Details to be covered on the 20th tankobon release.

The wraparound jacket band on the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga will confirm on Friday that a new television anime series is in the works. A new anime series was a topic of much fan discussion for several months, but it was thrust into a more public spotlight last month when a management document was purportedly leaked from the BONES anime studio. The document listed Fullmetal Alchemist animator Yasuhiro Irie as "Hagane 2 kantoku" (Iron/Fullmetal 2 director).

After the purported leak, BONES President Masahiko Minami posted an official statement that said that no file with this same formatted information existed within the company. When asked about the possibility of a sequel to Fullmetal Alchemist or Darker than BLACK (another BONES anime), Minami told ANN, "It hasn't been decided yet. We are interested in doing them. As original science-fiction works, they were extremely fascinating. With these kinds of dramatic story lines, I feel that there's a lot we could do potentially."

Viz Media will publish the 17th volume of the manga version in North America this October, while FUNimation Entertainment released both the first television series and its theatrical movie finale.

I'll keep an ear out, as I believe that the first like... seven... episodes of FMA had large potential and then it got STUPID. (Irredemably so when the gate started showing up)

If there's a new anime which avoids stupidity, then I'll be happy. The concept is really cool.

Of course, if it continues from the movie, then I wont even bother testing the ep.

Well, unlike Craig, I thought the TV show was brilliant and the movie a very satisfying endcap. As much as I'd like to see them deliver on the setup for a sequal they delivered at the end of the movie, I'm not certain if that would be the best fodder for a new ongoing series.

Anyway, I'm happy to take the wait-and-see approach.

Craig... Craig, Craig, Craig.

Craig! Did you see ALL OF FULLMETAL?! If you did and you say you didn't feel @#$! for the show, you are not human. Not human at ALL!

Craig and I are like, on opposite opinions. I loved Fullmetal, and can't stand Gundam Seed anymore. (That was you who liked Seed, right Craig? I might be mistaking you for someone else.)

I welcome the new series with open arms, be it sequel or manga adaption.

Hum... I'm pretty sure I read that the new anime was more or less confirmed to be an adaptation of the manga. The validity was high enough that people were arguing back and forth about how exactly one would accomplish such a thing: a full on reboot or to continue the series from somewhere in the middle, possibly alienating new viewers who may have missed out on the first series.

At least it's confirmed now to be airing on TV as opposed to a series of OVAs.

Yeah, it's me who adored Gundam SEED, though your "anymore" makes me wonder if you hated Destiny (in which, so did I) or you just stopped liking it after they landed on Earth, Fllay started being a slutty whorebag and Kira's angst was growing expodentially each episode (which, I admit to loving).

As for my Fullmetal complaints. My main problem came with the internal logic of the show. I'd argue my point again, but I've lost this arguement, against Srol no less, in the past and thusly conceed that I have a problem and that my complaints are my own.

But, yeah. I've seen all of the anime and it's movie and found them to be... stupid. Though, to be fair, I cannot remember why, besides the internal logic changing (I was particularly impressed with the idea of Ed's magic seals being built into his arm... then they just said "no, he saw the gate... so he can do it without seals, or something) and just a general hatred of many characters for being so unreasonably idiotic about breaking the alchemy laws.

Tell you what, though. I still have all the first season (Subs. Though I was watching the dub as it aired when it came to the UK) and can rewatch at any time, if I really am stupid in my opinion. I'm open to loving things, afterall, I'm still a Sonic fan afterall :3

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the manga STILL ongoing, and didn't the TV show diverge from the manga at episode 32ish because of this? If the manga is still ongoing, won't they just run into the same problem?

Furthermore, 32 episodes following the same plot? Better hope they skip the prologue.

EDIT: On a side note, I'll take credit for being the one who hooked Craig onto Gundam SEED in the first place. He went kicking and screaming at first, but ended up following Destiny on its downward spiral long after I had thrown up my arms and given up.

This too came up in discussion. General consensus is that anime studios should learn to wait until a manga completes before adapting it to a show, but... well, the "biz" is all about the now, you know? Why wait to make money when you can make it immediately?

Works for Naruto.... or doesn't, if Japanese TV ratings are anything to go by.

And I thank you for that, Srol.

Guaranteed, when they finally get that movie finished, I'll be cosplaying to either the theaters or the local Best Buy to pick up my copy.

...you cost me so damned much money in models, cosplay and DVDs... you... you... *HUG* Beautiful person, you.

This is why I tend to enjoy TV anime that is finite and has a set 13, 26, 50 episode length from the beginning. As opposed to the ones that just keep going and going (Naruto, Inuyasha, DBZ, etc)

A mix of all of that (die Flay DIE! plus not really liking the final episode of Seed due to sudden random death), though Destiny leaving an awful aftertaste would be the main culprit upon reflection.

Agrees with Ultra. While I haven't read any mangas of the animes I've watched, I've read enough on Wikipedia to know that the FMA anime and manga have diverged quite a bit from each other and therefore would love to watch an anime based on it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the One Piece anime a fairly faithful adaption of the manga? I know that One Piece is still an ongoing manga, and last I heard, both the anime and manga are still very popular in Japan.

i've pretty much given up on one piece as far as reading it goes, idk why i just never caught on to it like i did with naruto and bleach. but having an manga adaption of FMA would really rule, i kinda got sick of the anime after awhile. don't get me wrong, i thought it was awesome for awhile but then it became tedious.

am i the only person that didn't mind gundam seed destiny? sure the end battle felt like a rehash of the first series and there was not a whole lot of kira action, but it wasn't a bad anime in my opinion.

Technically One Piece should have stopped by now. Oda's keeping it going because he just loves the characters that much.

Kind of the opposite of Toriyama, who wanted to end DBZ at Frieza but was continually hounded to extend the story indefinitely.

The manga was an adaptation of the first anime, so I don't know where you heard this but it's incorrect. The manga hasn't even finished printing yet. The anime series is finished however, so maybe you confused the two?

Who told you that? The first volume of the manga came out in January '02. The first anime episode premiered in October '03. The manga had been running for a year when the anime debuted.

EDIT: Actually, that's not right. the first bound volume of the manga came out in January '02, but it had been serialized since January '01 in Square's manga magazine Monthly Shōnen Gangan. So really the manga had been running for two years when the anime started.

I own several volumes of the manga. It says it in the publishers notes...

That could be because in America the manga wasn't released until a year after the anime began airing on Adult Swim, but if you're looking at what was created first, the anime is most definately an adaptation of the manga.

I remember hearing that before, but I thought Oda kept going cuz fans wanted it not that he couldn't enjoy it all the same though. I also remember looking at RetroJunk, while One Piece was still on Fox, and it had One Piece ending in 09; I guess they wrote that before Oda kept going. Anyway, does that mean that the anime started after the manga was supposed to end and what arc was the manga supposed to end in?

I'm glad Toriyama kept it going, most fans are all "it should have ended when intended", but so many people adore the stuff added afterwards. SSJ2, Trunks, Mr. Satan/Hercule, Cell, fusion etc etc.

I mean. DBZ's highlight is Hercule in my mind, that guy is the true champion of Earth, given he's the ONLY CHARACTER ON THE ENTIRE PLANET who hasn't died at least once.

I have to admit, I enjoyed the Android arc thanks to all the time-traveling tomfoolery. Cell saga started out awesome, then slowly became mediocre until Gohan stepped up to the plate. Similarly, the Buu saga was tolerable until Gohan was forced out of the limelight for the sake of his father and Vegeta's showboating.

But it was obvious Toriyama truly gave it his all during the Saiyan and Namek arcs. The only thing that brought it done was the way the anime series would pad out with filler. 5 minutes my ass, Toei.

LF44, you should consider switching to Burger King. I know it doesn't taste as good, but it has less of an effect on your stomach.

I personally liked the Android and Cell sagas also. When it got to the Majin saga, everything just seemed to go stale. And I have yet to watch a single episode of GT.
