EDIT:See my most recent post for the first movie assignment
This was an idea I got the other night while leafing through my copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It was originally for a MoFo Book club, but I decided that would be too difficult for a loose online medium. Then I saw the Movie topic, and how big its grown.
Here at the MoFo, we like movies.
So what I'm suggesting is a regular discussion group based around talking about a movie, selected by a different member each week. The discussion could be anywhere between the complex ("the white doves represent innocence, so they contrast with the brutal actions taking place on the screen and present an interesting dichotomy") to the superficial ("his face is stupid"). I don't know about you guys, but I see a lot of movies by myself and have no one to discuss them with, so I think this would be a lot of fun.
Some ground rules.
1. Movies selected must be movies available on DVD and VHS in the UK and the US. I know that cuts out a lot of foreign stuff and anime, but the idea here is to pick a movie any member can easily rent or buy.
2. I will select the first week's movie just to get the ball rolling, after that though, the selector will be chosen randomly each week via dice roll. No one will get to go twice until everyone has picked a movie once and vice versa.
3. No complaining about a member's choice of movie. You'll get your turn, and I'm sure plenty of people will hate it.
4. Along the same lines, I don't want to discourage criticism, but keep your criticism focussed on the movie rather than the person who selected it. This is the MoFo, so naturally all of the MoFo's rules apply.
5. If you've seen the movie selected before, it would be preferable if you'd watch it again so you'll be up to date with everyone else.
6. A discussion topic for the movie will be created one week after a movie is announced, and the new movie will be selected a week after that. So one week to watch the movie, one week to discuss. That's 2 movies a month.
So that's it. Who's interested? After I get a few takers, I'll announce the first movie, and start drawing up a pool for who will select the next one.
Sounds interesting, I'll give it that.
I'm in.
You expected me not to show up for this? I'm practically the MoFo Movie Guy. But not...
My movie challenge needs more fuel anyway.
Hey why not? I rent junk from Blockbuster all the time, mostly on recomendation of friends.
i'm basically the same as miss puar... so i'm in.
Hell yeah I'll join. I love to have a good discussion about movies.
"Nearest" is relative.
To get to my nearest video rental store, I either have to get a lift for an hour each way or get up at 10am for the sole bus out of this particular lump of the boondocks, followed by a lift again for the final five miles of the return trip, since I can't get another bus.
I'll do what I can to keep up with things, but to be honest, I'd have preferred a book club. Libraries're more plentiful, and borrowing books is cheaper than rental - even before bus fares to get to the store.
Hmm...I don't rent movies all that much, but i'll surely check in to see if the movie being discussed is one I own. So...count me in? =]
I am so in on this... if it's a movie I've seen, since it might be hard to get DVDs. Personally I'd like a new movie edition of it too, so when a new major movie comes out we could start a topic on it. BTW, we can do a book club too.
Yeah, I guess I'll join, I'll just rent the movies from the library =o
Dudes, I am sooo pumped for this... I freakin' love movies
You can't rent movies from the library, Sam?
I'm in, I own like 600+ and I have two friends that own respectively 1300 and 3300 movies (NO OVERLAP!)So I'm DEFINITLY down for it.
But watch the first movie have me like "WHA?!?! I NO SEE IT!"
Sam and Vec, if either one of you wants to take charge of a MoFo book club, that'd be awesome. I just found the idea a little intimidating to organize.
I'd say leave registration for the club open for a week.
After that, take the list of people and just choose an order... first come first to decide... any new comers will be added on to the end of the list.
Hell, if you want, I'll organize it... Problem is I lack Mod powers, so edit would be difficult.
It's not that hard. Keep sign up open for a week. After that, choose the order by first come, first up. Any new members will be added in at the end of the rotation.
Hell, I'd be willing to organize this... I just lack mod powers for editing lists and such
Sounds like a great idea. I'd be willing to join, too.
The first movie of the MoFo movie club will be, "The Bourne Identity." I recently saw the most recent installation and was surprised with how few people I knew had seen the first movie, and how little I rememberred of the first.
So just so we're clear on the procedure, you have from right now until next Friday to watch the Bourne Identity. Please, no discussion until then, so we can give people plenty of time to watch it. Then, next Friday night, I'll create the discussion topic, and we'll get started.
Also, next Friday when I create the discussion topic, I'll also roll the dice to see who gets to pick the next movie.
Anyway, let's get cracking!
Swear I just posted... *blinks* Anywho.
I'm up for it. RiffTrax just posted a commentary on Bourne anyway and Ultimatum is almost out.

For anyone who wants some commentary to go with their movie.

My local library is very much a one horse town scenario. There're two spinners of DVDs - one for Welsh language stock and one catering very much for the fact that the major library demographic around here is 60+.
I just did an online catalogue search. There's one copy of that movie in the entire county, it's two weeks overdue to be returned (which means that there's a high probability that someone else fed up of not having much of a service has swiped it) and the branch is an hour's drive away.
Reserving/requesting would be an additional cost to the $4 rental fee.
I'll see what I can do, anyway...
But there're reasons why living out here drives me crazy. 🙁
Wlesh language stock. Wow. Woooow >> Honestly, I'm intrigued by that for some weird reason.
But I can see your difficulty. o.o And I'm suspecting your computer can't really handle large downloads, otherwise I'd say just torrent each film :O
They need to make teleporters now...i mean come on , its 2007 >> My Flying car isint here..
Sarah... have you ever considered getting a LoveFilm account? It's as cheap as 5 to have rentals shipped to your doorstep?
I'm on the unlimited 3 movie/game package which allows me to rent as many titles as I want and for as long as I want (rule being I can only have 3 discs at any time), slam it in the postbox and 3 days later I have more discs.
I pay like 15 a month for the privlidge and it's one of the best things I've done with my life.
I know money's tight for you and all, but if you were considering renting 4 titles for this per week, paying 10 a month would be the cheaper and more convinient option.
I'm in when I can afford to be, though funds are tight at present due to summer travelling.
I can suggest films until they flow out of peoples' ears, though.
Like you say, Craig: I'm on a benefits level budget ($120 per week). I'll look into it, though.
I'll be honest - I'm not above Torrents. But since the maximum broadband speed that the exchange here can handle is 2MB, they take a while.
Again, I'll see what I can do.
You should list the order of picks up top, Srol!
(omg #999... You know what that means, right?)
I have it, I watched it recently. =O If you guys would, like, fly out to a US Walmart you'll see a bunch for cheap because Ultimatum is out. Who else has read the book?
Okay, it's past Friday the 17th... TIME TO DISCUSS THE MOVIE FOLKS!
Okay, I do not want this thread to die... So here is my thoughts on the first movie in the Bourne Trilogy...
In my opinion it gives up a fresh break from the tired and true spy movie formula. Bourne isn't some tricked out government agent on a mission to take out some Nazi/Commie/uber bad guy... Hell, he doesn't even remember who he is. All he knows is he isn't normal.
This is probably my least favorite of the trilogy. The second one I felt more connected to Bourne due to the... uh... very emotional thing that happened within the first 5 minutes. The third movie was just as good. The ending was amazing
So yeah. Guys, let's make some quick comments on this and then figure out who picks next... If need be, I'll start a new thread so I can manage it...
