Hi all,

I'm in the market for a budget Sat Nav. Anyone had any experience with this one - Garmin Nuvi 255W Auto / Road GPS ? Are Garmin reputable?

Thanks!

It's not the destination that's important, it's the journey

i read somewhere that people get lost with the GPS cause the darn thing is too stupid to map out side roads or updates its info, last christmas i think 2 or 3 american families got lost in the open roads.

maps are very important, even if you get a GPS you shouldn't go without a map (make sure that map is up to date though)

Actually answering your question: Garmin seems reputable. Might not have celebrity voices, though. And, as other posters have noted, you do need to be careful and not just follow it blindly if it leads you down a dead end road or towards a lake or cliff edge...

Saying "buy a map" is all well and good, but if you're driving cross country without a navigator, it's damn hard to read the map when you need to know which exit off the roundabout you want to take.

I would still advocate having a road map, just in case, but if your satnav gets you lost in Leicester because the one-way systems have changed, unless you happen to have a Leicester A-Z, you're still going to be in trouble.

*goes to look at the opening post* Well, I'll be I didn't even noticed that Creo had edited it until you said something, Srol!

Indeed, if you check the user posting history you'll see that they have spammed the same thing multiple times across multiple forums (will probably be yuku banned by Monday when staff arrive back at work). Also the link they used appeared to be affiliate based, as such was edited away so that they don't get any leads, but leaving this thread intact for "discussion" instead of being deleted/CJ'd etc.

There is barely any one way systems in Leicester! I know, I live there! o.-

I find my truckers UK map does me fine, it's considerably more detailed than average AA maps and such. Got it cheap from The Works. If I still get lost I'll just drive til I find a sign showing me where I want to go.

[edit] WOW cor blimey my sig actually works?!

D'oh!  That'll teach me not to check the forum more often (and indeed to notice the edits).  My points still stand, though

The one-way system I'm thinking of is lurking around Fleetwood Road / Lytham Road - so to be fair, a rather specific part of Leicester!  I just spent ages going round and round because the sat nav kept trying to get me to go back up the one-way street the wrong way.  However, previously it had been very useful when I'd missed an exit on a roundabout - it works out a new route instead, sorted!

Another potent argument for buying a TomTom when I eventually upgrade...

The first argument would have been this one ( http://www.tomtom.com/page/kitt), but William Daniels sounds rather like he was phoning in his performance. Actually, had he used an actual phone it would probably have sounded more like KITT. Come on, there needs to be a synthesiser edge to it, or I'm just being guided by the dude from St Elsewhere (or Boy Meets World, whichever you prefer)!

Ah, man. I expected to see something from China with its rather dodgy English/punctuation, as if machine translated. That bot freaking came from England. Sadface
