Today I achieved something I've been working toward for a little more than a year now. I now work 9-5.

People may scoff at that, and say that's not much of an achievement. It is when your previous job involved you working from 2pm until anywhere in between 11:30pm and 1:30am.

When I first got out of college, it didn't seem that bad, it even seemed a little appealing to be working that late. I was always a bit of a night person, so I figured it would just be an extension of my college life.

Not the case at all. While it's easy to burn the midnight oil when you're living at home or when you're in a college dorm, and so many of your basic needs are provided for you, it's much harder to try and be a professional, living on your own, while working a night shift.

You need to make the decision of whether you want to primarily be awake before work, or after work. If you concentrate your conscious hours prior to work, you'll get more basic life things done, but you'll quickly find that you start to fade toward the end of your shift (and in my deadline-based industry, the end of your shift is the most important time to be alert, or you could end up in big trouble).

If you wake up for work and then stay awake far into the night, you'll have trouble getting very basic things done, such as buying groceries and essentials. Maybe it's not a problem for people in big cities, but here in the buttcrack of New Mexico, most stores close pretty early.

So I'm really excited to once again be working a 9-5 schedule. Today, I got off work, and went grocery shopping. I've never been able to go grocery shopping after work in my life.

Oh God, my life is horrible!

Congrats on the sane office hours, Srolykins. Heaven knows you've been putting up with the crazy mad hours long enough.

Even if the job sucks, the stability of a 9-5 is worth more in comfort than any perks of part time, erratic time and graveyard.

Thanks guys. This has been an amazing week. I've driven home from work in the afternoon every day with a smile on the my face. Even managed to forget that because of this schedule change, I worked 9 days in a row. Today (Friday) is day 9 of 9.

Split your free time in half between before and after work?

Wait a minute... so people really can work from 9am to 5pm? I thought that was just a hoax, i mean, people around here i know usually work from like... 7 or 8 to 4. 9 to 5 would be frikin awesome, because i wouldnt have to get up so damn early.

Well... when i DID work, i went in from "4pm to midnight" which was a total lie. more like 4pm to 4am. That's military for ya.

I used to work shift hours - but I had to give that up. I won't make the reasons public.

However, a 9-5 job is very good for the body as it gets you in a good routine for proper work and sleep hours (unless you're like me and just hate to sleep some nights)

I am not one of the working MoFoers, but what you have now sounds like something to fatally stab for! Good work ^O^

What is 9-5? Oh, a REAL job. How I yearn for one. I got to work today at 9am and it's 1:11 AM and I'm still working. No one up to talk to and no one in the chat to keep me company -.-
