It's often argued on forums that someone's reacting just to a disagreement, or that they're offended because they disagree; obviously this would sometimes be sort of true, but I don't think it's as much so as it's made out to be.
I can think of examples on this site where I found views I didn't quite agree with somewhat refreshing. When talking to Dirk about that "Dumbledore gay" subject, IIRC my idea was "if that's how the author defines him that's what he is" and Dirk considered that a "pedestrian" view of fiction; I forget what his idea was, but while it was quite different from mine, it also felt a bit refreshing... at the time, for that matter, since I've looked at it a little differently since (for various reasons) too.
But maybe a better way to look at this would be the other way around; can you be offended by agreeing? Well, I can't think of a specific example on this site, but I've noticed some users on this site whose posts I've tended to agree with, yet as soon as the subject was myself I'd feel right offended by their tone. Like with Deckman, whose posts I saw I often tended to agree with, IIRC... yet when he was the guy responding to a remark of mine with his own "oh yeah well you're wrong most of the time anyway" remark, even after I thoroughly rebutalled that type of idea a while before, I not only felt offended by that, but seeing other posts of his I agreed with so much just felt weird... I really don't know how to describe it... anyone see what I'm trying to get at though?
I understand what you're saying. I've never really thought of this before. How interesting... Come to think of it, I have experienced being angry at someone's argument against OR for my side because the person didn't do it respectfully or something.
To put it simply: doesn't matter how logical or right you are, no one will want to listen to a jerk about it.
If someone whom you think is smart thinks you're dumb, should you still think they're smart? I mean, you're dumb, what would you know? And then you don't have to worry. Unless you consider that they may be wrong, in which case, you are dumb because you thought they were smart. And then you still don't have to worry.
Its like the old saying goes, taking the unpopular opinion means you're a troll!
Used improperly, the Internet could well bring about another Dark Age through pure misinformation.
