Are as follows, announced today:
Chichen Itza, Mexico
Taj Mahal, India
Machu Picchu, Peru
Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
The Colosseum, Italy
Petra, Jordan
Great Wall of China
......WHAT? What the heck is Christ the Redeemer doing there? The others I can understand (EDIT: I know what Petra is now, and it's pretty neat-o) but.....THAT? That's not a very amazing thing, if I say so myself. The Statue of Liberty has a better claim to being a "wonder" than that does, and I don't think Lady Liberty deserves to be on the list.
How about all of you? Any aggrements? Disagreements?
Well, with Christianity becoming so pervasive nowadays...
Personally I'm wondering how Petra managed to get on. Not very many people have heard of it (At least, not in my HS).
Well a lot of people have seen Petra since it was Indiana Jones...just they didn't know what it was. What does this have to do with Christianity? You have to admit, that is an impressive sight. It's over a 100 feet tall and sits on a 2200 foot tall hill.
They took off the Pyramids?
What the f*ck?
Quote:
The pyramids of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, were assured of retaining their status in addition to the new seven after indignant Egyptian officials said it was a disgrace they had to compete.
So then, what? Eight wonders?
I find it quite odd Stonehenge didn't make the cut.
The pyramids at Giza're still Wonders, guys - still Wonders of the Ancient World.
There's a reason why these're the New 7 Wonders - they aren't replacing anything - just updating since the last one was drawn up, and recognising that things happened in places other than Europe, and six of the Ancient Wonders aren't even standing.
Bear in mind, Psx, that Stonehenge has only been in its current formation since 1903, when the Edwardians decided to put a pile of stones that'd fallen over into a prettier formation.
I think that it's of limited appeal outside the UK, which is why it's been left off the list but it's another monument that I don't think deserves to be there. It's not stood the test of time like something like the Taj.
I'd almost but the Gates of Babylon on there actually. There was another Islamic structure that was quite impressive but I can't remember what it was...
EDIT: Wait, never mind. The Hagia Sophia didn't make the final cut.
Oh and it isn't an Islamic structure, my mistake.
It's an easy mistake Tornadot, it's been an Islamic structure for all intents and purposes. It hasn't been since back before Istanbul was Constantinople.
Let the record show that I will go into a TMBG song at the drop of a hat.
Honestly, I have such difficulty taking this seriously, because the thing is so tinged with nationalism. Countries that got excited with the list got on it, and countries that weren't excited about it did not. One of the articles I read said the Jordanian government actively encouraged its citizens to vote.
I'm surprised that the great blue hole of Belize didn't make the cut... that thing is totally awesome. Although it's not man made.
Angkor-Watt really, really should have been voted in.
I think this is more or less fair. Although I agree with Cooki, the Christ statue seems the least interesting one of the lot.
Machu Pichu (did I spell that right?) is my favorite! What I heard is that the Peruvians weren't too happy about the added interest, apperantly there is a limit to how many people can see it at a time. (Hi, Xag!)
