okay so this thead is about listing cartoons you choose a cartoon, you write it's title and next to it a picture or opening video and under it you give a summary of the story.
try not to mention the ending unless its obvious.
and please only anime or cartoons you have seen and think are totally good.. oh and describe their genere (e.g comedy, drama ...)
there's great anime and cartoons in the past, i still find more captivating than today's cartoons. .... anyway i'll start with old anime:
1- Aoi Blink http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qChXwAj1QH0
it's like the british famous tale Narnia, during WW2 a japanese boy gets sucked into a magical world, the differance is in this world time keeps changing and the boy wants to return home.. on the way he meets lots of friends, espacially the flying blue mule Blink.
2- Romeo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtvCkto3D5g
it's a story of a chiminy cleaner boy who fights gangs and deals with his adoptive evil family.. later in the story he meets another street kid with a sister, it turns out the kids are royality being chased by their evil uncle, so romeo and other chiminy boys try to help the two kids.
3- future boy conan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDwB0cS49dY&feature=related
this is the most loved anime of all time, miyzaki's greatest work... i was really happy to have met miyzakai last month just cause i love this cartoon.
it's set after WW3 when only a few humans survive, the boy was born after the tragedy. isolated in an island with his grandpa. on day a girl washed away on the beach comes to conan's world, being the first human other than his grandfather he ever seen he is attached to her. anyway bad guys come kill his grandfather and steal the girl to get information of her grandfathers whereabouts out of her ... conana goes beserk and set sail after her, he then goes to stop the evil fortress's plan to use solar energy to rule the world. this anime has drama and comedy to it.
4- rose of versailles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJhhVqaSPRk
based on the famous french queen mary antoinette's story with a side twist of facts... the main character is lady oscar, the daughter of the imperial general, her father rejected her as a girl and named her oscar and hid her gender raising her to be the next commander. she services the queen at first and they become close friends, but then she goes against her as mery obresses the people ..... the revolution happens and mery is beheaded at the end of the story... this story has a lot of emotion to it, it shows how people were obressed and how oscar falls in love with the queens lover... it's tragic drama.. not for kids this show was so good, it has a movie.
5- Macross http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL8mnvS54Qc&feature=fvst
an alien giant city sized robot falls on earth, after restoring it's engines and building flying robot transforming planes from it's technology, a race of aliens attack earth to get the alien super technology. the people living next to the macross go inside it and the macross teleports to space.... somewhere near satrun i think, anyway they try to fly back to earth while encountring the aliens... the real twist in the story is the aliens are super giants that were engineered to fight, they don't know anything about love or music. so when they see the hero kissing the girl or when they hear minimay's songs they get too shocked to attack.. some of the aliens even decide to want to join the humans to get some of that.
6- Isami http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lGTE6jvV9U&feature=related
it's a comedy Ninja show, the girl Isami finds a lightsaber hidden in her house with other 2 magic weapons... as she and her two friends start using them to fight evil and look for isami's father, the evil masked gang "The Crows" send their ninja's to retrieve the magic weapons.
7- Memoru http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKwgSu5py8E
if you see the new anime sugar snow fairy, you'd know this is the original story..... Memoru and her village of pixies are aliens who land on earth with their tiny spaceship they start living in mushrooms deep in the woods, a very ill rich human girl finds them and becomes friends with memoru and keeps their existance a secret. so, they help each other out and meet human and animals with problems and try to solve them. it's a very cute story. there's romance and of course an evil girl that wants to discover the secret of the pixies.
8- chibi maruko chan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Si0CTXlqoU
the japanese most famous icon, i had the manga and tv show VHS too.... anyway the story: she's a little japanese girl from a common family, that deals with everyday issues that little school girls go through, from being teased in school to wanting to train canaries to sit on her shoulders... basically a girl with huge imagination, that every idea she has backfires and gets her in trouble, this cartoon is the funniest most relasitc of all.... the art might look simple but the show is amazing.
1- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles http://www.metacafe.com/w...age_mutant_ninja_turtle/ Hayul yeah!
This show is just.....so much of my nostalgic memory is somehow linked to the Turtles. But probably not the way Eastman and Laird would have hoped. Not the toys, not the comic, not even the movies. THIS cartoon was the turtles for me. I've probably got a bunch of eps recorded somewhere in a box but I plan on buying the dvd's... Anyway the story was pretty simple. Master Splinter (Yoshi) finds baby turtles in sewer covered in glowing goo and raises them to be ninjas. Their enemy is The Shredder, Krang, and a bunch of other villians like Lord Dregg. The show was very light hearted yet still manages to be epic even today. (In my opinion at least. But even today this show has a large loyal fanbase) Though the animation quality of this show didn't age well and and if you played a drinking game based on animation and VA errors, you'd be piss drunk in the first five episodes. Fans of the comic hated it because it was a really big departure from the Mirage originals. I don't even the creators liked this show. But heck it's nowhere near as bad as "The Next Mutation" ugh. The Turtles franchise would have been forgotten along with the likes of....Street Sharks, Biker Mice from Mars and Extreme Dinosaurs if it wasn't for this show.
In total it sported 193 episodes and lasted 10 seasons. The longest running cartoon of it's time. It's record was broken by the Simpsons 2 years after its cancellation.
2- Swat Kats http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_AdxJWFUh4
This was also a really cool show by Hanna-Barbera about two jet fighter super hero cats who defend "MegaKat City" from your typical comic book style enemies. The main one being some scary Skeletor looking dude named Dark Kat. The main characters are T-Bone (Chance Furlong) and Razor (Jake Clawson), 2 ex military jet pilots who were decommissioned to work in a salvage yard by their really stupid egotistical commander because he screwed up a mission and made them take the fall for it. The episodes usually consist of one time or recurring villians showing up to wreck the city or try and take total control with the Swat Kats flying in and saving the day. A simple plot but I still really enjoyed it. (My favorite bad guys were the Metallikats )
And just like the 80's Turtles April O'Neil, this show had a character named Callie Briggs who I swear everyone had a crush on. I also think this show had a toe in anime character design before anime was cool in America. It's easy to see in the female characters. Swat Katz only lasted 2 seasons with twenty-five finished episodes, a special episode and 3 unfinished episodes that you can finally find the scripts for online somewhere. Also when the show was cancelled Ted Turner had this to say. "We have more cartoons than anybody: The Flintstones, The Jetsons, the Smurfs, Scooby-Doo. They're nonviolent. We don't have to worry that we're encouraging kids to kill each other - like SOME of the other cartoon programs do." Make of that what you will.
3- Mighty Max (lol why did I watch so many boy cartoons?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NR2OIltppY
I have fond memories of this show but to be honest I'd probably have to rewatch the series before I could give you any facts. It sat somewhere between the valley of light hearted and dark just like Swat Kats . Max is deemed the "cap bearer" and he has to travel across the world (or time?) to stop the Skull Master (lol what is it with skeletons in these old cartoons) his two friends are Virgil, an owl bird thing and Norman who is a giant viking bodyguard kinda guy. I can't even remember if Max beats SkullMaster in the final episode. I think Virgil and Norman die...and then Max goes back in time and....it basically starts all over? Mighty Max lasted 2 seasons with 40 episodes and I think it was considered the "boy" alternative to Polly Pocket.
That's all for now. I can probably think of a lot more but I gotta go.

You beat me to it That show had the highest death count I can recall for a children's cartoon. Gotta love Norman and his arachnophobia. Tony Jay (Fowl, actually!) at his best; Tim Curry having a ball as Skullmaster and, of course, one of my favourite voice actors, Rob Paulsen as Max (using the same voice he uses for the Mask, with traces of Yakko Warner).
I'll have to come back here when I have some time for a proper post, but in the meantime:
DangerMouse
Count Duckula
Darkwing Duck
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Dogtanian

Teddy Ruxpin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMNZqRH2n7A&feature=related
it's a bear from earth that gets trapped in another world, there he meets a giant ant like native and a scientist who become teddy's best friends, together they journey across the wonderworld in search for the 7 emeralds that can open the gate to take teddy back home. however the evil empirer is trying to take the emeralds to rule the world and so sends his minions to steal the emeralds from teddy and his friends....... wow i just noticed how sonic-like the story is.
Transformers (the japanese original) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq0ZJgb-VX4&feature=related
trying to escape the evil decipticons, the autobots leave their planet and go to space .. they get sucked in a black hole and end up on earth, there they try to fix their spaceship, but to get it to fly again they need a lot of energyones.. so they use the help of danniel and sam the two humans first to discover them, to help them turn earth energy into energyones.... the decipticons also need it for the return home, so both robot clans try to get the energy first and stop the other's plans.
where in the world is carmen sandiego http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yCH0kGAn3w&feature=related
i don't remember if the video game came out first or the book or this cartoon... but carmen sandiego was a huge hit and one of my favorite cartoons as a kid... the story: an international theif named Carmen Sandiego is stealing valuable treasures around the world, and her over confiedance of never being caught she leaves cluse for the detectives to catch her. i remember saying "who do you think you are? Barbie and the Rockers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZVX21Iqngk&feature=related
yes the famous doll barbie had a cartoon show in the 80s, this was a huge fab in our time. basically it's a musical show where barbie and her band called "barbie and the rockers" are from the future, in a world peace attempt to play their music in the new space coloney, they get succed into a wormhole and come to earth in the present 80s, still with the same idea to lift people's spirits with music, they rock on!
Byonic Six http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoRFUBGTaTQ
an accident takes the lives of a family of 6, a kind professor revives the family by turning them into cyborgs. the bionic six each have a super power of their own. togather with the help of the professor who rescued them, they try to stop docotor scarb (who looks like eggman but uglier) from his evil plan to rule the world. it's a comedy adventure.. if you didn't see this show get off your behind and go find it. it's totally worth watching.
Dennis the menace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbCl77HZwE0
based on the popular comic.. it's the famous story of a trouble making kid who by some odd luck ends up saving the day.
Ren and Stimpy (Warning this video is gross) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orO-_n0NlmA&feature=related
my top favorite cartoon, i was so happy i can mention it, i went and watched a few episodes before coming back here to post it okay so the story is a differnt comedy sketch each episode but the idea is an evil selfish skinny dog called Ren abuses and pushes around a stupid cat Stimpy that lives with him... the cartoon is all about the two characters getting horrifically hurt and meeting odd people in odd situations. to put it more simply it's a retarded crazy dramatic comedy
okay thats all for now... please you add dudes, there's tons of stuff i'm sure you can remember.
I'm liking the inclusion of Swat Kats and Ninja Turtles from DB.
Here's a few choices of mine:
K-ON! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AhJoZvPJkI
A group of girls that are part of a light music club in school, that do random and funny things. Most of the story consisted of the girls prepping for the school festival. Not too great of a story, but I really enjoyed watching it. Awesome opening theme too. Can't forget the stupid annoying teacher though.
X-Men http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxOQTaLTFrU
Not to be confused with the abomination of X-Men Evolution. The story revolves around a group of mutants with extraordinary powers, that try to fight mutant prejudice with peace. The antagonists consist of hostile groups of mutants and a government that fears their powers. The story consists of time traveling and alternate dimensions that make it a little difficult to keep up with sometimes, but this is definitely my favorite animated show of all time. It has a really great mixture of action and comedy.
Edit: not sure what happened but some of the font color got whacked out
Barbie and Rockers? Never heard of em. Gem and the Holograms on the other hand...
SO I HERD U LIEK NINJA TURTLES, DB
Did I mention that I'm named after one?
Like, seriously, my brother was like "I wanna name him Rafael." and my parents were like "Sure why not."
...Even though "Raphael" is spelled with a "ph" instead of an "f" but whatev.
OK, I said I'd be back and here I am.
DangerMouse
I'm not linking to video, because this is definitely not public domain (check out the full DVD release in the US & the UK), but I'll link to Cosgrove Hall's official website: http://www.chf.co.uk/shows/past/dangermouse/
DM is the world's greatest secret agent, despite being "assisted" by the world's most incompetent sidekick (the narrator's words, not mine ). His base of operations is a replica pillar box (post box to you young'uns) on a corner of Baker Street (described as Mayfair, but technically I believe Bloomsbury, fact fans). His arch nemesis is the villainous Baron Greenback, abetted by Stiletto Mafiosi (a surname which I think was quietly dropped in the US and you poor souls also got a mockney accent for him, whereas the UK was treated to a very bad Italian accent). Like all the great villains, he has a white furry pet to stroke while plotting evil - in his case, a caterpillar named Nero.
The Cosgrove Hall writers must have been sniffing the paint, because some of the adventures are particularly surreal. They must also have been fans of Monty Python and they amused themselves by putting in references to amuse the parents who would doubtless have to watch the show as well as the sprogs.
They topped off this masterpiece by getting some rather good actors on for the voices - David Jason, Terry Scott & Edward Kelsey were already well known (or at least in Edward Kelsey's case, I saw an episode of either the Persuaders or the Champions or Randall & Hopkirk with him in).
The show ran for 10 years, although I must admit I don't recall seeing new episodes of DM after Count Duckula aired. I think the secret to the appeal was basically the voice actors, the crazy plots & the dialogue - and the fact that it didn't talk down to children. Words such as "schizophrenic", "labyrinthine" and "monocular" were used and there was one episode that featured a conversation on the difference between and derivation of "acrobatics" and "aquabatics". Even the Narrator gets in on the fun and is a character in his own right.
I'm halfway through the 12 disc boxset at the moment and it makes me laugh as much (if not more) than it did when DM first started in the eighties. You could write a book of all the puns and plays on words they put in the episodes - and if Cosgrove Hall ever did, I'd be first in the queue to buy it!
Count Duckula
Another Cosgrove Hall production, official page to be found at http://www.chf.co.uk/shows/past/countduckula/
This was technically a spin off from DangerMouse, although this particular reincarnation (last in a long line of vampire barons) bore little resemblance to the Transylvanian terror that appeared in episodes of DangerMouse. This particular vampire duck was a vegetarian, to the everlasting despair of his butler. His favourite meal was a broccoli sandwich - something the famous "wampire" hunter, Doctor Von Goosewing, never quite grasped.
The Count's base of operations was a tumbledown old Castle in the Transylvanian Alps, which had the added trick (besides a distressing tendency to lose bits from its walls in high winds) of being able to transport itself anywhere in the world at the behest of its master - albeit it always had to return at dawn, Eastern Transylvanian Standard Time. This allowed the week's plot to unfurl pretty much anywhere in the world.
Again, one of David Jason's finest performances, joined again by Brian "Stiletto" Trueman and Jack May (already known to thousands in the UK as some guy in the Archers - can't tell you who, because I didn't listen to that radio show).
The programme was apparently at least part-funded by Nickelodeon and it definitely had a more transatlantic feel; however that didn't stop it gently ribbing Americans as well as British and anyone else it felt like. The plots were not as surreal as DM's could be, but there was plenty of snappy dialogue and puns.
Darkwing Duck
For image, see my avatar Daring duck of mystery, and champion of right - with an "ego the size of a planet" which could easily rival SatAM era Sonic. Darkwing Duck was Disney's answer to Batman (with homages probably to the Shadow and various superheroes throughout the ages), albeit in a more comedy fashion. Darkwing protects the city of St Canard from the predations of various supervillains, supernatural entities and criminal scum. The citizens to be honest don't quite know what to make of him and the police reckon he's another nutter and probably a criminal. His base is high in the tower of the Audubon Bay Bridge, although he has a suburban home for his alter ego, Drake Mallard. Drake's life is further complicated by the presence of his adopted daughter, a "spirited" kid who must make his home insurance premiums the highest mankind has ever seen ("This punishment will have to be pretty good - I used all my best stuff when she blew up the bathroom!").
Like many superheroes, he needs a good sidekick, a role filled ably by Launchpad "LP" McQuack, thus making this a spin-off from DuckTales. There has never, however, been a real cross-over episode, just references. LP has been back to Duckberg a time or two and every so often Gizmoduck turns up to thwart villainy in St Canard, much to Darkwing's disgust.
His on-off love interest is a witch (and part-time criminal) named Morgana and from time to time he works for SHUSH, a government agency with a director who sounds awfully like Man from UNCLE's Mr Waverley. While working for SHUSH, he is up against FOWL, the Fiendish Organisation for World Larceny (also to be seen in DuckTales).
I think Darkwing's charm is in its snappy dialogue and its crazy supervillains. The hero, despite needing to be taken down a peg or too from time to time, is actually very good at what he does when he's not busy posturing and playing to the media. His relationship with his daughter is also a strong theme and played quite well.
Mysterious Cities of Gold
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Cities_of_Gold
An anime from the early eighties, although I think it may have been a co-production with France - it was certainly very popular there and those lucky souls got soundtrack releases. The rest of us have to watch eBay with an eagle eye to pick up "re-orchestrated" CDs, since Saban managed to lose the master tapes.
It is set in the 16th century when Europe is conquering the New World. Esteban, an orphan from Barcelona and apparently "The Child of the Sun", falls in with a guy of refreshingly ambiguous morality - you spend most of the time thinking he's a bad guy and then he does something which completely changes your perception of him. Esteban ends up on a Spanish ship sailing for South America, together with a kidnapped Inca girl named Zia, in search of the fabled City of Gold.
They have adventures while journeying through the lands of the Inca, the Aztecs & the Olmecs, finding amazing artefacts and trying to avoid the attentions of Pizarro's Spanish army.
This was something of cult viewing in the UK - I certainly recall that everything stopped before teatime in order to watch the week's episode on Children's BBC. However, I don't know that we ever saw the final episode - maybe a fellow Brit can let me know? I was 6 at the time, so it's a little hazy!
I am a bad person, in that I got the UK boxset for Christmas last year and I still haven't opened it. My only defence is that I bought and watched the French boxset the year before.
Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogtanian
This was originally a Spanish-language cartoon, produced by BRB Internacional in Madrid, sometime around 1980, although it took a few years to make it to the UK. BRB would go on to make Sandokan and 80 Days Around the World with Willy Fog. As a side note, the PR department in BRB are very nice and took the time to answer my e-mail when I was living in Madrid and wondering when the DVDs were coming out.
It is an adaptation of Dumas' Three Musketeers, although towards the end of the series it sought other inspiration, including influences from the Scarlet Pimpernel. Athos, Porthos & Aramis are unchanged, but D'Artagnan has become Dogtanian (an inspired pun which isn't actually there in the original, named Dartacan). For some reason, Porthos is the leader, while Athos has great strength. All the main characters are dogs, although there are also pigs and Milady de Winter is a cat. Athos is a St Bernard, Porthos is a German Shepherd and Aramis is something akin to a King Charles Cavalier spaniel. Dogtanian himself has been described (on the official DVD release, no less) as something like the lovechild of Snoopy and Lady from Lady & the Tramp.
As you would expect in a children's show, Dogtanian does not have the philandering ways of the original D'Artagnan. Instead, his love is faithful to Juliet, unmarried lady-in-waiting to the Queen. The Duke of Buckingham is not overtly the Queen's lover (unlike in the later Albert the 5th Musketeer, where it was pretty obvious from him hiding under the Queen's bed!).
The main bones of the story are still there, however, particularly Cardinal Richelieu, Rochefort, Milady and Monsieur de Treville, the stealing of the Queen's diamonds etc. And the themetune was great in whatever language

Teddy Ruxpin http://www.youtube.com/wa...2n7A&feature=related
it's a bear from earth that gets trapped in another world, there he meets a giant ant like native and a scientist who become teddy's best friends, together they journey across the wonderworld in search for the 7 emeralds that can open the gate to take teddy back home. however the evil empirer is trying to take the emeralds to rule the world and so sends his minions to steal the emeralds from teddy and his friends....... wow i just noticed how sonic-like the story is.
Wow, no offense, but you are WAY off.
Teddy Ruxpin is about a young illiop (bear-like species), who's best friends with an octopede (eight-legged caterpillar-esque creature) named Grubby. They leave their homeland of Rillonia, and travel to the land of Grundo where they meet Newton Gimmick. Together, they search for a treasure using a map that Teddy and Grubby found at Teddy's home. Along the way, they meet up with Prince Arin who informs them that his sister, Princess Aruzia has been kidnapped. They take time off from their treasure hunt to rescue her. While rescuing the princess, they find six crystals that are revealed to have special powers later on.
The trio have various adventures together and the primary bad guy is Quellor, Supreme Oppressor of MAVO (Monsters and Villians Organization). Quellor has a special black box that can completely wipe anyone's memory. MAVO's goal is to get the crystals. At one point, MAVO gets all six crystals and spreads darkness and evil across the land. Everyone becomes mean and nasty, including Grubby and Gimmick. Teddy alone saves the day and reclaims the crystals.
So where does Tweeg come into it? I'm sure I recall him being a bad guy for a while. And what was the name of his stooge, the thing that looked like a Boglin?
Of course, I could just go look that up... *does so*
EDIT: Answer: Tweeg is in it and is a bad guy, albeit incompetent. The Boglin thing was called LB.
DW
I don't think the G1 Transformers cartoon was originally Japanese or am I just completely off my rocker here? Well I know the toy and concept originated there...
But oh well. I want to show case some bad cartoons to counter balance all our nostalgic gushing. This is actually a movie, not a cartoon but it's animated so...yeah!
Titanic the Animated Movie. Oh geezuz this is just an awful movie. I first heard about it via TVTropes but the Nostalgia Critic really hit home how bad this is. Bad animation, ridiculous story. I mean come on the director is trying to make a Child's film about the TITANIC. Probably the scariest part of this film is the Rapping Dog. It really sums up how bizzare and wrong this whole thing is. It's like if someone tried to make an animated children
cartoon version of The Holocaust or something. They'd probably get random singing animals in there too somehow. Even more insulting is when the boat sinks all the animal characters survive.

Yep. The only thing Tweeg is good at is being incompetent. Of course, considering how his mother is, it's not hard to see why he's not exactly the brightest crayon in the box.
Wow, no offense, but you are WAY off.

i was really young back then, so i confused it with sonic on my own... i truely am a sonic fan.
thanks SRD, totally appreciate the correction.
If you're interested, Mill Creek Entertainment's released the entire TR series on DVD.
Dude I am Weasel and Cow and Chicken were great.
I think my tolerance for gross humor (or animation) has gone down over the years...
I used to be able to watch Cow and chicken like, all the time, then one day I saw it on Cartoon Network and I was all like ":O HOW DID I WATCH THIS" I was alright with "I am weasel", though.
Not that I don't like Gross Humour period... I geuss just in small doses... and even then only certain things.
I thought Cow and Chicken was pretty mild in grossness compared to Ren and Stimpy

Two points of contention: 1) the video game was first and 2) the game show was way better than the cartoon. Did the cartoon have a theme song that you could get people in their mid to late 20s to sing merely by saying "Do it Rockapella"? I think not!
I'm also shocked and dismayed by the lack of Batman in this thread.
Welp if you're the number one Batman fan, get ta writing!
What's to explain about why Batman is awesome? Is it the amazing opening which tells a story and sets up the character and concept without a single line of dialog? Is it the amazing artwork? Is it the phenomenal voice acting? Is it the iconic soundtrack? Is it the fact that unlike most cartoon that preceded it and followed it, it tended to treat its audience with a greater respect without talking down to them? Or perhaps it's all of the above.
For those out there who have never seen the show or heard of the character (one question: you exist?), here's the rundown. At a young age, Bruce Wayne watched helplessly as his parents get murdered during a mugging. As he grows, so does his determination that no one else go through that feeling of helplessness in the face of evil, so he uses his family's vast wealth to train himself both mind and body into a detective/vigilante. But as he fights crime in Gotham City, he encounters many criminals who go beyond the standard mugger, thief and thug into something much more terrible and sinister, a seeming microcosm of all of humanity's terrible natures. Can he hope to win what seems to be a losing battle against human depravity itself, or does he risk going as crazy as the criminals he hunts (something which, depending on who you ask, already happened long ago)?
Seriously, Batman: TAS and its offspring (Batman Beyond, Justice League, etc) are the gold standard of superhero cartoons.

well i'm glad someone actually remembers it, well it's my opinion really, it had a strong sticky memory in my head. the show wasn't that bad, i was really young back then and that was like detective conan to me back then..... how old are you anyway?
super mario brothers cartoon (the first one) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w2fi_f5OLY
this is the old 80s cartoon where in the beginning and end of the show you see live actors playing mario and luigi start talking to kids i think they were giving safety lessons, anyway i was a kid and i loved this show. i played mario like crazy after i started watching it.... the story is a comedy about 2 plumpers going into another world where they fight king kopa and his turtle armies to save the princess from his evil grasp.
Spiral zone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCpMl8UK1SY
the opening theme song who can forget it, everyone loves this opening... anyway the story is dramatic, it's about a zombie disease effecting areas on earth called the spiral zones, the people who go into that zone turn into zombies.. the heroes story is they try rescue people from the spiral zone and find the cure to save the human race while fighting the evil zombie army that tries to foil their plans.
Exosquad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okOekzgV5vk
the best show of it's time, the music is legendary and the story just perfect.. still trying to get the DVD for this one....
it's in far furture when humans built robotic exoframes to help fight wars with space pirates and use in engineering soon after, humans created organic intellegent beings called the neosapiens solely created as slaves to build for and serve humans... those blue neo humans decided it was unfair and started a war to enslave humans instead, so the humans fight for their survival against their own creation.... if you havent seen this yet, i strongly suggest you do. it's enjoyable but not fit for children since it is dramatic and lots of people die in this show nearly on every episode.
Dragon Quest http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oXKAYRx9uI based on the dragon warrior 7 rpg game.
the boy fly (dai) who was raised on an island by monsters, was living peacefully till the beauitful princess came over searching for a powerful teacher.. became friends with him then was kidnapped by an evil monster who took the princess to the main land after turning all the monsters that raised Fly into evil monsters, where fly had to kill them... being angered he seeks to destroy the sphere of evil Vurn which causes pain and suffering to all the people of his world. together with his comrades he aims to rescue the princess and other suffering towns from the evil generels of the evil sphere..... he also seeks to lock the seceret of his dragon mark that gives him enbelievable strength when in danger...the anime has dramatic moments but mostly it's fun comedy. better than the video game in my opinion.
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e5q6ubDlZE This was a cool show. Of all the Disney animated television shows I think I watched this one the most. With Bonkers being the second. It follows along the trend of Disney recycling old characters into a new environment like Tail Spin (another cool show) In this Chip and Dale are two detectives who like....solve crimes and stuff. They are one of the prime examples of Heterosexual Life Partners you'll ever see in a cartoon. You've got Monty the cheese obsessed big guy. I always thought he needed to see someone for that. Zipper the fly...not much you can elaborate on there, basically the "team pet" And of course Gadget. The "hottest mouse ever" ? Well that's what people on chan boards tell me.
Bonkers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbqFGapihP0 I really liked this show because it followed the formula of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", the idea of cartoons and real life co existing on the same plane of reality yet separated so neither side fully understands the other. Just use your imagination. A human police officer gets a cartoon character for a partner. The cartoon is a washed up toon super star who can only find employment as a police officer and really has no idea how to work with humans. The human cop is a frustrated overweight guy who can't get ahead and has a really short temper. Hilarity ensues. The last season I didn't like because it looks like the animation budget got knocked down a few notches. Sort of like the last season of Gargoyles.
But its a really cool show. I know you can find some episodes on youtube but I doubt you can find them all. I love the buddy cop aspect between Bonkers and Lucky. They're so different yet they somehow manage to pull it off. Mostly in some insane slapstick manner. And it's interesting how Lucky the human tries to understand and adapt to cartoon logic and physics. I also like that...rabbit who kept falling apart. What was his problem. Bonkers ran with a total of 4 seasons, 64 episodes.
Random : Carmen Sandiego acapella Carmen Sandiego w00t
Good choices there - Chip 'n' Dale & Bonkers were high on my list, too. Dale's personal brand of nuttiness made him my favourite, plus the number of times he could drive Chip (who was too serious for his own good) to distraction was great
Bonkers was even nuttier, which probably also explains why I liked him. The show appeared to be Disney's attempt to go anvil humour a la Warner Brothers.
Disney released all but the last 14 episodes of Rescue Rangers on DVD. Do not ask me why they stopped there. There is no release for Bonkers at all, so Youtube was necessary for me to watch the pilot (which I'd never seen) and the one with Old Father Time (which I hadn't seen in an awfully long time). I still need to find the one with Mickey Mouse...
DW
thanks for the additions DB your cool dude, but can i ask? didn't bonkers have a female human partner?
some horro cartoons:
Tales From the Crypt http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZmEJFS5bBc
a holloween special cartoon. it had a lot of good ideas but was child friendly in ways... for a kid it was scary the good way i can't get over it, it really was an interesting fun show.
the idea is in the beginning of the show the skeleton green guy would read a story about some kid encountring monsters or ghosts and how they learn a lesson at the end. i remember clearly the werewolf episode, it was about a kid getting bullied and when turned into a werewolf he bite the bully and transformed him into the werewolf, so when the police arrived they caught the bully who was the wrong werewolf kid.
Ghost Hunt (warning spoiler episode 3 video... also totally freakingly scary) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVVoN-QMYH0&feature=fvsr
this is the only ONLY cartoon that ever frightened me in my adult age. it took me two days to get over it. watching the full series in one day alone is a bad idea for this anime. i think episode 6 was the scariest of all... .anyway if your curious about it, it's the story of ghost hungers an extrodinary highly intellegent boy and his assistant checking the school's old building for ghosts, when they meet up with May a girl with high senses (don't worry she doesn't have super powers she's very average in the story).. anyway she joins the team and they begin taking ghost hunting cases to exrocise the ghosts.... what i enjoyed about this show is it takes a more relaistic feel than most anime ideas.
Bonkers had a female partner after Lucky Piquel, named Miranda Wright (yes Disney, very funny). I say after, but the production order and the transmission order were completely different.
The pilot was definitely trying for the Roger Rabbit vibe - I think the show's original concept was that it would be Roger Rabbit, but that was a legal minefield and they couldn't get the rights. I believe they're Amblin Entertainment's, not Touchstone Pictures'.

Will edit to write summaries as soon as I find my glasses... I hate astigmatism. Funny thing is we sat on the floor of our hostel in Cairns, AU going through childhood cartoons and movies.
Some already mentioned a few of my favorites: Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
Others:
Sonic SatAm but then again this one is obvious
Sailor Moon
TalesSpin
Gummi Bears
Pound Puppies
Super Mario Brothers Super Show (have the box sets since we bought them for my sister)
Jimmy Neutron
Hey Arnold!
Don't know if they count but all the Barbie movies (haha yes I am a girl but in my defense most of them have a Ballet piece)
For some reason, I don't like the newer cartoons as much as the old ones. With the exception of Avatar The Last Airbender, not many have caught my eyes. Anime is a whole different story since I still watch that
hidoikijio it's okay if you want to post cartoon movies, it goes okay with the title of the thread.
Star ocean EX http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7EMqgcsCIE
based on the success game star ocean the second story, the main hero claud comes to an aline planet with his father (the captain of the spaceship) and some crew members exploring a cave he gets sucked into a portal and ends up in an inhabited alien world where he meets a girl named Rena and saves her from monsters with his plazma gun. she sees him as the legendary hero mentioned in her world to come from another world, anyway they journey throught the world trying to solve the monster problems and finding claud a way to get home... its a romance comedy adventure. it kept true to the game, a successful anime indeed.
Utawarerumono http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlRXEsTS9Ac
the long name means "masked stranger", the story is set in a historical old japan/ animal people world.. it's a cute anime in appearance, but it's kinda political and has a lot of gore and people die horribly in the story, but most of it is pleasingly cheerful. so the story is about a man who was saved in the forest by a wolf girl (everyone is an animal person in the story) the hero doesn't remember his name or past or why he has a mask on his face, when the evil empirer starts attacking the village the hero takes charge of the people and guide them to battle, and the story is all about him being the war leader and encountring different enemies and gathering generals. this anime is worth watching, if you like complicated stories.
there's romance and drama but mostly comedy.
Movie:
Huntchback of nortedame http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRO-M4XyAbM
the story is famous for the huntchback being locked in the tower and falling in love with the pretty dancer.... but i rather see the true story is all about frollo (that's why the link is his song) it's all about this wicked evil cold hearted villian who uses god as an excuse to hate and murder the gipsies, when he kills Quasie's mother, he tries to lift the guilt with letting quasie live in the tower instead of tossing him in the well (thanks to the archphishop's intruding) anyway then he lusts for esmiralda the poor dancer girl and tries to find her buy harming other gipsy families.
i thought this story was too adult for disney, but i loved it nonetheless.
Lessee. For now, I'll list the anime I've enjoyed.
I'll also indicate which version (dub/sub) I watched.
IN THA PAST:
Digimon (dub): I have a lot of strong memories of this series. I remember watching at least to the end of the "Next Generation" series. I loved the characters and the humor and the villains, and.... *sigh* If I were to point to one show from my childhood that I derive the most nostalgia from, it'd be Digimon.
Pokemon (dub): My first exposure to it was the later (at the time) seasons and I found it to be a guilty pleasure at least. It was fun to see the Pokemon and locations from Gold and Silver in there (I didn't know Remoraid evolved to Octillary before an episode that showcased it happening, so, there you go. It's a legitimate game aid as well). I caught a rerun of the first few episodes once, though, and I remember really enjoying those.
Yu!Gi!Oh! (dub): This show gets riffed on a lot but, 4Kids treatment aside, I really liked this series. I remember an interview from LittleKuriboh where he said he parodies it because, despite how seriously it takes itself, to the point that you can' help by have a laugh at it once in a while, he found himself actually enjoying it and caring about the plot and the characters. And I did, too.
RECENTLY:
Neon Genesis Evangelion (sub): Overrated, overanalyzed, overly depressing; these words and more are often thrown at this series. And why not? They're all a sign of how immensely popular it is and how much people really care about it. I watched the whole thing a few months back and I really liked it, the character of Shinji in particular. I felt like I could really emphasize with his feelings and didn't once feel like he was being overly "emo" or whiney - in fact, his keeping his feelings to himself is more dramatic and tragic than that could ever be. And, trippy as it was, I found myself congratulating him along with everyone else at his epiphany in the ending. Which is why EoE ticked me off so bad. Catatonic little wanker.... >=
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (sub): I find myself drawn to these character driven series' a lot, it seems. I don't want to spend a lot of time with this series, but just know that I love it to death. Super Driver is my favorite song from it because of the strong "nakama" feelings it has with the brigade during that opening. Feel free to kill me if you want, but E8 was downright bearable if you knew what you were going into and just slammed it down all in one shot. It's easier to notice to fun little differences in every iteration that way. Vanishment FTW!
One Piece (sub): Three words: THIS IS AWESOME! I actually haven't seem much of this anime but from what I've heard, it is very faithful to what I am familiar with: the manga. And damn is this show awesome. It's just...wow. Everything about this show is just... amazing. It's absolutely hilarious, the action is incredible, and the dramatic parts never fail to draw a few manly, Franky-esque tears from me. (ME-HEH-HEH-ERRY! *bawls uncontrolably*)
Death Note (sub): This series is a lot of fun. It's also very flawed, and never quite recaptures how captivated I was for the first dozen episodes or so (no, the "Just as Planned" bit could not save how bored-to-tears I was by Corporate!Kira). Despite that, it's good. Check it out.
Code Geass (sub): This was my Gateway Series, for all you tropers out there (I'll spare you and not link to it), which means it was the first anime of my late-teen anime-obsessed years, which lead me to all the others. This is another excelently executed series, with great characters, pacing, plot, voice work, animation, art design, twists, turns, bells, whistles, all that jazz. Robots. Mind control. Sweet table-lovin'. Great stuff.
Other notable series I'm too lazy to elaborate on:
Lucky Star (sub): Screw you guys, I can listen to a ten minute conversation about desserts and enjoy it. Especially if it's hilarious.
Azumanga Daioh! (sub): KAH. WAH. EEE. *cries like a baby at the ending*
Cowboy Bebop (DUB HELL YEAH): *exhales from invisible cigarate* ...Cool.
Trigun (sub and dub): DEEP SPACE GUNSLINGER ACTION WITH A DARK CENTER. ...That could be a badass candy bar.
Elfen Lied (dub): Another show I read the manga of first. The adaptation is pretty good, and I appriciated the tiny bit more taste injected into the material at times. (The gazebo kiss, anyone?)
Hellsing(TV) (DUB YES): I may be one of the few who enjoyed this moderately more than the OVA's. The tone is just better; more somber, less over the top.
And that's just anime. I may post more on my american preferences and movie preferences later.
Old Best cartoons...EVERYTHING FROM THE 90's! (even the sub-par stuff)

Man...seeing how crappy US/Canadian Toons are now in comparison..it makes me sad...its just not right.

i was waiting so long to see Neon genesis evangelion, just seeing the adds and review pictures on gamers republic (my favorite game magazine back then) made me drool over it.. it was my most desired anime to watch for years......
but when i finally did watch it ... MY DREAMS WERE CRUSHED
it sucks so bad, it should've came with a warning, cool graphics amazing character and robot designs what could possible be wrong with it? the whole story and events.
it had more crap than i could normally live with. i'm used to anime being a little hard to swollow sometimes but this story was so overboard i was afraid to watch anime for awhile.
i know a friend who watches anime just for the art, and she couldn't bare watching this.
<Elfen Lied (dub): Another show I read the manga of first. The adaptation is pretty good, and I appriciated the tiny bit more taste injected into the material at times. (The gazebo kiss, anyone?) >
that is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to adult of a show. also it's creepy and too bloody. but i did read it had a good story i won't watch it though.
Yeah, the conspiracy plot and the attempted allegorical parts were kind of nonsensical, which is why I took more from Evangelion from the characters.
Me and a friend listened to the Lucky Star Dub not expecting to get past the first episode. But somehow we watched every episode in about a week. Thank God the dub is good. I don't like subtitles.
Most Anime dubs are at least average....I think alot of Anime fans In the US just diss dubs because there abunch of wannbee otaku's.
I mean Ive seen about 150 dubbed anime (movies & series combined) and most of them were at least Average and some were pretty darn good! there was one every now & then that truly did suck...but I think most dubs are actually alot better then the whiners say they are.
I think the only Truly Horrible dubs ive seen were Ikki Tousin(wich i only watched 6 eps of.) & alot of the 4kids stuff.
Most Anime dubs are at least average....I think alot of Anime fans In the US just diss dubs because there abunch of wannbee otaku's.
The term is "weeaboo".
I generally won't watch a dub unless it's renowned for its quality, like Bebop or Hellsing. I like subs. I like being able to hear the original performances of the original actors, and there's a special kind of world-unifying feeling that you get when you can listen to people talking in a language from across the world and be able to recognize the same human intonations and emotions as we possess here in Eagleland. A few years ago you couldn't get me to touch one either, but they have really grown on me, and I prefer them. Plus, some shows just work better in Japanese, case in point: Azumanga Daioh. A group of english-speaking schoolgirls attempting (poorly) to insult each other in french? Amusing. A group of japanese-speaking schoolgirls attempting (equally poorly) to insult each other in english? Freaking hilarious. "You...You are-uh.....FOORU!"
Pera peeera!
<I like subs. i watch more subs than dubs for the same reasons. they made it and worked hard on it, it's only fair to see the original work.
i mean how would hollywood actors feel if all their movies were dubbed in other countries?
meh...to each his own..I prefere to watch a show in my native tounge. My view on this is simple..you READ BOOKS & COMICS.....YOU WATCH TV! I should not have to read a show. Therefore it makes more since to watche anime dubbed.
I can understand why some people see it as better or a more "Unique experience" but its the animtion thats meant to move you..not the voices...I mean it is called the art of Animation, not the art of people talking whil pretty pictures move...LULZ.
But yea, I prefere Dubs, so unless the series is unavalible in the U.S. (Like Dr.Slump or the 1st season of Rosario+Vampire.) I watch it in English..the language i speak.
And sonicfan..you do know there are countries that dub english movies into there native languages..I mean Japan Dubs our animted films in japanese just like we dub theres in Engish, french, spanish..etc.
I think it's a bit dismissive to assume the animation is the most important part of an animated feature. The quality of the voice performance can single-handedly decide whether the show is dismissed as better off for kiddies who don't know better, or if the performance is real enough to maintain the illusion for an adult. (Though I'm pretty sure you weren't being all that serious when you said that, LULZ, and all. ^_^; )
Yeah, our movies do get dubbed into other languages in other countries. But think; if a french person or a spanish person were to listen to the voice of, I dunno, say, Heath Ledger's Joker, only in their native tongue, wouldn't you feel like they're missing out on something?
I realize I'm probably being a bit hypocritical though, as I'm sure a lot of effort is often put into an animes localization. I just kind of notice a trend that Japan cares more. Even in something with a dub as fantastic as "Spirited Away", there are some voices that put me off, like John Ratzenburger (he's great, but he's too familiar), or the occasionally over-the-top Disney Channel guy that did Haku.
...Batman's voice would probably be fine in any language, though, it's not that hard to whisper as loud as possible. *rimshot*

Um.....aren't they? And they probably wouldn't care. Arg how the crap did this topic jump rail onto subs vs. dubs. *reads up* Oh...it was my fault.
I prefer dubs to subs personally, especially when it comes to female characters. The majority of female Japanese VAs are far too high pitched for me.
Also because I dislike having to read while I'm trying to watch an anime.
In the arguement of dubs and subs, the whole thing boils down to character interpretation and actor range. Also Japanese Voice Actors seldom ever switch for characters, so you do not have a Tales of Symphonia 2 situation with only 20% of the all-star awesome VA squad returning for the sequel.
That kind of backfires sometimes and proves the first point, though. In Dragonball/Z/GT the same voice actor plays Goku throughout the saga in the Japanese original.--- his vocal acting range does not allow him to sound any older than 8 years old even when the character is 70 years old at the very end.
Whereas the Ocean and Funi dubs both cast a guy who sounds as hardcore as Goku looks, while being able to make him sound silly when he is being a dufus.
Another thing about dubs that I've noticed is that a lot of actors attempt to imitate their Japanese counterparts, which is a backfire in 9/10ths of the times I've seen it attempted. Haruhi's dub has two talented voice actresses for Mikuru and Yuki respectively, but both of them seem to be trying out the Japanese VA's style more than their own attempt. In Mikuru's case this is unforgivably bad as no woman in any English speaking part of the world sounds like that, ever. Yuki comes off really well in my opinion, though I've heard that she just sounds to be imitating the other actress more than attempting to play an emotionless(?) android alien girl.
The time this rule is reversed however is Light Yagami from Death Note. The guy matched the final episode's OHSNAP laugh so perfectly that I've seen a YouTube video attempting to analyse the pitch of both laughs and see how accurately the US VA reenacted it.
Incidentally the shows I cannot watch dubbed are:
Gundam SEED, Sailor Moon, Azumanga, Lucky Star
The shows I cannot watch subbed:
Trigun, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, Slayers, DBZ.
and the rest I'm impartial.
kayla you said anime girls in japanese have high pitch voices that are bad so hearing a dubbed english version is better........ well let's test that:
here's an example of an anime getting ruined by the dubbing: DUB
SUB
and like craig stated, when english dub actors try to mimic the japanese voice actors they get it all wrong in most cases... like the example of Exile sage.
the real truth is, you might prefer hearing an anime in English so not to read the subtitles, but the original japanese is always better.
<And sonicfan..you do know there are countries that dub english movies into there native languages>
there's actually an agreement, not all movies can be dubbed. also not all anime can be dubbed either
<In Mikuru's case this is unforgivably bad as no woman in any English speaking part of the world sounds like that, ever>
you think that's bad god forbid the japanese ever dubbing in english on their own ever again, just watch this BadDub
That clip only proves my point.
No one should have a voice that high, and it's very nearly painful to listen to. Not all female characters need to have such high-pitched voices. Mermaid Melody is a great example of anime that has VAs speaking in normal pitches and is far easier on the ears than others.
the real truth is, you might prefer hearing an anime in English so not to read the subtitles, but the original japanese is always better.
Matter of preference. I point you to Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, and Samurai Pizza Cats as dubs that are considered to be better than their Japanese versions.
I'll only watch subs if the dubs are not available.
I'll pick Vic Mignogna and Crispin Freeman any day of the week.
Besides, it's not like America is the only country guilty of ruining shows. Look at what Japan did to Beast Wars.
Ugh and we all know what Japan did to the Turtles. But people tend to laugh at that so it isn't so bad. Speaking of. I've been trying to find the Japanese dub of the 2k3 show. So far I've only found the Intro and Outro and these things. I've yet to find a full episode anywhere.
But anyway I agree. When you get down to it its 100 percent preference. As long as there is an option there.
I'll pick Vic Mignogna and Crispin Freeman any day of the week.
Crispin's Alucard is godly, but I'll take Japanese Kyon over his Kyon every time.
Good dubs? Full Metal Panic, One Piece (Funimation), Fullmetal Alchemist, Excel Saga
Superior dubs? Hellsing (all versions), Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Shin-Chan and Sgt. Frog.
Bleh except for one guy dubs? Gurren Lagann (Steve Blum is HILARIOUS as Leeron)

ew that IS terrible. it's such a shame too, the art looked great but then they went all super transformy and then four become one robot thing....... my head hurts just seeing it.
just like the powerpuff girls, although the PPG looks better just watch this
looks nice right? well there's these robots they call on and complicated storyline...... maybe it doesn't rest well with me cause it's not the same as the real one. i like senseless cartoon fun. i dont want a deep story all the time, in my opinion PPGZ is a waste of my time. it's just like any other anime.
<No one should have a voice that high, and it's very nearly painful to listen to. Not all female characters need to have such high-pitched voices>
i don't know sounds cute, it gets annoying if you see it in more than one anime (like the depressing silent characters like shadow) i hate repeated designs so i get you.
but still sometimes it's just right.
<Good dubs? Full Metal Panic, One Piece (Funimation), Fullmetal Alchemist, Excel Saga >
i just made a dub sub comparison for excile saga, it sucked. the main girl was more annoying in english.

Which is wildly appropriate, because Excel Excel is a very annoying character to begin with.
oddly enough my older brother likes the show in english and watched it... and he's mid 30s what's with that?!!
yeah she sucks, i dont expect much from the crazy anime comedy types.
