Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Park, has died aged 66 after being eaten by a T-Rex a "courageous and private battle against cancer", his family has said.

He penned the books Congo, Twister and the popular Jurassic Park trilogy, all of which were adapted into films.

His books have sold more than 150 million copies. He also created the long-running US hospital drama ER.

"He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched," his family said in a statement.

Granted, I never read any of his books, and I only watched the first Jurassic Park, but that's a real shame.

Aaaaw!! He was such a great author! I read the full-length Jurassic Park novel and enjoyed it even more than the movie that it inspired. RIP Michael

Michael Crichton's books were unique in the sense that I always felt compelled to drop everything until I finished reading them.

Rest in peace.

This certainly seems to be frustrating news, especially since I actually enjoyed watching the Jurassic Park movies, and going on the Jurassic Park ride on the Universal Studios Theme Park.
