so yeah i voted for modern. idk why but 00 and code geass have just really enticed me. moreso than almost any other anime. i don't really like the bleach and naruto animes, but i enjoy the mangas of both of them.

Honestly, there isn't much difference in- OH IS THAT SUM DETECTIVE CONAN I SEE DAR?!?

...*Ahem* Much difference in anime from twenty years ago and now. They still have the same basic structure of plot, characters and length of episodes and arcs. I think that if there are differences it's either the animation style or that they are more "CLAMP" style characters in the current popular titles (Skinny proportions with long arms and legs. Geass I'm looks directly at you).

Personally I prefere CLASSIC anime more story, more mechs, less mindless Innuendo! But I admit i too love Gundam 00 & decently like Code Geass.

But I feel Older anime has more Soul to it.

Plus more Strong female characters in classic anime (& you know what i think about powerful women.) (also more respectable women as well)

Nowadays most anime babes are still hot, but most of em act like bubbleheads, succubi or strippers.

Thats why I love Norihiro Yagi's Claymore series, its Modern anime women done right, Sexy. Strong, smaryt, Deep Characterization & I don't care what the VIllagers say, Clares silver eyes are hypnitically beautiful.

Not to mention there were more mech anime back in the day as well...lol.

It's a difficult question to answer, this one, because there are so many aspects to consider.

I've found on occasion with more modern animé that the popularity may often hinge on the quality and style of the animation, rather than the plot.

With older series, it's the other way round, usually. I could think of several examples for both cases.

However, in the end on this occasion I've voted modern. Sole motivation for this was for those rare cases nowadays where not only is the animation awe-inspiring, the plot is as well. I have seen some examples.

...well OK, one other major reason too...

"WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!?"

I'm not much of an anime fan but, aside from Samurai Champloo, I can't think of a modern anime I've ever liked. My vote goes to classic.

I'm gonna have to go with classic. I mean, sure, I found a home with Naruto for a short while before it hit the US and spread like a virus that keeps mutating and just won't die. But otherwise, the only anime I found myself interested in were Sailor Moon (way back in the day) and Ah! My Goddess. Craig also introduced me to Slayers which I haven't actively picked up since he showed me a few months ago, but intrigued me enough to want to continue. And that's classic. Also, would .hack//SIGN fall under classic?

The exception right now seems to be Haruhi Suzumiya, but it seems to defy the conventions found in most anime these days and parody them mercilessly. Which is fine by me.

Is there a "they both suck" option?

I go with Modern simply because of Haruhi Suzumiya. Hell, that's the only modern anime show I watch. If I were to ignore my Suzumiya, my anime 'collection' is made entirely of Robotech, Gundam Wing, and DBZ (seasons 1 & 3 only)...

A question though is where do movies lie in this? Miyazaki's movies have always been great...

I like both classic anime and modern anime, but classic anime has a slight edge with me because of DB/DBZ, Gundam, Ranma 1/2, Tenchi and Hayao Miyazaki's movies. Yet modern anime lays claim to The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, which is insta-win. So, uh..... yeah!

You really should watch 'Black Lagoon'. The vast majority of the ass-kickers in it are female (although they aren't quite respectable, given that they're almost all thieves, pirates, assassins and mob bosses.) Although if you have virgin ears, you should probably not watch it. To say that "there's some foul language in Black Lagoon" is kinda like saying "there's some water in the ocean". But seriously, lotsa badass women in 'Black Lagoon'.

Anyways, I voted modern, because that's where all of my favorite shows except for one (Cowboy Bebop) happened. Although I'm not sure if One Piece would qualify as modern or classic, since it started in 1999.

One Piece would be Modern since the anime Started in y2k, the manga started in 99.

Personally I don't liek one piece that much, the story seems inconsetant & odd at times. & one other thing bothered me....Nami Magically goes from a b cup to Double D's over the course of the series...You can't change a persons physique (without a time skip) Just to get more people to like your series! its just wrong!

& No I don't have virgin ears, Language Doesn't bother me...Pretty Bishi SHojo boys & the Whorification of Modern anime women bother me!. & forgot about Black Lagoon....I agree, Strong Female Cast, & Who cares if there Pirates, I respect any women who Can still look sexy while kicking my ass. lol.

But Yea, Still Say Claymore is my fav modern anime!

& Again Choose Classic...Mainly because there were more GIANT ROBOTS! (LULZ!)

I like them both.

Though modern animes tend to have more fanservice...

...Not related to the fanservice thing, I AM a fan of Azumanga Daioh, even though the On Demand service I used to watch it with is gone... plus I like Great Teacher Onizuka, so I geuss I'll go with modern.

i didn't vote, as there was no option for those of us who like both classic AND recent anime. ^^ while some of the modern animes have really great animation, music and so forth.. many of the classics make up for it with storyline, plot and etc.

Are you saying Modern Anime DOESN'T HAVE GOOD PLOT STUFF?

Or are you saying that it does but Classics have it even moreso? O_o

Actually, now I think I like classic anime and modern anime equally as much. I can't really split them.

I personally don't think it makes much of a difference, as long as the writing, acting, and style is good. That goes for movies and American cartoons as well. Watching a load of Anime as a teenager gave me a lot of perspective on cliche's in storytelling and production as a whole, since most Anime is loaded with it. So over time, you just go for something with less crazy flashy backgrounds, the typical cute little kitten/alien creature that turns into a monster, the constant slapstick, and the typical, tragic back story that only some angsty teenager could relate to, and go for more style.

So most Anime in general, I can't watch anymore. I couldn't get into Bleach at all. I was getting into Naruto when I was 16, and it was still only in Japan. But by the time it hit the states, I then learned that it was one of those, "We're gonna go on and on and keep making episodes as long as it's making us money" TV shows. I prefer something where the beginning and end are pre-conceived. So I couldn't get into Naruto. And the constant headbands, and kids covered in Naruto merchandise was just too much for me.

Some of the more recent Anime I've gotten into were Trigun(though I don't know exactly how old that is) and Wolf's Rain. Older stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho was good simply for the fact that it was just SO cheesy, I couldn't help but be entertained in a good. Like a Bella Lugosi Dracula film. And believe it or not, but the first season, up until the first movie of Pokemon, I considered to be very good, and original for what it was. Like, I could still sit down and watch the Kanto saga and love every second of it. I know it' loaded with lots of Anime-style cliches, but I couldn't help but love it, and I still can't to this day. But I also feel that they needed to end that show a loooooooong time ago.

Welll Silv, I guess your right (although in all honesty US Animation This Decade has been Horrindus from a storytelling Viewpoint this decade) Probably beacuse most of the Writers from the 80's & 90's Retired. I also agree Pokemon should have ended long LOOONG! ago, but hey as long aas Nintendo can milk it, theyll make more eps....sadly.

& I can't say i know how old trigun is either, i wanna say it was made in 98. but im not 1000%, I know wolfs rain is modern though.

Overall I guess it all comes to perspecitve & taste.

Also Theres many anime I can't watch these days as well, im sorry but all this Ecchi & Moe stuff thats been popin up the past few years just aint my cup of tea....Im a man of Mech & shonen! (lol)
