[link=animeonline.com/index.php?page=news_featured&ent_id=101235]And Funi got them![/link]
Funi's been doing a good job with their anime lately, so this should be good. They can't mess it up worse than 4Kids did.
That's true...but a few things were bothering me when I read that.
Like no cigarettes, but pipes and cigars are okay?
Quote:
So what else will FUNimations TV version not be doing?
COOK: What I can say for sure is that there will be no smoking in One Piece-land, as according to Cartoon Network, consumption of alcohol will be missing from the show, and obviously, a lot of the violence and gore will be missing.I know as soon as I say, No smoking, everyones mind immediately goes to Sanji and his sucker, and we will be continuing that. The whole reason the sucker is there is that its just too much work to repaint everything in the shot to remove the cigarette. You have to consider, for every one second of footage thats aired, there are 30 individual frames that need to be painted. So, for a three-minute scene of Sanji with a cigarette in his mouth, thats easily a week to two weeks of work, doing nothing else but that for eight hours a day.
Were much more concerned with finding a cast that fits the characters and brings the characters to life to whet the appetites of the fans so that they want to go check out the uncut DVD version of the show. And I think the change in voices and the script styling of the show will be enough to get the fans interested in the original series. We know were going to have to ask for forgiveness on the missing violence and the missing cigarettes, but theres nothing we can do about that besides not air it on TV at all.
And itll still be totally uncut on DVD.
COOK: Yes.So then what about the character of Smoker, who smokes two cigars at the same time? The previous version edited them out and renamed him Chaser.
COOK: Well, theres actually an exception with cigars and pipes. All we have to do is get rid of the smoke and the burning bit at the end. For whatever reason, [the FCC broadcast standards] are more concerned with getting rid of cigarettes. But cigars and pipes can be shown, provided theyre not lit or being used. But there are other shows like Naruto, which airs close to the same time as One Piece will, in which characters are seen with cigarettes with just the smoke removed, though not main characters like Sanji.
COOK: We have been asked not to do that, though we did ask if we could. Weve been asked that before. Why can the show before you or after you do this and you dont? Were just going with the orders weve been given. Were not sure why other shows can do certain things but its not okay for One Piece. In the Jaya saga, there is a pretty major character who smokes all the time on the island. Thats an instance of a character that smokes all the time, as well as having the cigarette in his mouth, where we have to decide if we can replace it with a toothpick or edit out the smoking altogether. Basically, its going to be a group effort to decide how to best handle it without steering away from the idea and the feel of One Piece.
No violence...does that mean no blood? But they have tons of blood on Naruto!
Though an uncut DVD, from professionals that are apperently fans...hmm
Edit:
Quote:
What about name changes? Zoro was changed to Zolo, possibly because of a legal issue with the Zorro character, but that Luffys brother Ace was changed to Trace, seemed arbitrary.
COOK: As far as Ace is concerned, I feel inclined to stick with Ace as the name. Every script that were writing goes through approval with Toei, and they have requested that we stay as close to the manga, as released by VIZ, as possible. They want us to keep character names, place names, item names as they are in the manga. Ultimately, what you read in the manga will be what you hear in the anime. I have no intention of changing names. Now the edited TV version may change some things to match up with what was done in the past, but the uncut version will most certainly have the original names.
Ace>Trace
its sad when the dub watchers that comment on youtube try to say "Oh one more thing you misspelled Trace's name get it right idiot lol" to the very one piece video you are watching. =(
However it seems the TV version will keep the dubbed names, despite that not wanting to, so the little ones won't get confused.
So...who really still watches the 4Kids dub that actually cares for One Piece?
If they still want to try the continuity from the 4Kids dub, they have a lot of red tape to work through. Its better to do it properly and actually -have- those kids confused. Then they will buy the uncut dvds.
Luffy: I miss Laboon...
Child: Um...who's Laboon?
Luffy: You know...Laboon! He's an important plot point! Way back when we entered the Grand Line! HU-hU-huh-HOH!!! =D
Child: =(
Child: I watched all the episodes on my TV I am the ultimate One Piece fan! Why don't I know this?
Announcer: What to know what really happened? By One Piece uncut today!
Quote:
Most importantly, will you use One Pieces original score?
COOK: We plan to. We feel that the original vision, the scope and soundscape of One Piece is wonderful. We will only try to polish the existing canvas, and add slight coloring with our new cast. What about the opening and closing music?
COOK: Its still under discussion, but I assure you we will not be using the Gum-Gum Rap.
Good, either it is going to be that original english "WE ARE" , some wierd insturmental into that's short compared the original so there can be more commercials, or the original OP openings. *hopes for number 3*
Wow, I might actually watch that.
Funi has One Piece?Sweet. Look like they going to the give the show the DBZ treatment(continue where the series left off and later on dub episode 1-144). Can't wait for the uncut DVDs.
This news is music to my ears. Maybe I can actually get into the series now.
Anything that's better then that 4Kids crap. So, are they restarting from the very beginning or continuing on from where 4Kids left?
Both. Restarting from begining for uncut DVDs, continuing for the TV version. Which I believe will only be a couple of notches above the 4Kids dub it sounds like, but its not their fault its the FCC and Cartoon Network. However the non TV uncut ones will be <3 <3 <3
I might pick up one or two of the DVDs, as the manga seems...
...Well, not utter sh*t, which for me is a high compliment for anime-related things.
They're starting off at Jaya, which means we MIGHT miss like maybe one or two filler episodes between Arabasta and Jaya. Though hopefully we'll be getting the uncuts in nice, inexpensive thinpaks, seeing as companies other than ADV are doin em now.
On top of all that, Funi needs to get back on track redubbing Slayers. I'm hoping they'll officially do the new movie/OVA that's being packaged with the series trilogy box set in Japan, instead of allowing ADV to get their filthy mitts on it. Cynthia's nice and all, but when it comes to dubbed Inverse my heart belongs to Ms. Ortiz.
Haha it doesn't matter if we miss a few filler episodes as all filler is undeniably crap anyway.
Oh god I hope they don't do Apiz, even for DVDs. :O
This is awesome news. One Piece is one of my favorite series, and I'm glad it's finally going to get the respect it deserves here.

Someone needs to watch the G-8 arc. All filler, all awesome.

I could have sworn that ADV bought the rights to the whole thing. Also, I'm 90% certain that the original Lina Inverse, Ms. Oritz, moved to 4Kids with Eric Stuart, who played the original Gourry and is currently...Kaiba.
Speakin of movies...
Hopefully this means we'll be getting the movies, too...finally.
Uh, no, not really. The G8 saga was certainly better then the rest of the fillers done, but it was still pretty rubbish anyway.

HULK HATE FILLERS! HULK SMASH!
ahem, now that that's out of the way i must say that i dislike fillers greatly. i wasn't a fan of the bleach ones and i wasn't a fan of the naruto ones. (i mostly boycotted them, rather then watched any of them)
i don't like one piece very much anymore though. it's gotten to the point in the manga where most fans are kind of feeling inuyasha syndrome (not enough main plot movement)or another example is when something really awesome happens they move on like it didn't happen and go to another island.
I have difficulty believing that. The Thriller Bark arc is amazing and definitely unique compared to what's gone on before. All of the new character designs are great, even if there's a bit too many new characters. Although the Nami scene was a bit irritating if only because she's being relegated to fanservice now.
Franky and Robin kicking arse was awesome though.
Jesus, 4Kids really handled that series badly, eh?
That got me reading this website that points out ALL and every one of 4Kids' feeble censorships; it's pretty clever.

I do. The 4Kids version is the only one I've seen so far so I didn't hear how bad it was from the original until I was already addicted to it. However, I am glad that we are going to get a less edited version, and that I'll finally see how it actually is supposed to be, though I think they should just start all over with the new dub but whatever.
As for those who's afraid the blood is still gonna be too edited, just look at Naruto. Sure some blood is left in tact, but there also are scenes where it is apparent there should be a great deal of blood. For instance, Spoilers (Select To Read): when Enma pulls Orochimaru's sword from the Third's back, there is no blood not even a cut where the sword was lodged into Sarutobi's back. So, more than likely there will be some blood taken out, but not nearly as much as the 4Kids version.
Sorry to resurrect such an old topic but I figured I'd go ahead a bring the news that the voice actors for the Straw Hats have been released, probably known but never told here, so here goes"
Luffy-Colleen Clinkenbeard (Riza Hawkeye and Rose from FMA, Rachel Moore from Case Closed, etc.)
Zolo/Zoro-Christopher Sabat (Lt. Louis Armstrong, Piccolo, Vegeta, etc.)
Nami-Luci Christian (Wrath from FMA, etc.)
Usopp-Sonny Strait (Maes Hughes, Krillin, Lupin, etc.)
Sanji-Eric Vale (Zolf J. Kimblee the Crimson Alchemist from FMA, Trunks, etc.)
Nico Robin-Stephanie Young (Mereille from Trinity Blood, etc.)
Chopper-Brina Palencia(Nina Tucker from FMA, etc.).
Christopher Sabat is in this?
That is so damn sexy, it hurts.

i'm not so sure about this one, but ok. anything is better than the old VA.
However, I am glad that we are going to get a less edited version
Less? It's an UNedited version we're getting rereleases of. *looks at the VA charts* Well, they hit ONE out of seven for what I was hoping for. Ah well, at least we'll be getting dual-language DVDs.

I was worried about the voices until after I watched [link=www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_SYsM2_s4Q]these[/link] two [link=www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZXleljtkYA]videos[/link] on YouTube. I think most of them would do fine doing the voices the only one I'm iffy on is Zolo; I was iffy on "Maes Hughes" voicing Usopp until I heard his Krillin voice and saw that that voice would be perfect for Usopp.

I was talking about the CN version being less edited not the DVD version. I may buy the DVDs later, but mostly I'll be watching it on Toonami.
Oh, I didn't recognize the name of Nami's new VA, but now I know, she's awesome. nN
EDIT:
*Listened to more*
KRILLIN AND THE DESERT PUNK? nN Oh yes!

She is actually very good. When I was in Otakon this year she and the voice for Chopper were present at the One Piece panel. They were nice enough to give us some lines for some upcoming episodes and both are actually very good and sound close to the Japanese voice. This is mainly due to the fact that Funimation has to get all their voice actors approved by the group in Japan before they can start recording, as they said at the time they believed their voice for Franky had been approved but they couldn't say who because it wasn't official as of yet. It was a pretty informative panel.
that's cool. i wonder who would play a good franky..
Okay, I see now. It doesn't look as bad now (I get lost on FMA VA lists as I never really paid much attention to the series). I honestly can't think of anyone who would be a good Franky, though. I just hope they don't play up Franky's "cyborg"ness too much and give him a mechanical voice. Maybe Brett Weaver? I can see him voicing someone over-the-top like Franky.
I think it'll be alright; these are some good actors who helped the US FMA dub gain recognition as one of the best dubs of all time.
I wonder if Nami will end up sounding like Miss Yukari; not sure that would fit.
Some new voices and other info.
Shanks-Christopher Bevins
Alvida-Laurie Steele
Buggy the Clown-Mike McFarland
Tashigi-Caitlin Glass
Ace/Trace-Travis Willingham (This is ironic as he also voices Roy Mustang the Flame Alchemist)
Smoker/Chaser-John Burgmeier
An Engish version of the 3rd opening of One Piece will be used and will be sung by Vic Mignogna, aka, Edward Elric.
So, since the uncut DVDs won't be released until sometime next year, anybody besides me going to watch the new translation on Toonami tomorrow night?
The new one's up tommorrow night? I probably will, just to see how they did.
Yeah, unless Wiki was wrong, but the Rainbow Mist Arc finished up last week and the Funimation dub is supposed to start right after the RMA. However, tvlistings.aol.com seems to imply it will be the first ep, but it has been wrong several times and even says the last ep of the RMA is to be aired next week so I say it is wrong this time and Wiki is right.
Okay after seeing the first episode tonight I have to say I'm very very impressed at Funimation. I think what blew my mind is they took OP#3 and translated it to English and sang it along with the ending too. That's just amazing they would do something like that. Original music left in tact too, over all I'm just very very pleased with what they've done. I will be buying the uncut box sets now.
I must say, Funimation's done pretty well with One Piece so far. Not one of their best, but I'll be watching this. :>
It's episode 144, btw. I dunno what arc it is. :<
The arc is Skypeia arc, it's quite a good one at that and a decently long one, it'll put Funimation to the test to see how things go because there are quite a lot of battles in this one. I'm just hopping to sail through this one to get the Water 7 to hear Franky.
Huh, according to Wikipedia, this is the Jaya Arc which is part of the Skypeia Saga.
I missed it. I can't believe I missed it. And it wasn't my fault. I was ready to watch toonami yesterday and my family suddenly wanted to go off taking me and do various things like getting a new microwave, eat out, and get mucenex medicene at Jewel Osco, starting at around 7:30 and ending at basically 9:25, only to hear the straw hats say a few things and the credits roll. Now all I can do is watch small clips of the episode on Youtube.
This wouldn't be so bad if Toonami didn't do its "show the episode once and never again" tatic.
I'm still wating for those "post sudden hiatus before Dark Tournament finals" episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho not to mention the saga after it again alot of which I horribly missed especially its ending.
It's on Youtube now (three parts).

I like it. OP is actually...watchable!
I doubt its legality Ultra, but thank you. Didn't want it to stop.
The legality of Youtube itself is doubtable.
I still kinda don't like it, although it's infinitely less heartbreaking than the 4kids one.
I have to say, I love this. Luci makes a GREAT Nami.

You shouldn't just barrel through Skypiea, it has several things which come up in Water 7/Enies Lobby arcs. Even IF Franky is the most awesome thing to happen to One Piece since we met Luffy.
Compared to the other dub, this is a work of art.
~Tobe
I've got no problem with them barreling through Skypiea, I've already seen it and I really don't want to hear Satori again.
But Luffy vs. Enel round 1 is hilarious. Though I agree. No one wants to hear that "Oh-ho-hoooo!", I didn't want to hear it the FIRST time. But I LOVED every other Priest fight in there. Particularly Gedatsu's.
My impressions of the second episode.
Funi Buggy > 4Kids Buggy
Funi Alvida > 4Kids Alvida
D: @ Ace still being called Trace, but I'm not that bugged.
Also, I like Ace's voice, but I don't have a 4Kids version to compare it with (never heard that version).
Also, after a second episode, I have this conclusion.
Funi Usopp >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 4Kids Usopp
i think the new dub is allright, but the voices feel so incredibly different. like sanji's is better, but IMO Zolo's is worse. robin's isn't bad. and thank god luffy has a new voice. but is it just me or does these new ones seem like they are lower quality?
It's not as edited as the 4Kids version. Ultra: I seem to remember them saying Ace'd still be Trace in the televised dub so as not to confuse the kiddies.
I'd like to make this comment though. As a fan of both One Piece and Desert Punk, I find it infinitely hilarious that Sanji is Desert Punk himself...
Funi Usopp sounds like Krillin. ^-^
The only real downside is Zolo's voice. Sabat just doesn't fit, you know. At first, I didn't like how Luffy sounded either, but I've changed my mind about it.
Overall, it's not Funimation's best, but it works for me if I'm actually looking forward to watching the episodes for once.
I've still got a lot to catch up on, though. XD
Don't worry guys all names will be their originals in the DVDs, Funi has said so they just have to keep them on the air like that due to Viz's manga rights here in the US (for some reason they get all says too) and of course the issue with Zoro's name. But DVDs fix everything. =D
And Roy Mustang from FMA as Ace is just awesome. =D

Funi Usopp IS Krillin. Same VA. Zoro is also Piccolo/S2 Vegeta.
