Teenager dead, dozens injured from 36 car pile up on I-390

New York State police confirm a teenager was killed in a 36 car pile up on I-390 southbound Sunday afternoon. 17 year old Le Ngo was pronounced dead this evening at Strong Memorial Hospital. Police tell News 8 Now that the Ngo was a passenger in a car that was caught in the middle of the enormous pile-up.

In all, 25 people were transported to area hospitals; 12 people were taken to Unity Hospital, six were treated and released, 9 were taken to Strong Hospital, three were taken to Highland Hospital. Five people remain in critical condition at Strong Hospital. Injuries include fractures, head injuries and internal injuries. Rochester General Hospital did not take any victims from the crash, however, is handling any overflow of emergency patients from Strong and Unity Hospital not relating to the crash for the remainder of the night.

In a news conference Sunday evening police say white-out conditions may have contributed to a multi-car pile up on the north bound lanes of I-390 near Scottsville Road in Gates. Snow was not falling at the time but wind gusts may have contributed to the blowing snow over the highway at the time. I-390 southbound and northbound lanes reopened between Scottsville Road and Brooks Avenue just after 6 p.m . Tune in to News 8 Now at 6:30 p.m. for the latest information on this accident.

My dad actually called home from Rochester this evening to let us know that he wasn't involved in that accident. It was said on one of the other news channels that a white out resulted in someone getting blinded as a result, and next thing you know there was a crash and a chain reaction that followed. It was pretty bad, and I heard this made national news. It was described on News 10 as being like a Junk Yard that it was so bad. o.o

Remember folks! Leave one car length for every ten miles per hour when following someone.

lol wut @ 1 car length for every 10mph... So that means when I'm going 70 down 35W... XD XD XD, Rico would curled up in a little ball lol... yeah, I'm doing good if I have A SINGLE car length between me and the next car...

That said, that's only when conditions are favorable... Whiteout conditions? I don't care where I am, I'm staying there.

The way we're taught it in the UK is to leave a two-second gap between yourself and the car in front during normal conditions; 2x it when in rain, and 10x it when in fog and ice. o.o

I'm surprised only 1 person was killed if it involved 36 cars.

how can a white-out blind someone? did the snow get in their eyes, or was it after having an accident? oo; *is making an educated guess that 'white out' means a blizzard*

I thought it was "Only a fool breaks the *three* second rule". Apparently it does equate in some way to the stopping distances we learnt for our theory tests and then promptly forgot.

I know one thing, though - those chevrons on the motorway inviting you to keep your distance do tend to show you how close to each other people usually drive.

I must admit, we appear to have had fewer fog-caused pile-ups in recent years. I remember when I was younger there were regular multiple crashes on the motorways in fog because people insisted on travelling too close to the car in front and continuing to do 75mph...

the chevrons are a good idea, it's nearly the only time i see most drivers staying a good distance from each other.
other times it seems to be normal driving to practically sit on the car in front's boot if you want to overtake them and they're going too slowly in your lane. >>;

Yeah, Whiteout == Extremely thick fog... then you ad in the fact the roads are now slippery with this snow.

A 36 car pileup killed only one person? Guess it could be worse.

Yeah... I hope to god you are 99% defensive on the road then, and watching what happens one or two cars ahead of the car in front of you.

I'm no speed racer, but I drive fast, and I know of the 1-car-10mph rule. It's actually not that big of a gap considering the speed you're going, then adding the amount of time of reaction you'll have for, say, someone trying to go 70 to 0 in about 2 seconds in front of you.

Tailgating sucks... don't tailgate. One flaw and you're screwed, not to mention it will always, without a doubt, be your fault, even if the car in front of you suckered you into it to squeeze you out of insurance money.

In any case, that is a terrible, terrible pile up. It's bad enough that I saw a van earlier last month spin out of control onto the other lane on IL-20, and slam into a truck on his side - lucky bastard, he would've kept going down hill if it weren't for that truck. That was scary as schnitzel.

You had to pass a test that most likely ASKED that question Boston, or you wouldn't be driving.

Not that I follow it, but I do know the rules. I just choose to drive like a retard.

lol, I passed my driving test by 1 point... damned Parallel parking =

But yeah, I'm a pretty defensive driver... The only time I tailgate is when the idiot in the left lane decides to go 40 in a 60 zone =

I feel your pain. When I was 17 I could parallel park par excellence. Then I stopped driving for about 6 years. Now I can't parallel park for toffee. It meant that an absolute pre-requisite when I bought my first home was that it had at least a normal bay parking space allocated, if not a drive & garage - no more parking on the street, driving a mile from my flat in order to find a space I could just drive into...

*shudders*

But yeah, one car length isn't enough if the guy in front needs to do an emergency stop.

I was on a motorway one day, doing the speed limit. It was sunny, but there was a thunderstorm nearby that was dumping torrential rain on the motorway about a mile ahead. I had a feeling the weather might go bad in a second, so I'd left a huge gap between me and the car in front. Darn lucky, too.

The guy in front braked, I started to slow down and then realised he was in fact practically doing an emergency stop. I had to slam on the brakes as hard as I ever have in my life, with the added bonus of having the wheels lock and the car start swerving. Oh for ABS! Plus you never think of pumping the brakes when you're busy panicking.

After not quite swerving into the other lane, over-correcting and coming damn close to burying myself in the central reservation, I came to a stop about a car's length behind him. Turned out there had been a sudden downpour that brought visibility down to nothing about half a mile ahead and the chain reaction from that culminated in emergency stops in the outside lane. Fun!

Since then, I have a relatively healthy respect for stopping distances...

i don't trust motorways, especially after a broom bounced off the back of a van infront of my dad's car and hit us. a few miles later and cars going past us frantically waving and flashing their lights, we pulled over and descovered that the broom had lodged itself deep into the radiator. oo;; i'm glad it didn't hit the windscreen instead!

Motorways are one of the greatest inventions of the modern world. One can get where one wishes to go at around 70mph, with no traffic lights, no pedestrians and no cyclists. All one has to do is keep a sharp eye on the lorry that might try to pull out on you and make arrangements to be elsewhere when it does.

Seriously, I love motorways, I know where I am with them and I can "read the road". City centres, country roads and anything in between I hate because you never know what's around the next corner. Or indeed which mad student will step out in front of you ;)
