"Giant possible doomsday weapon"? Seriously? I remember last semester asking my physics professors about it and they said it's pretty safe. I can't help but think that what's really going on here is fear of the unknown...
Planes are pretty safe and they still crash.
Also, it is partially fear of the unknown, but mostly that the scientists building the machine are trying to make something that could divide by 0. I'd rather not be suddenly sucked into a black hole, eradicated by explosion, etc.
