Hahaha! Dude...that trailer totally rocked my socks. Can't wait for that. I was like suffering from convulsions in my seat when that trailer popped up. lol Next year is going to be good, not quite as good as this year, but better than '07. Watchmen, Transformers[hopefully], and that's really all that matters. lol I think Wolverine is slated for next year too.
I never read the book, I'll try to avoid it until after I see the movie so I won't be all like "OMFG THEY RUINED IT" the entire time
I saw this trailer the other day and I must say this movie looks very good. Especially Dr. Manhattan, they pulled him off quite well I reckon. Whether the quality of the writing and story will live up to the original is another matter, but from the few interviews and things I've read from the director he seems to be a big enough fan of the source material to have a good ol' stab at keeping it faithful. I enjoyed Sin City and 300 at any rate, so if nothing else he should be able to make a fun movie out of it, although I hadn't read either of those before I saw the film (and haven't since) so I can't really say how faithful of adaptations those were.
Funnily enough this is perfect timing (or possibly the worst timing depending on how it goes) for a Watchmen movie for me, since I only just read the book (courtesy of a very generous friend lending it to me) and so it should still be pretty fresh in my mind when I come to read it.
People who make Watches!
But Seriously this movie will rock, I read the GN & it was great, some people say its dated but i don't think so, This movie will be just as good as Dark Knight, Belive it!
This trailer looked great on the IMAX screen and this is one movie I will need to see in IMAX. I do, however, think I should read the graphic novel first.
I disagree with it being the perfect time for this movie. With The Incredibles and Heroes both out and insanely popular, ignorant fools who don't realise that the book is the inspiration for all superhero stuff for the past 20 years, would assume it a rip-off.
I mean both Incredibles and Heroes ripped off Watchmen so bad that both the intro plot and the ultimate ending plot have both been done recently and well.
I'm actually scared of the public's reaction to this movie.
Funnily enough this is perfect timing ... for me
;P
I see what you're saying though. Most of the people who's opinions I've heard elsewhere seem to think this is good timing for a Watchmen movie, given the whole thing of it being a deconstruction of the superhero comic book genre and with all the superhero films we've seen in recent years a Watchmen movie (if done right) could be to superhero movies what the original book was to superhero comics. Never thought of it the way you put it (then again I still haven't caught back up to Heroes from where I originally left on in the middle of season one).
Nuch. You just quoted yourself and had a discussion with yourself. I think you may be scizophreniac.
I was using my quote to illustrate my response to Craig.
Trailer looked really really good. I haven't read the GN and I'll probably check it out before I see this, but either way, I'm definitely gonna see this.
I read the novel the other day. I cried MAN TEARS.
New trailer.
Finally, a trailer where we can hear them speak!
I'm really glad that Rorshach's mask does not move, as in the book. Also, his voice is really cool. I love him to bits <3
Rorshach's voice is just how I imagined it. *Shorp chlop lop* Got any more beans?
As a person who read the plot online but hasn't read the original, I have to say that, if this were a new franchise I knew nothing about, that trailer would just make me think it was going overboard on the dark and anti-heroics just for the dark and anti-heroics.
I'm...sadly...not convinced. oO; Nothing in the trailer looks like it's actually anything BUT what it's not meant to - a cheap-imitation Superhero flick using charicature-styles of established hero's such as Superman and the like. It may be the original Superhero novel made into cinema, but in all honesty I see nothing in there that 'Grips' me as essential viewing - let alone I see the costumes and just...wince...at how bad/cheap/Off-key they appear to be.
Since I've never heard of this book, however, I'll leave this one alone!
They are supposed to be superhero caricatures, but yeah, this isn't going to expand the audience beyond the established fan base unless they make the marketing better.
Your clearly not a big enough nerd if you don't know the Watchmen. I think the one thing we can all agree on is that the GN is one of (if not the) greatest comics ever made.
Springheart and Vec, both your replies confirmed my darkest fears, mentioned in post #6.
The movie is being released far into the superhero hype and on the tail of everything that has ripped it off.
Batman is only the dark and brooding figure he is today BECAUSE this graphic novel existed. I don't think you guys fully grasp the social significance of Watchmen. It, and Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, are the reason why the comic industry is how it is now.
That's not an over simplification or an exaggeration of sorts. That's outright fact. During the abysmal 90's and the not as bad, but getting worse, new millenium, the entire comic industry has been running on under a banner of "Grim and Gritty" and piling on the darkness.
Now, I feel that the effects are horrid and the world may be better off in a world without Watchmen... HOWEVER. I will hunt down anyone who says that it wasn't at least noteworthy. Good or bad is subjective and a matter of opinion. The fact that Watchmen is the yardstick of all superhero comics and perhaps superhero stories is just a fact. It is that significant.
If geekish peoples like us will see it as an exploitive hero movie, then the general public will have an even more ignorant opinion...
And that scares me.
I understand the significance, but sadly this film adaptation looks too much like a poor mans superman with lots of flashy and un-nameable superhero types that the public who won't have read the books will understand little of it's historical relevence. HOWEVER, this may also mean that the books will be hyped in bookstores, and comics written to go alongside it's release...after all, 50 Percent of a Superhero movie sales lie with the merchandising.
If this is the case here, then perhaps there will be a few who have been introduced to the book beforehand, or curious enough after the film to pick up a copy after leaving the cinema. The possibility DOES exist, after all. I have no doubt that the exec's who are planning the expected merchandise storm for the film may have planned for such an occasion, after all.
This trailer wins. And then Muse started playing and it WON EVEN HARDER.
Heard a rumor or two that Rorschach's dialog was dialed to be more "friendly". I really hope not. It may have been a last ditch attempt to gain the hallowed "PG-13" rating, though that appear to have fallen through.
