Yay, I <3 DT, or Dream Theater for those who don't know, a Prog Metal band (Prog rock never appealed to me that much, but Prog Metal is something I can get into =D ).

It was leaked a while back, but now its officially out. While I don't have the cash to buy the album... I've been listening to it on youtube, and, while definetely no "Train of Thought" or "Images and Words" (Their two best albums, tbqh), its still fairly good. 7/10, worth listening to to me, better than Systematic Chaos, though Portnoy needs to shut the hell up, he isn't meant to sing, leave that to La Brie.

Oh and they also have a few cover songs on the album, namely "Stargazer" by Rainbow, "Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley" by Queen, "Odyssey" by Dixie Dregs, "Take your fingers from my Hair" by Zebra, "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II" by King Crimson, and last but not least "To Tame a Land" by Iron Maiden (As much as I like DT and absolutely love Iron Maiden, I thought they could of covered something better... well, I would have loved if they covered some of their recent stuff, its actually kinda progy, or maybe something from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, despite it being made by Maiden, its basically a prog metal album...)

Your thoughts on any other DT fans here or anyone else who has heard the album?

Also, they lyrics to "The Count of Tuscany" are wtf material

In short, I love it. I'd put it right behind Images And Words and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence as my favorite album by them.

A Nightmare To Remember
- Loved it after the first listen. The drums are epic. The melodies are epic. I like when Jordan comes crashing in with the main melodies. The middle section (that "beautiful agony" part) is absolutely fantastic. Only problem is Mike's vocal part near the end. Something about giving us good news in the most brutal way possible and then BAHHHHing is just...hmmm.

A Rite Of Passage - It's alright. Sounds too much like "In The Name Of God" to me, and I rather dislike the macho voice James puts on at the start and Jordan's Mega Man music solo near the end. Great chorus, though.

Wither - Great short song. It's definitely a grower, but when it does grow on you, it's fantastic.

The Shattered Fortress
- I'm mixed. In the context of the suite as a whole, it works, but it seems to be going "Hey! Remember this part from Repentance?! And this part from The Glass Prison?! And... etc." too much. I like hearing them again, but it's a bit too much and they don't really segue into each other that well. On the other hand I love The Glass Prison's melody finishing it off. I'd never let a person new to Dream Theater near this song, though, because without having heard the other four first, this song comes off as rather messy.

The Best Of Times - Like it. The beginning sounds like Rush. Maybe it is because I can't relate to the lyrics that the song doesn't really stand out to me, but there is nothing "wrong" with the song, and I like it regardless.

The Count Of Tuscany - Best song on the album. Hands down. I love all three sections. The fast, epic beginning, the ambient middle, and that gorgeous acoustic closer. The only downside is that the lyrics are a bit nonsensical. What's this about brothers and cellars and the sounds of a nearby creek? What the hell is Petrucci talking about?!

Still need to give the covers disc a full listen, as I've only heard the cover of Stargazer. Oh, and...

"LET ME INTRODUCE: MAH BRUTHUH!!!"

Its alright, but I've seen better from them, hence the 7/10 rating. Train of Thought is the most "Metal" of their albums, so its probably why its my favorite by them.

However, I've only given it a couple of spins, I'm sure this album will grow on me a bit more as time goes on (I'm that kind of person), but I'm glad to see someone else who knows about DT.

Now, just need the next Iron Maiden album to be freaking epic beyond belief... though their last one was pretty sweet >>

My friend introduced me to their stuff when Systematic Chaos was released. Now the majority of my iTunes library is prog rock/metal music.

I've always leaned more towards the rock aspect of DT, but I love almost everything they've put out including the metal aspect. Six Degrees is my favorite because the first disc is like a wonderful experimentation in what sounds the band can play with, and The Glass Prison is one of the coolest album openers ever imo.

They seem to be getting more popular recently. They've got songs on Rock Band now and I saw a commercial for the new album on Adult Swim last night. It's just a shame that so many people seem to be turned off by James LaBrie's voice.

I'm more of a metalhead, hence why I prefer their metalish material, first band that got me into metal was Iron Maiden, and they're still my favorite band >>

I find it shameful they tend to get a lot of internet hate (Several forums I go to consider it crap ) But still, I like DT. Not in my top 5 bands, but they still get a decent amount of listening.

The only thing about DT that ever gets under my skin is how almost every song this decade seems to feel the need to go on an endless tirade guitar/keyboard twiddly-twanging. It's disrupted the flow of several songs before, like it seems to do in the second half of A Rite Of Passage.

I like what I've heard from Iron Maiden, never really had the money to explore their discography though.

Well, yeah, they do go on a bit with some guitar wankery, but I kinda like it, most bands that do that make their music terrible, but they seem to be able to pull if off.

And about IM, you can pretty much find any song you want on youtube, but if you ever get the cash, albums you should get by them in following order (I'm assuming you'll like their more prog stuff more than anything)

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - OH MY GOD. Its a perfect 10/10 album, their only concept album (Though BNW and AMoLaD are borderline concept albums...) and fairly proggy (Still more metal than anything but you'll definately feel the prog in it), and well... ITS JUST *ING PERFECT.

Powerslave - Not all that proggy, more straight 80's Heavy Metal type album, but for what it does, its also a 10/10, with a perfect blend of power, emotion and magic (The various songs are about the Battle of Britain, The Cold War with references to the doomsday clock, Fighting Dragons and Swordplay, Corrupt Egyption Pharoahs who stand as an allegory for the music industry, and a metal adaption of a certain poem called "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", maybe you've heard of it =P) all done in a single album.

Brave New World - Their 2000 comeback album (Their singer and guitarist rejoined the band after they both left several years ago, and as a result, led to some less than stellar 90's albums...) features an excellent blend of fast paced aggressive rocker type songs and more progressive, intellectual material (The album is based off the book by Huxely, and so is the title track and several others make references to the book itself), and showcases that just because they are old, doesn't mean that they can't make music. My favorite Maiden album by far, it perfectly illistrates their old school headbanging metal style they did in the 80's going alongside more progressive material, showcasing they can do both, and do them well, also a 10/10.
Also, "Blood Brothers" solo late in the song is so *ing beautiful, it makes me tear up every time I listen to it.

Dance of Death - Not a perfect album, but still great, a 9/10 imo, coming out just after BNW in 2003, is a bit more proggy than BNW (But that's mostly due to them getting older, its expected), its just one song on there that keeps this from being a 10/10 album (New Frontier... ). Also has THE MOST FREAKING EPIC WAR SONG EVER. Paschendale, YOU MUST *ING HEAR IT. Seriously, the 8 minute epic about the battle of WWI that is like, iirc, the bloodiest battle ever I think. Its just all too powerful.

A Matter of Life and Death - Their most recent album (That is, until their next expected one comes out, which is set to be early next year or something...) back in 2006, is a grower album. You're not gonna like it the first time you hear it, I didn't either. Now, this album is in my top 5 albums by Maiden when it was at the bottom before. Every song is about war or religon in some form, and feels rather depressing, but that is to represent the overarching theme that war is simply put, the worst creation that mankind has ever come up with. Also, "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" is easily the best song, you have to hear it. YOUTUBE. NAO.

The Number of the Beast - The album that got a lot of media attention for its suggestive cover (It had their mascot eddie controlling Satan by puppet strings :P), but the album doesn't support Satanism unlike some stuck up right wing christians will have you believe (The title track is about a terrible nightmare dealing with someone dreaming about satanism). Also, it features what I can only describe as the metal version of "Stairway to Heaven" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Yes, its that *ing epic), "Hallowed Be Thy Name", which in my opinion, IS THE BEST SONG EVER ****ING MADE! Its not a 10/10 though, despite having the greatest song on the planet, for there contains a bit of filler contents (A few songs I don't really care for that much), but other than that, get it. You won't regret it!!!

There are others, but those are the ESSENTIAL!!11!1

Yes, I'm a huge Iron Maiden fanboy and completely derailed my own thread, thank you for noticing 😛
