It started with an episode of Family Guy, in which Brian sings "Never gonna Give you up" making fun of the scene at the end of Back to the Future. After that they started showing up everywhere and know it's become so dumb that only people at 4Chan do it anymore. As for the name, The guy's name is Rick Astely, so hat's where the Rickroll part comes in. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong I'm going on memory alone.

Rickroll was in use long before that episode of Family Guy debuted. The Rickroll meme is a derivative form of the Duckroll meme that took /b/ by storm in late 2006. It started when Anons deliberately started linking to a thread about a picture of a duck with wheels in order to deceive other Anons, confusing and infuriating those who clicked. Later, it would be a Youtube video with the picture that would be linked to.
/v/ would later go on to invent the Rickroll, which was basically linking someone to the Astley video on Youtube.

The entire internet went downhill from there.

Change the name to "Italian Plumbers Dont Wear Ties" and you have Mario the movie lol
