Yeah, I found this article on Sonic-Cult and I was kind of interested on the forum's thoughts. Do you think Sonic fans are a too obsessive or is this author being a bitter idiot?
Uhhhh, you might want to throw a language warning up for that.
I think the guy is just an idiot. He's just labeling one type of Sonic fan (mostly pervs and furries) and then saying every fan is the same. You can find Hentai stuff about any video game character that was created. Plus what's wrong with drawing and writing fanfics, that is stories that actually have a good plot. Not much different than what I've seen on the Harry Potter side.
Why did he post a fan art of Sonic and Sally if she's not from any video game, yet he fails to mention any of the Sonic cartoons?!
The problem is, I'd say hardcore Sonic fans are terrible, but no worse than say; Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pokeymans, Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts fans.
But the trouble is: those franchises are actually producing stuff that is half good to justify the levels of fanaticism that surrounds them, whereas Sonic isn't.
i knew this would be from SA and i never even go there. it's just another article that shames the writer more than the subject material/people involved with subject material. see: 1032564383757920485608 articles about people being on-topic on weird forums for weird things. after reading it all it's not quite as bad as those as he's not really going out of his way to actually mock people and simply exaggerating to the point of total lies and is earnestly trying reeeaaaalllyyyy haaaarrrdddd to make it funny.
the sonic fans he tries to refer to in the article don't include pretty much any of us; there's just a few here and there on this forum, which is pretty good considering sonic has one of the worst fanbases ever.
Actually. I'd say the writer is onto something.
It's true we're just as bad as other fandoms, the difference is we vastly out number them. You can't walk ten paces without walking into a Sonic styled anthro.
We're the ignored minority, legitimate fans who wish to discuss a game series which is so dead and decaying that no one kicked up a fuss even when a decent (Sonic Rush Adventure) game came out.
I'm ok with it.
Though, if the characters in Final Fantasy were furry, I'm sure the article would be about that instead, as the FF fanbase are about the only ones I know which can rival the Sonic internet fanbase's size.

I can't say I disagree...ever scoured the bowels of Deviantart..
He forgot myspace, and to a lesser extent, youtube. Therefore this article cannot be salvaged. However, I do agree with Sonic being on there somewhere.
LMAO at Urban Dictionary. That's all I can say... LOL
lol yes @ OTB
Myspace should have been on that list. I had a myspace account... until I ended up receiving about 3 friend requests a week from people such as XxXaNgLeDeAmOrXxX... With Facebook, I haven't received a single spam friend request.
I'm not getting as many dumb friend requests from people I don't know on myspace as I used to. Facebook, however, I get friggin' requests for applications to add to it almost every day, and those are from people I KNOW, lol. Still the same degree of irritability.
The Letter L, South Park, and Korea articles are so true.

The typical Cyber Libertarian supported the Iraq war until the moment the polls turned sour and deflects difficult issues of social libertarianism by crying "state's rights!" They lack all human empathy, are perfectly happy to return to segregation as long as it doesn't raise their taxes, and have almost invariably never gone without for a single day of their lives. They probably suffer from self-diagnosed Asperger's Syndrome, but don't we all.
These are the monsters weaned on South Park, the scions of the Internet Age. The Cyber Libertarians will one day rule the Internet, and they may just get Ron Paul up to four percent in the polls!

Good god what he said. If you take SOMETHINGAWFUL serious, I am sorry, you are an idiot. I really mean that in a way to make no offense at all, but seeing as some of us are taking this with offense, I am afraid I am too late.
While a good basis of most of their mockery articles have some truth in them, (ANY freakin' crazy fandom that over does it is creepy, and unfortunately the Sonic fandom falls into the furry category; GUESS WHAT MAJORITY OF THE FURRY COMMUNITY IS "REALLY OPEN" AND CREEPS PEOPLE OUT, thus we get pulled into the mess...), the point of Somethingawful is to piss you the Eff off.
Again, if you take it seriously, your head's not on straight. Fact: huge fandoms creep everyone out, just like religion creeps me the duck out; why do people follow the stuff? I don't know. If you choose to be a part of it, get ready to be pointed out by the "norm". That's all.
The people of SA are great, and most of the staff are good people with an actual thought process, which you do not find much of that left on the good ol' internets. In fact, I post in GBS more than I do MoFo on a weekly basis. If the humor is not for you, turn away, don't go; the same reasoning we use when we throw a fit on mommies and daddies buying Jimmy the M rated Hos and Cop Killa 3, then blame the game.
Hey I didn't take it THAT seriously and I didn't get offended. I just thought I post it here; jeez, you didn't have to rant.
Obviously you did, or else you wouldn't have replied to Jin's reply like that
*sigh* This article I didn't enjoy reading but still some people try and push everyone into the same light if you like one thing.

I'm pretty sure that Final Fantasy and Harry Potter have a much, much larger fanbase than Sonic. But like you mentioned the only differences is that they are not a gateway to furry-life.
That said, old SA article is old and lol @ people getting butthurt over SA.
No, but I'm surprised that somebody's not making more noise about the slashier end of the Potter fandom as a gateway to homosexuality and paedophilia - especially since Rowling outed Dumbledore.
SA're entitled to their opinion. Unless they bring it over here, I'm entitled to take it with a pinch of salt.
^It's Something Awful. Furries are the lowest of the low of the nerdugery, several leagues below the nutty slashers there.
Though it's not like the Sonic franchise is immune to slash anyway.
Besides this article was created a couple of months before Dumbles outing.
When I looked at that article only one thought came to mind.
*Shrug*
Really, they have their opinion. I have mine. You guys have yours. I mean, I watch Familiy Guy/South Park/etc. Those are MEANT to be offensive. As long as you don't let it get to you, you can understand the jokes.
Anyway, "To each his own".
The serious "Well tehy can have that opinion" replies are about as amusing as the serious I R OFFENDD replies.
The Sonic fandom is, just as almost any other, terrible.
But, Something Awful is a cynical comedy website--as a viewer of it for more than four years, I can assure you, it's meant to piss off people who take things on the internet seriously and to amuse those who don't. Don't dwell on it.
I love being a freak. :3
