Yes, I know this thread is way too early. No, this is not a parody of stores' Christmas habits. I'm serious.

So, what do you plan on doing this October 31st? Dress up and go trick-or-treating? Decorate your house to scare off small children and keep the candy to yourself? Chase whippersnappers off your property? Are you going to dress up the day before for school or work?

Personally, I'm planning on dressing up, but not Trick-or-Treating. Maybe I'll get invited to a party or something but I don't really expect anything like that. So far, I'm not entirely sure what I'll do, but I have a few ideas: Longcat (Not kidding), Pyro or Scout from TF2, and either Psycho Mantis or Otacon from the Metal Gear Solid Series.

Personally, I'm leaning toward Otacon right now. Most people will D= at me for choosing such an easy costume (I mean, all I really have to do is cut and color my hair...), but if I do decide t do it, I'm buying myself an RC car, ripping it apart and reassembling it into Metal Gear MKII. It will be awesome.

So how about you guys?

yes this is quite early, what's the deal?

anyway, I found a labcoat in my closet last month, and I think I'll iron on an Aperture science logo to it. I'll just wear it during school, I'm too uh grown up for trick or treating, obviously.

as christians, we don't celebrate halloween.. but we have sweets by the door to hand out if any kids knock. hopefully the shops will remember to ban those under 16 from buying flour and eggs again, the town was a right mess one year. >>;

but i should be in canada by then, so it'll probably be like any other day.

Being old and British I frown upon Halloween and those that partake in this event. Also I tell those people knocking on the door and harassing me (even bordering on aggressive) for cash (it seems that kids/chavs are no longer interested in sweets but cash hand outs) to bugger off.
tl;dr- Halloween can piss off forever.

edit: font size was all wrong...

Living in a flat, I have absolutely zero trick-or-treaters, yay!

I plan to have received my copy of "Back Up" by Jim Butcher and will be celebrating Dresden's birthday by reading it. Unless it arrives early, in which case I will have finished it by then

Maybe I'll hunt out "Monster Mash" on Tesco Digital as well...

I presume because although Hallowe'en is short for All Hallows Eve (and All Hallows is a date in the Catholic calendar on which I believe saints are honoured), the event as it stands is based on pagan traditions. Trick or treating? That would be the druids going from dwelling to dwelling with carved swedes / turnips as lanterns, seeking to bless the occupiers. They sought some form of recompense such as food or drink and those dwellers who didn't pay up could expect to be cursed.

My knowledge of Christianity is limited, but I don't recall the Bible saying that All Hallows Eve was the night when God allowed evil spirits to roam the earth, either...

However, I'm sure Becca can correct some of my more wildly inaccurate understandings in this post

*shrugs* in my area, the christians just don't celebrate halloween. it's all about witchcraft and roughly what DW said.. thought it'd be obvious why. we have our own alternative celebration for the kids. ^^

plus many kids use it as an excuse to smash things up and demand cash. it's not often the cutesy kids in a happy neighbourhood trotting around in cute costumes and getting candy like they keep showing in american movies. i don't mind going to halloween themed parties and the kids? those that ask for sweets are fine, they're just out for freebies even if their 'costume' is just their hood up and paper mask... ^^;
but i'm not going to celebrate demons and witchcraft.
just don't take this as a rant or anything, ok? :p go do whatever you like on that day.

I kind of like halloween because I like being silly and creeping out small children with growling at them/pretending to murder my brother at the door.

But on the other hand it's kind of crap as well, and I'd rather have Bonfire night. Also effort.

Thus this year I shall dress as a pirate. By which I mean I shall buy some rum.

Yeah, my family never did for pretty much everything Becca and DW said. Usually, I'm just dress as me, myself, and I, but this year, since everybody says, I look like Mario and I can imitate the Red One vocally, I'm thinking about dressing up as Mario for work, were allowed to wear costumes at work, and even get a nametag to say Mario on it. If I don't chicken out, which is very likely with me, I'm not even going to talk to costumers or CSMs and just talk like Mario for the whole day; course, I'm gonna talk to my coworkers regularly.

Park my pooch in the front yard so I may play videogames in peace...

Oh you mean seriously? I'll either be working or be too tired from work to realize it is Halloween.

*shrug* My family's pretty devout Catholic and we've never had religious issue with Halloween. Granted, it's more of an accepted thing that everybody does in America without any deeper implications (although if you're in Catholic school, you get the next day off =D )

I can see why maybe it's a bigger deal in England because it hasn't been around for as long (in its current form) and so it's not as widespread accepted. Think of it like Guy Fawkes Day. How many Brits look at as an anti-Catholic celebration as opposed to a chance to light off some fireworks? Ditto with Halloween. No one sees it as the prelude to All Saints, or some pagan holiday, just a fun chance to dress up and get some candy.

As for me, I have the perfect Blues Brothers costume if I could just track down a fedora. Of course, the sad thing is sans fedora, it's just one of my regular work outfits.

GAH! It's too early to think about Halloween. I'm still working out things for Anime Weekend Atlanta. One costume event at a time, please.

That said, who knows what I'll be doing the day itself, but my anime club's gonna be having a Halloween party the meeting of the Saturday before, so I'll need to come up with a costume for that. Last year I threw together a Mario outfit for it. And I'm not entirely certain what work's "Halloween and dressing up" policy extends to.

All the same, the craft stores around here have started putting their Fall/Halloween stuff out, reminding me that my favorite time of the year is coming up (October 1 through January 1).

Go get a toy lightsaber. I saw a Travis cosplayer at Ikasucon who was using one of the fun, cheap collapsible-blade lightsabers.

I think you christians just don't want people to have candy.

There WAS that year my folks thought it'd be a great idea to hand out stationery. Not all Christians hate the holiday...I stopped trick-or-treating when I got "too old" for it, and with no kids...well, a 24-year-old man going around would just be WEIRD. Besides. SugoiCon falls near then, so I'll likely be cosplaying. Last halloween I threw together a bunch of stuff and people thought I was Robin Hood.
