Porn kings Larry Flint and Joe Francis go begging for a bailout

Is the porn industry up next for a bailout? If porn titans Joe Francis and Larry Flynt have anything to do with it, it will.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, the titans of pornography are begging for a bailout.

Joe Francis, creator of the "Girl's Gone Wild" video series, and Larry Flynt, founder of Hustler, will ask Congress for a $5 billion bailout, according to TMZ.

Why does the porn industry need a bailout? Because apparently even porn is getting smacked by the recession.

XXX DVD sales have taken a hit - about a 22% hit, according the TMZ.

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind," Flynt is quoted as saying on TMZ. "It's time for Congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America."

Francis thinks that the porn industry deserves a bailout just like the auto and financial industries got, and he said he'll go to DC to get it, according to TMZ.

"Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation's most important businesses; we feel we deserve the same consideration," Francis is quoted as saying on TMZ.

Is the porn industry really experiencing a severe downturn? It depends on who you ask.

Francis Koenig's fund AdultVest, which invests in porn-related assets, was up 50% in 2008, according to Tom Johansmeyer's article in next month's Atlantic (as reported by The Huffington Post). But video sales are down.

"The industry's not going anywhere," Koenig says. "You've got 6 billion people on the planet," he laughs, "and they're all horny."

The porn industry generated about $12 billion in 2007, according to the Atlantic article.

Well, my initial reaction was that if they gave one to the auto industry they should give one to the porn industry, but then again you don't fix one mistake by making another. (Not saying the auto bailout was necessarily a mistake, nor that it wasn't, I'm just making a point about messing things up worse for consistency.) I guess it should depend on how well the reasons for one apply to the other, and whether or not such jobs in that industry can be as easily replaced. If it's something quite unlike the auto bailout and if they have reason to believe that most of the people employed in the porn industry could find jobs elsewhere, maybe they could tell Joe Francis and Larry Flint to go **** themselves.

(Not that I really ever heard of them before this story)

Also, I like MCranberry's comment. XD

I'm with Rishi on this one.

Last time I paid for porn was when I got my very first debit card. And I was like, huh. $3 for 3 day trial for UNLIMITED PORN DOWNLOADS!? SIGN ME UP!!!

Yeah. Lots o porn downloaded to my hard drive in 3 days. Lots o porn deleted a day later after guilt swept through me. I may be a horny man, but damn it to hell if I don't have any self respect.

Either way, that's BS. DVD sales being low does not make for a dying industry. Especially when the industry, right now, relies more on the innanet.

People only pay for porn when buying the videos or checking out the exclusive sites. Most people who like the good stuff, like me, just download it for free on random sites.

Note to self: do not mention URLs of those random sites here

I don't pay for porn either, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people were used to buying porn movies instead of looking stuff up on the Internet.

We will NOT have a porn exchange board.

Remember rule 36!

New MoFo Rules wrote:

36. No porn unless approved by myself, in which after will result in an immediate ban.

So you can tell me. You just ain't comin' back.

I thought Rule 36 was "if it exists, someone has a fetish for it. No exceptions."

I think Jinsoku was referring to his own "Rule 36"

I was convinced this was an Onion style parody of the automotive "kings" of industry getting their bailout.

Searching Google News brought the truth and it was disheartening. Perhaps they have a sense of humor, or are wishing to exploit the current crisis.

But what I can guaranteee is that the government will have no active hand in aiding or fueling the pornography industry. So, in the grand scheme of things this is at worst a sick joke at best a publicity stunt.

Weed should be legalised too. Then an age limit could be put on it, it could be taxed and millions of new jobs could be created.

you know, i say they should be allowed to bail out! Porn is a vital industry in the us, which generates quite a few jobs and they generate products which are able to be sold year round at a decently stable rate. so yeah, is say they should do it. lulz, get it?
