i'd heard of his stroke recently, but i didn't know of the full story or this either. ox; yeesh, that not good news.
At least he's got enough money to afford the sort of high end treatments that you can't get on the NHS... 🙁
like a ward not infected with MRSA? >>;
If I remember rightly, there're a couple of drugs which really slow it to a crawl in the early stages, which the NHS won't prescribe because they're not cost effective. It's still only a way of managing the decline, though. 🙁
i heard about those when the daily mail was running some sort of campaign for older people. they can delay it starting by a few more years.. slowing or preventing something sounds way more desirable then giving out drugs to someone already far along. ox;
OK this absolutely and totally SUCKS ASS. I haven't read much Discworld at all, but what very little I have read I liked. It's one of those series that i've been meaning to dedicate myself in full but haven't. Seriously - guys got talent and I really hate to see this happen. I hope he can maintain before it becomes serious.
This is really sad =/ Like WB I haven't read much of his stuff but he's got a bloody good imagination and sense of humour on him. It's ironic, really. And I hate that.
Wes (THS) is quite upset about this. He's a huge fan and as far as I understand he's read all of the Discworld books so~
For some reason I was expecting this to be a thread about how The Discworld series is about to jump the shark.
I wish that was the case now...
I keep meaning to read a Pratchett book.
In the words of a nameless bystander, "Say it ain't so, Mister Vimes!"
It is truly saddening to hear of his affliction despite the apparent sharpness of his mind. It's like hearing the Patrician has been shot; unbelievable but true. I can only hope that Alzheimer's takes its time on Mister Pratchett, who's given us so many memorable moments, places, and characters in his career.
In some ways, I hope it doesn't. Once it starts, the decline's agonising for everyone involved. :-/
This is a sad report but as he said he's not dead yet. There's a lot of research going into AD treatment. There's no cure but as some pointed out the onset of AD can be slowed. Even taking anti-inflammatory drugs like advil or aleve can help.
He's one heck of an author. I wish we had more like him.
This is a great shame.
I'm not good at reading books, and have yet to read one of his, but hearing the audio version of one of his books, playing Discworld Noir, watching The Hogfather, they are all wonderful because of him.
Hopefully he can get the best treatment out there, whether he writes another book or not isn't important, what is is that he and his family can go on happily without this getting in the way.
Wow. That sucks.... Really, really sucks.
I don't know what else to say. I've been a big fan of Mr. Pratchetts since being introduced to the Discworld series via the game on the Saturn, and this has just been a kick in the teeth.
