Damn. I don't know of any good place to put my 360 vertical....how balanced is the 360 on it's side? Would it be safe on the floor, vertical, by my TV? There's no other place I could fit it that could even PASS for ventilated.
It probably would'nt work right if you did that. 
If your floor is carpet, do not put it on the floor at all, unless you want a nice toasty system. In fact, that goes for all three of the current gen systems. Carpet = quick death.

My carpet is pretty flat, but I don't have any other place to put it except under my PS3 (lolz) or maybe over my DVD player (= hot exhaust). Or behind my TV, whhich will be a pain in the ass and not ventilated at all.

Buy a fridge and put your Xbox 360 in that.
I had my 360 RRoD, I think it was about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks before Halo 3 came out. My brother hated the fact he had to stare at the case for 3 days, wanting to play it.
