This poll seems to still be alive; I voted. So if you would kindly steer right past every choice but Sailor Moon and vote for a "Sailor Moon Redub" by Funimation, I'm sure a very large number of people would appreciate it if Funimation chooses to actually REDUB SAILOR MOON YAY.

For the record, Sailor Moon is awesome and was never given a legitimate dub; there is an entire website dedicated to that.

Wait...I thought the Sailormoon we saw was the dubbed version. Define "legitimate", btw. lol

I thought the creator lady of Sailor Moon was so livid with the way the world treated her franchise, she removed all existing licenses and it's now impossible to buy or watch Sailor Moon anywhere outside of Eastern Asia.

Do Funimation have a weapon to undo her wrath?

lol, curious... I watched the first dubed episode... Holy crap thick canadian accents D: "Mall" turned into "MAUUUUUUUUUUUULL"... lol

I also watched the promo for the unaired/developed American version of the show, complete with live action/cartoon mix...

I've never watched the series before, but given a decent dub, I'd give it a shot.

I thought that Naoko Takeuchi withdrew the licence on the grounds that she was trying to put all of the marketing and publicity weight behind the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon live action series, rather than any particular outrage at the terrible English dubbing?

Either way, even if the rights could be recovered, the political climate's probably deteriorated even from what it was when the original dubs were made. The cuts that were made won't be reinstated because it'll still be seen as a show for kiddies and there're certain things in there that the soccer moms in the Bible belt don't want little Mary-Kate and Jimmy seeing. The original incarnations of the franchise're still very much in people's consciousness, so it's not as though its dumbed down version would be easy to put aside and break away from as far as marketing goes.

There might even be more cuts than the show had originally, and the fifth series still wouldn't get touched with a ten foot pole.

I don't know the specifics at all. My research yielded no results as to why this all happened, but the facts of what has happened seemed pretty final:

Online petitions requesting the dubbing of Sailor Stars have been held since 2000. It has been confirmed that Sailor Stars, the final season of the Sailor Moon anime, will not be dubbed, because Toei is not putting it up for license. The manga is expected to remain out-of-print as well, although TokyoPop is looking into renegotiating the rights. On May 5, AnimeonDVD reported from Anime Central 2007 that "Toei currently has a lockdown on all Sailor Moon licenses, but Geneon expressed interest in case the situation changed. However, Geneon was merged with Universal Studios in February 2009. Similarly, Madman Entertainment was forced to stop print of all the Sailor Moon DVD licenses it acquired, despite the R4 DVD releases being very successful. Madman Entertainment still has interest in re-licensing the series from Toei and re-releasing it.[citation needed] Toei has also stated that it does not ever intend to license its recent live-action series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, or the musicals, outside of Japan.

I guess some of them learned after dubbing companies turned cash cow series like One Piece into bombs.

They probably believe that it's worth not making short term profit to avoid giving their series a bad reputation. WHAT COMPANIES THAT CARE ABOUT THEIR LONG TERM SURVIVAL?! Their motives may even be artistic rather than economic, which is so refreshing but foreign to American corporate culture I could scream.

Pleeeeease. There is no reason NOT to vote.

Funimation created this poll. Funimation IS the dubbing company.

Also: Naoko/Toei wants money. That's all she wants for Sailor Moon. I am 100% convinced that this is at least 99.9% true and anything else you've heard is some fluff she forced out on command.

Also: A redub. Now why on Earth, would they "redub" Sailor Moon the same way? Also, what makes you think they would dub it for television? That Funimation website doesn't look like they do their work for TV. That excludes some crazy anime channel such as "The Funimation Channel".

ALSO: If you have seen the dub of Sailor Moon that we ALREADY HAVE, and you have no idea what the Japanese version is like, this redub could BLOW YOU AWAY. This sounds like a common thing to say about anime, but I don't give a crap about anime; in fact, everyone who complains about dubbed anime does so because they saw people who watched the original Sailor Moon talking about it and they wanted to be cool. Half of the pre-2000 internet was in fact written by Sailor Moon fans. Sailor Moon's dub IS the bad dub.

Please. omg. I need all of you to help get an actual dub of Sailor Moon in the works.

Usually If there is a dub version of an anime I'll watch both the dub and the original just for the heck of it. Maybe to catch differences. But I gotta tell ya I still thought Sailor Moon was hella stupid even with all its original content intact. I still can't believe I watched it every weekday morning when I was younger.

If there were like...a mini series or a condensed story version then I'd think it'd be ok. But to me Sailor Moon has way too many episodes. Its up there with Dragon Ball and Detective Conan, anime that I started watching, loving every bit of it and eventually just getting bored because no end is ever in sight. Not to say that there aren't any longer anime of course. It's just...ugh. Stand alone episodes in this context make me nauseous over time. Kind of like the hated months long filler arc of Naruto.

I would love to see an accurate sailor moon dub/re-dub, But I also would'nt mind seeing some of the Origional VA's Reprising there roles. Lets hope funi can get the creater to quite being so stingy with international distribution of the series.

I remember watching Sailor Moon a couple of times. Don't really remember if it was any good. I was actually looking for the DVD a few days ago.
I guess I'll support the redub.

Gotta love the homosexuality in the original Japanese version.

from what I remember the VA's from the first dub weren't bad. It was probably just the script that was butchered.

Chibi should not sound like she is on helium.

Though I hate to admit, with few exceptions, nailing Usagi with a Valley Girl California Blonde Chick voice fit her VERY well.

Other than that, lame city, population: English Dub.

Sad thing is that Stephine Beard (Chibi on the later seasons) sounds like that in real life. :/

You say that as if most younger female anime characters' VAs don't sound like they are on helium to start with in the Japanese version.

Agreed. Chibi's English voice is nothing compared to how high some Japanese VA's can get. Some of them could probably break glass.

Cream from Sonic X anyone? Make's Rini sound like Dr. Girlfriend by comparison. Actually Rini's voice never bothered me.

unless you're talking about that other character called Chibi Chibi...wait did the dub make it that far? Arg now I'm confused!

They don't? They're normally high pitched or sound like... girls? When they sound whiney and full of helium, though, it sounds a little better in Japanese, mostly since we don't speak the language. So it sounds right. In English, it just doesn't fit. At all.

I wish Funimation would go ahead and decide what they want to do with the rest of the Hellsing Ultimate OVAs. I want my V and VI.

I hear ya, Hellsing is a cool show, but Funimation is just one company, the have the rights to what, 150 anime series already, if you count the Genon saves.

Im sure Funi might save more Genon stuff in the future (Im hoping for a rerelease of the Lupin & Trigun Series myself)

but yea there a big company but they can't dub everything, brining an show to the US cost money & in this economy I guess you can't blame them for being weary & sticking mostly to Shonen action & Fanservice shows, cause for better or worse, thats what sells. (although the fanservice shows are just getting disturbing...one reason I don't watch ecchi.)

but back on Topic I do hope funi seriously considers a Re-release/Redub of SM for hte U.S. but I don't think there interested in old anime if it isnt DBZ, I mean they havn't even gotten Dr.Slump (another Toryama classic) Yet. so I don't think we will see a SM rerelease for awhile.

A Sailor Moon topic and I was unaware of it!? Man I need to visit more often! D:

Anyhoo...it's really a variety of reasons why SM's not been renewed. A lot of it is because Naoko was burned by Cloverway (who had a hand in all four seasons) AND Mixxzine (who apparently treated her terribly when she came to San Diego in 1998 - hence it is likely that is why Tokyopop didn't start renegotiating new rights until the CEOs who were involved with that debacle were kicked out, back in 2008). It wasn't just the money, it's the fact there's no guarantee she and her license won't be treated like crap over here (because let's face it, she is filthy stinking rich and even if she wasn't, she has a filthy stinking rich husband who takes care of her and her son, so she doesn't actually need money). Funimation is certainly trying, and I did talk to their guy at Otakon; he explained that was one of the major reasons why they were trying really, really hard to not let the license go back to the US just yet.

There's also another reason which might actually be advantageous to us: this. On top of re-releasing the entire series remastered, there is apparently a huge gathering on December fifth with the original five voice actresses for the first time publicly in years, and traditionally, December is usually when the companies in Japan announce new shows, particularly animes...given it's still two years before the actual anniversary of either the manga or anime, the timing seems miiiighty fishy. Or maybe I'm the type of optimist who has to cross their fingers on this one. We'll see.
