Source: Yahoo News!

Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead have been going to Riverdale
High School for a loooooong time (Archie Comics was founded in 1939).
But throughout the gang's illustrious academic career, they have never
had a classmate who was openly gay. Until now.

In a move that is generating a lot of buzz on the Web, the publishers of Archie Comics recently announced that they are bringing in an openly gay character, Kevin Keller, starting with the September issue.

What's the plot? According to CNN,
new-guy Kevin beats Jughead in a burger-eating contest. For whatever
reason, this act of intestinal fortitude impresses the raven-haired
Veronica. She begins to pursue Kevin, who, for obvious reasons, isn't
interested. Kevin must find ways to deflect her affection without being
mean, but Veronica, used to winning, doesn't give up easily. Hilarity
ensues, until Kevin finally confides in Jughead that he is gay.

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater remarked,
"The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie
Comics current and inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always
been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly
gay character in Archie comic books."

The announcement inspired an influx of searches. Web lookups on "archie comics" soared 82% and related lookups on "archie comics gay character" surged 125%. And don't look for Kevin to show up for just a few issues and then never be heard from again. The New York Times reports that Kevin is more than a one-off character. There are future stories already mapped out.

hmm..... i like plots like that with juicy mangas but westren comics???
i dont know, it might not be a tasty addition but feel like a political correction obvious stunt which will ruin the fantasy.

but then again i dont read archie comics and dont know for sure.

What Tiggerkiddo said, even if I'm surprised that such a Mom, picket fences and apple pie title as Archie had the nerve to do this.

Why does it feel like political correctness to represent a proportion of the population that hasn't been represented before and that other people might identify with?

Why is it only kewl when manga artists do it?

I'd consider it more weird if somebody didn't meet a homosexual at all before they were 18, which is what this is trying to correct.

"Why does it feel like political correctness to represent a proportion of the population that hasn't been represented before and that other people might identify with?"

its how they'll present them, i just fear that poor kevin keller's only aspect is being gay. i want them to give his character as much depth and character as the others. what i like about manga's describtions is you dont only like the character for what they are but who they are or how they look like. what we normally fall for in reality too.
but if this new character doesnt stand out in other aspects then being gay then i will see it as a sad attempt to be open minded when the writers arent really so.

yeah i get it, and i support equallity. but i worry they'll make the image of a gay person awkward.
in real life its natural to meet diverse people. but in cartoons or comics its up to the artists, will they picture it correctly or cause it to be awkward? i feel like in the archie comic they might do the latter.

First of all, WHO CARES. Gays are people too. Although I am not gay, I still am offended by crude comments against gay people. I also hate the hell out of using "gay" as a derogatory term.

um... epi, dear we arent talking about gay rights here, we're saying how they're putting a gay character in a comic and to my knowledge this is the first in westren comic history.
im just worried they wont pull it off as nicely as mangas have.

Hm... yeah, it doesn't seem like the Archie thing to do, but still, I don't read Archie often but I'm not gonna care. Putting in a gay character, to me, is just as 'scandalous' (a term I am using lightly.) as putting in a new character. The last time I've seen them add a new main character to Archie was... well, never.

Just to point out, gay comic book characters have been around for a loooong time. Ignoring all the headlines regarding the lesbian Batwoman we had a while back, just pick up any issue of DC's Countdown to Final Crisis mega mash-up and have a look at any page with Trickster and Pied Piper.

The publicity the announcements bring always seem epic, but really it will change nothing. Remember when everyone was all OMG CAPTAIN AMERICA IS DEAD and then like about four people on this entire forum would know that Steve Rogers is alive and well and starting a new comic series as US Agent in summer.

Point is, it's shock value and though the trait may persist in the comic, interest in the comic will not really pick up very much and so when it's an established fact, no one will care.

I maybe tired, but the fact that they introduce him winning a hamburger eating contest makes me giggle repeatedly.

The fact is that Archie Comics have been "tackling" issues that effect people for years, the problem is that the writers chicken out and that these new characters end up being forgotten one hit wonders, whether it be about sex, religion or race (Which Archie dealt with like they would in the 1960's), Archie Comics will continue to focus only on the current "hot button" issue, then move on. (to the same plot for well over 80 years)

If you really think that, you desperately need to read more Western comics and you need to read more manga.

Try this (intro to this) or this for a starting point (or this for less characters but more detail).

Yeah, gay comic characters have been around since the 70s, it's nothing particularly new and of course it would take Archie about 40 years to catch up, I imagine in 2050 we can talk about Archie doing a parody of Lost.

Hahaha. I think Archie's been around longer than it should be. I mean, there's nothing EVER new about Archie...(except of course Kevin Keller?) maybe they should keep the "OMG THEY'VE BEEN DRAWN BY A NEW ARTIST" series (Truthfully called the "Dynamic New Look Series") and ditch the regular, but I just remembered... they're canceling that "DYNAMIC NEW LOOOK OMG" thing anyway... :-/

But, yeah. I read last month's Archie Digest, and the kid still talked like he was from the 1960s. (Gee mother, that'd be swell!)

well i meant in a none gay gener comic, like in mangas not just yaoi mangas have gay characters but also some shojo ones.
i never seen a westren comic in that sense, being aimed at straights with a gay character as a side character. although from what you and craig said i guess i'm not paying attention to it and might
be wrong. still i dont think it will appeal to my taste like in mangas.

although that last link you posted was interesting with the hulk in it XD
i have so many ideas for the hulk's sudden change of size..... eh better keep those stored in my head.

I guess I don't read enough Non-Marvel/Archie comic works.

You know, I've been wanting to get into an animated TV Manga, and you, Mada, seem to enjoy Mangas... so, what kind do you like, because I've been wanting to get into one.... do you have any suggestions? Maybe something with action... I have no idea where to start.

Sorry for such an Off-Topic post :/

um the comics i read are too complicated, dramatic and with art that's less popluar.. to me they are fun. but i'm sure you wont like them.
i have a different taste in anime and manga then most so i really cant help you. sorry epi.... maybe you should read a manga of an anime you like as a first timer.

So, none. 😛

If Archie is still around in 2050, a Lost parody would not be surprising, actually.

I highly doubt there's a ton of manga floating around that falls into all of these categories, it's usually just one of these. You want complicated and dramatic go read Watchmen, then we can talk about a complex and dramatic comic, but speaking from experience, most manga is far from TOO complicated, if anything it's just really drawn out (I mean the entire Soul Society arc in Bleach was what...15 volumes!)

well i meant in a none gay gener comic,

So did I, as you can see from those links (unless you're saying that both Marvel and the DCU're written for the gay market) - although I'm not sure what you mean by "gay genre".

I wouldn't define the genre of the comic by whether there're gay characters in it, and gay people can like reading about straight characters. And vice versa. If you're just dismissing something according to the sexuality of the characters, you're missing out. Sandman isn't a narrative that focuses unduly on homosexuality just because it's there in characters - neither's Watchmen.

like in mangas not just yaoi mangas have gay characters but also some shojo ones.

The female equivalent of yaoi is yuri - although again, I wouldn't define something purely by whether the characters're gay or not.

"The female equivalent of yaoi is yuri - although again, I wouldn't define something purely by whether the characters're gay or not"

hmm.... i dont know why but you seem like you cant understand my opinion. i'll try to explain again.

in japanese comics, regular comics (none gay comics) can contain gay side characters and the story works. i dont think westren comics can do that without making the gay side character seem dull and purely a political correctness addition.

so my opinion on the kevin keller character is that he might not be interesting.

.... i hope you get my view now.. although i have to say repeating stuff makes me confused..i hope i was clear this time though.

I get it, but I don't agree. I'm still not even sure how you're defining "gay comics".

Again, try reading something like Sandman, Hellblazer or The Question before you say that a gay character has to have no personality other than being gay and always has to be more about political correctness than narrative.

I dare you to call The Cluracan of Faerie or The Corinthian one-dimensional sops to political correctness - go on, I dare you. ;p

Yeah. I think that Soap Operas can bear great resemblance to some mangas, you know, storywise, and I have seen many gays in soaps. They are just as big a part of the story as any other character.

But, I do agree with Mada in the sense that I have also seen people mess up the characters, just the way she described it, and in the sense that I think it could easily happen with Archie.

I'm sorry, but the fact you start talking about soap operas in a discussion about a comic publishing company introducing a new character who happens to be Gay, then mention GAY Soap Operas has made me laugh FOREVER!

Thank You! XD

I love to make people laugh even if it IS at my constant stupidity. I don't know, I just see that comics that HAVE gay characters are usually dramas, like soap operas are, it was just a similarity I saw. But hey, I'm insane, so my opinions can easily be questioned.
