I bet I can safely assume that most, if not all of you know about American flag raising over Iwo Jima in WWII. It's an extremely famous picture of 4 US Marines pushing up a flag.
One of the largely unknown facts about this historic picture is this wasn't the first flag raised there. It was actually a replacement.
The last living member of the first flag raisers died Sunday.
Probably the saddest part of this story is how no one believed him when he said he raised the flag. The second group who put up the replacement flag were recognized, but not the first.
Wow that is sad. I know that picture very well. Had no idea that was not the 1st time. Hmm...
I remember that.
I wonder what life will be like once the last WWII veterans die a few decades from now...
Yea man like America will be an entirely new country. It's weird to think about.
What's also sad is that we're almost there with WWI, which was in its own right a devastating war. Yet no one plans to commemorate those who fought the "Great War".
RIP, Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima. Be happy.
Most Americans can't really claim to know much about World War One. A lot of the empires and countries in that war haven't been around for just under a century...
