I watched Sherlock Holmes twice
Very fun movie
Serenity... although that said it should be know that before watching Serenity at 11:00pm on a Monday night, my buddy and I had been watching the COMPLETE series of Firefly... beginning at 10am. A days worth of pure FILLION. My brain feels like mush now, but in the good way. This was the first time I had seen either on Blu Ray and I must say they were beautiful. Firefly remains a great series, even after the 4th time through. By far the best Drama/Sci-Fi/Western series I've ever seen. Great characters, great story telling (complete with little hints scattered throughout about upcoming plots). If you haven't seen it, go out now and watch it. Shame that Fox had to muck up the broadcast order

Hahah! D00d! My roommates and I so had a Firefly/Serenity two month long marathon last August/Sept. Super fantastic, stuff. Truly a classic.
As for me...I finall saw Star Trek['09] like...two nights ago. Absolutely amazing. The references made me cry.
Saw Men Who Stare At Goats. Hilarious movie. I'm a Star Wars nut, so I got a chuckle every time Ewan McGregor pretended (Unconvincingly!) to not know what it was. The one point that had the entire theater in hysterics was the IED.
Just saw the Book of Eli. Very incredible; the desolate setting and time makes the film's uplifting message stick with you that much more.
Also, Denzel is a certifiable BADASS (especially after The Twist at the end).
Watched Avatar in 3D on Friday, as that was the recommended way to do it.
Great visuals, lame story is what they said.
And yes, the visuals are awesome, and the plot is old hat, but it's very well told, and the acting is very good, both by the real and animated cast.
What I didn't like about it was the highly recommended 3D. I'm not entirely sure of what it added over and it felt like a distraction when used. Maybe I was too clost to the screen but quite frankly I found it hard to really take everything in. The glasses also gave me a whopping headache that lasted the rest of the day.
So overall, I enjoyed Avatar for all the wrong reasons, I really like the characters and world, the animals looked like realistic Pokemon (not really a bad thing imo), and the story, while familiar, was well told.
I actually think I would've enjoyed it more with shorter action sequences too, they took up more time than needed and didn't really feel as tense as they could have.
I may watch it again, but in 2D next time.
I finally got around to watching Ghost in the Shell
It was cool and all, but like... nothing happened.
xD! @ HPA! Silly, silly. Anyway...I saw Up In The Air Saturday night. Movie was wonderful. Kinda depressing for awhile, actually.
Up.
Damm you Pixar and your ability to make me cry!
Today I saw Inglorious Basterds and Hot Fuzz (Nostalgia Critic's recommendation on that last one). Basterds was talky but very good, and Hot Fuzz was just fun.
Last night I rewatched a favourite of mine, Drunken Master.
While it's not a great sotry, nor Jackie Chan's best for action, I just love the characters and comedy. It's light hearted and fun, and it inspired Dragon Ball's sense of humour!
Tonight I watched Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, one I'd never watched before, and loved to bits. Sooooo much fun, and an awesome ending.
Up.
Damm you Pixar and your ability to make me cry!
Just watched that one today.
I have no idea why any other American animation company (2d, cg, whatever) even tries to compete with Pixar anymore. Pixar is untouchable at this point in the realm of quality.
Coraline last night. As one ought to expect from Neil Gaiman, a fair amount of nightmare fuel. My friends and I were unable to reach a conclusion as to whether a man made entirely out of rats was creepier than demon children with sacks over their heads in The Orphanage.

wow someone else watches oldies, i was feeling down and watched "earth girls are easy" earlier today.
but bill and ted.. that brings back memories, i remember watching a preview for it when i was a kid on "games watch" a video game show..... hey wasnt it released at the same year as sonic?
.. maybe sonic 2...i think.
anyway "earth girls are easy" was really fun, i love the music the 3 aliens make... also the beach scene was legendary.
Just watched Whip It last night. Ms Barrymore's directorial debut was actually really good. Probably helps that I have a crush on Ellen Page...
EDIT: Looks like no one has watched anything in a while =|
I just finished Halo Legends... not impressed. Lackluster stories with extremely scattered animation. Honestly the only good thing is I didn't pay for it.
I FINALLY watched Avatar. I've been wanting to see it for some time but haven't got the chance to. I heard the main criticism (Weak plot) and while I saw that it was a weak story, it was still nicely told. The messages may have been a little heavy handed but I've learned to filter that stuff out. The movie is GORGEOUS. Drop dead gorgeous. Outside of the company vehicles which looked like copters on steroids, the rest of it was eye candy. I would have been quite happy with more scenes of Jake exploring more of the planet in general because it seems they only focused on a certain area when there is SO much more they could have seen. Guess that's for the sequel. The music is also very well done and I must own the soundtrack to it.
So greatest movie of all time like some claim? Nah but I liked it very much all the same...so I guess I am drinking the Avatar koolaid.
Those visuals...<3 <3 <3
The music...<3 <3 <3
The last movie I watched was The Spirit, which I just got on DVD. The last movie I watched at the cinema was Avatar in 3D for the second time. And the last new movie I watched was Sherlock Holmes at the cinema.
I bought quite a few inexpensive DVD's recently, so I imagine I shall be enjoying a few more films soon, though I am a little busy watching Smallville on DVD.
I actually haven't watched anything recently but I want to watch a Hiyazaki film just to see why people love them...I just don't know which one to watch.
You mean Hayao Miyazaki? Hm. My first was Spirited Away, and it's fantastic, but one with a more standard story might make a better introduction. Like Porco Rosso, or Laputa. They're all incredible (though personally I found Ponyo to be a bit weak, beautiful as it was).
Speaking of Ponyo, I notice it was CGI-free, completely hand animated. That's one thing that bugged me about Princess and the Frog: all the CGI. It kinda makes all the colorful fluidly-animated characters seem out of place, Who Framed Roger Rabbit style. But beside that, yes, PRINCESS AND THE FROG WAS AWESOME SEE IT NOW.
ha ha ha my oh my turtle, you been praising princess and the frog for so long its a crime you aint getting paid by disney for that effort.
and i agree with you about the CG mixed with 2D animation looking kinda off. it gets to me too. those worlds shouldn't mix.
as for the last movie i saw.. i know its been out some time, but i just watched "The Challenging" and is that movie awsome or what? its depressing a bit but the ending makes you cheer and clap.
although i wont watch it again, it had really upsetting scenes.
Watched Kick Ass today.
It's awesome. Watch it.
If you need a convincer then consider this; Nicolas Cage is one of the most likeble characters in the movie, especially if you love Batman, but even when he's not as Big Daddy I thought he was great fun. A rare thing for Nicolas to do with me, hope he keeps it up.
it does look good robo, i saw the trailer so thanks for the recommendation. i'll surely look for it.
Currently watching The Last Samurai on FX. Pretty much my favorite movie. Always love catching it on tv. I usually get stuck watching it and forgetting what I was currently doing. lol

Any mid-80's to present 2D Disney feature and has some degree of CG. There's some experimenting with it in Black Cauldron, Great Mouse Detective, Oliver and Company, and The Little Mermaid; and it started getting heavy usage starting with The Rescuers Down Under. Look at the Cave of Wonders in Aladdin, the Hydra in Hercules, a bunch of things in Tarzan...the list goes on. I think it's most obvious in Treasure Planet. In fact, the stampede scenes in The Lion King and Mulan barely would've been possible without CG.
The only problem I had with The Frog Princess was that there wasn't much background info on the villain, and the prince seemed to fall into his grasp a bit too soon.
On topic: Where the Wild Things Are is now one of my favorite movies ever.
EDIT: Speaking of which, if you look on YouTube, you should find a hand-drawn/CG animation test made by John Lasseter back in the early 80's of a proposed Wild Things movie.
Well, sure, the other films used it, like the ballroom scene in Beast, etc., but there were times in Frog where the only thing hand-drawn in the entire frame is the character, and, for example, her entire room is CGI. It seemed awkward to me.
Finally got round to Alice in Wonderland. I really enjoyed it, although I couldn't believe I'd failed to recognise Babs Windsor's voice. I *did* manage to spot Alan Rickman & Stephen Fry at least. Lord Ascot I couldn't picture, but I'd known he'd done loads of narration (including a piece for the Natural World about the Grand Canyon) - should have known it was Tim Piggott-Smith!
I think the Hatter and the Cheshire Cat were my favourite characters - but then I'm pretty sure they were for me in Disney's original.
Question though - I've only read Through the Looking Glass, but what elements were actually from that novel? Am I right in thinking the Jabberwocky was in that, not in Alice? And the chessboard, possibly. Anything else?
Oh, and guys, Jabberwocky is the name of the poem. Jabberwock is the name of the creature. Tsk, tsk.
'Twas brillig and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe
All mimsey were the borogroves
And the momeraths outgrabe...

Well, the original Alice animated film was basically Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with it's less memorable parts replaced haphazardly with bits from Looking Glass. If you're interested, the entire text of the first book (and the second, somewhere) is available free online via Project Gutenburg here.
Just saw Kick-Ass and I thought it was, well, kick-ass. Go watch it.
(Recalls trailer for the movie I just saw.)
A movie that will show you what people are like. A movie that will teach you everything you need to know about life, about people, and about society. So, if your family is looking for a movie that will teach you about today's world, and even a little bit about yourself...
*Steve Martin pushes some old lady into an ocean.*
Then DO NOT see "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" .
Having temporarily run out of books to read, I had a bit of a movie marathon recently. Sunday was the day for "The Orphanage" and "Batman Begins". The former is a creepy Spanish horror film (sort of), the latter I'm guessing you know the plot
Monday night was "The Dark Knight", followed by a text to a friend asking when the next Batman movie was due out. I'm hoping no Spiderman 3 syndrome...
DW
Yes Pach kick-ass is kick-ass. The Scott Pilgrim trailer was enough to go to the movie. Hearing the "ooOoos" and the "Ahhhhs!" from the people in the crowd was great. But kick-ass was so so good. In so many ways. I feel like Dave alot actually. =/ Maybe I should...
Just watched Highlander: The Search for Vengeance, the anime movie released a few years ago by the director behing Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and boy does it show.
The visuals in this movie is nothing short of gorgeous, smooth as silk animation, awesome character designs, fantastic art, it's worth watching just to see it in motion. The voice acting is pretty good too, I don't recall any instances being bad, though there wasn't much too memorable. Same can be said for the music really, it's biggest sin being the lack of a Queen based soundtrack.
The story follows the titular immortal Highlander, Colin MacLeod (yes, another one), on his 2000 year long quest for vengeance, if the title didn't tip you off already, for the death of his wife at the hands of the antagonist Roman emporer and fellow immortal Marcus Octavius. The bulk of the story is set in a post apocolyptic New York in which Marcus rules and Colin is a bounty hunter. The city has a virus that kills anyone who stays outside too long, and the vaccine is held only for those subserviant to Marcus, while the rest of the citizens are forced to live in slums underground, where our hero winds up.
Colin's history with Marcus is told through flashbacks, much like the original movie with Connor MacLeod. However, this new Highlander is a very different character, uncaring, cold, focused on the one thing giving him purpose. Marcus himself is also very different to Victor Kruger, instead of a brutish warlord he's a well mannered, graceful and artistic individual, with more political goals in mind and much less focused on being The One.
If you love good animation and/or Highlander then pick this up, if you haven't watched much in either then I recomend watching the original movie and Ninja Scroll or Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust first, all are better but this is a great place in between them all.
What's more, it's the best piece of media I've seen since the original movie to bare the Highlander name.
AIRPLANE!
Most. Hilarious. Movie. Ever.
Airplane. That standard to which all comedy is forever held, lol.
Saw Alice. Hiilarious. I'm learning that Johnny Depp dance. If only my neck would stop hurting from turning so much....
Im sure its alot easier than the dance shown in your signature.
IFC played "Howl's Moving Castle" the other day! I freaking love that movie!!! Other than that...well not much of nothing. I wathced Dragonball Evolution to about the halfway point when I decided it was crap and moved on to something else!
I just got Netflix. :3 Yeah, expect a deluge.
So far, I've watched:
Labyrinth: I've seen parts of this but I've never seen the whole thing before. Beautiful movie. Bowie is awesome every time he appears, and several of the puppet scenes are astounding (the Helping Hands sequence stands out most to me).
Of Mice and Men (1994): I've seen this before, in class, after having to have read the book. This near-perfect adaptation is just great, from the acting (Sinise is incredible as George, and as director) to the sets to the music.
Plan 9 from Outer Space!: There aren't many gags left that I haven't seen on Youtube, etc, but the movie itself is still hilariously bad. The Criswell part at the beginning is priceless.
Lakeview Terrace: You don't f**k with Sam L Jackson, man. Especially when he's a crazy racist patrolman. I don't care if you're a superhero from an alternate 1985; just don't cross him!
Rashômon: I dunno how many of you have heard of this Japanese 1950 masterpiece, but it really is a sight to behold. It involves a relatively simple crime. A bandit, a samurai, and his wife meet in the woods. The wife is raped by the bandit, the samurai is murdered, and the bandit runs away. But who can say what really happened? Certainly not the EYE-WITNESSES. As more testimonies come to light as to what happened that day, it becomes more and more confusing as each testimony is completely different from the last. Each story tells us more about the person telling his or her side than what actually happened, and it leaves us questioning what the true meaning of truth is, and if we can ever really objectify a instant. Great performances, particularly from the bandit, who appears as very different men in the flashbacks, like a brave rogue, a inhuman animal, or a sniveling coward, depending on the speaker. It's a classic.
Also, has anyone ever seen Hoodwinked? Its story structure is largely a Rashomon homage. They even say so in the (hilarious) commentary.
Hoodwinked, the animated movie? The Red Riding Hood rip?
Yessir.
Kick-Ass... twice. One of the best movies, comic-related or not, I've seen. It wasn't as funny as most would expect, but being a fan of the comic, this is one of the most genuine & faithful movies (to the source material) I've ever seen.
&& The Scott Pilgrim trailer was bosssssss!
Transformers 2 on Sunday night was the accompaniment to my ironing. I particularly liked how Starscream's engines vibrated the floor thanks to the surround sound A chance to drool over Bumblebee & Sideswipe and wonder when Ironhide got British (good old Jess Harnell wasn't imitating Liverpudlian this time, though).
DW
Heh, just wathced The Good Son on FMC. It's not my favorite, but it's quite enojoyable if only to see the Home Alone kid act evil!
Watch the original version of Star Wars (A New Hope, though that title isn't in the original release). It was awesome, now for the sequels!
oh no you're getting that star wars fever! in a few days you'll be hunting down star wars video games and action figures.
i watched an old movie today called "ghosts of mars" it was interesting it reminds me of road warrior. i liked it though cause of ice cube, he's such a fun person even if he doesnt smile
Watch the original version of Star Wars (A New Hope, though that title isn't in the original release). It was awesome, now for the sequels!
LOL, I just watched it on Sunday as well . Such a great movie. Of course, I watched the original theatrical release. Damn Lucas and his meddling with the original trilogy =|
Han shoots first. End of.
Even if it means I have to watch in stereo, not surround.
Shrek 2 on BBC3 the other night. Gotta love Jennifer Saunders' cover of Holding Out for a Hero, although what was Bowie thinking when he joined in that godawful cover of Changes?
DW
Watched one of my all time favorite movies today, The Big Lebowski. Honestly, one of the funniest, quirkiest, and random films around, love every minute of it!
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Was it good?
Yes.
Iron Man 2.
Twice.
It's awesome!
Side note: Really looking forward to Thor, there aren't enough capes in my Marvel movies.
Kind of thrown off a little by the bizarreness and the plot but Spirited Away is so great. 2 hours well spent...I'd gush but that might go on too long....so yea, great film. Dunno why it took me so long to watch it.
