll on a pvp server, that's what it's there for.
As for PSU, I tried to like it, I really did, as I owned it for the 360. However, the online play for it was pretty crappy on the 360. Eventually I got it for the PC as urged by SS, but alas, it refused to work on my computer.
At the moment, I'm currently kind of looking forward to Aion, as a couple of my mates want to give that a try.
you can't get it to work? perhaps i could get some people to help you over on a PSU forum i go to.. what errors and etc were you getting?
I don't know what it was - it was some time ago, so I've forgotten what it was.
perhaps if you tried again..? ^^
It had something to do with his copy of Windows XP not being legit as I recall :3
More specifically though, it was to do with GameGuard being dumb and messing things up. I remember some component of it didn't like him for some reason or another.
I need to play PSU some. It was a fun little game. Ten bucks a month isn't a bad price for something I know people in. And Becca, don't listen to Spiner about City of Heroes. It's one of the better MMO's out there, it's just costly at that 15 a month mark. If you consider leaving PSU I can get some CoH footage of Foxboy running around leaping city blocks and such. ~Tobe
Well dang, I suppose i need to hook up with you other Pashooers. I'm not hard to find, leave a message in my room. If you go to the shop, look up something like... shigga damduc or b'duki hadoc. I have like the only ones for sale, lol.
PC or 360, Fex? Cos if you're on 360 we shall never meet. =(
Otherwise, what's your char name? ;p
Fexus Autumn, of course. I play on ps2, because I did try on 360 but it was crap, and I don't have a pc, at least not one that can run the game. I do have the pc game however. Might have to find some way to use it since the supplemental update will be out eventually.
My main's a shameless clone of Suiseiseki, who goes by the name of Robo-Desu. I'm usually found online during weekends and late in the evening UK time. :3
CoH footage of Foxboy running around leaping city blocks and such.
Post it! 😛
the infamously named StD (shred the darkness) will be coming up soonish. what's your player name? my main is Becca-An, but as i share an account with will, you could also look up Will Nonhiem.
i sometimes put scrolls up for sale in my shop. oddly enough people come to my room to tell me that they're overpriced for a 3-star item.. and yet mine are nearly always the cheapest on the player market at 1-2 million. >-> *sparkles*
warning.. if you get into a party with me, ian and brybry.. beware us spamming ':3' frequently. it got to the point the other day when a random guy in a lobby started to beg me to stop when i only posted ONE. kekeke~
i demand this footage of building leaping ricos.
