Okay, here's the lowdown. In a week, I turn 21 and can legally drink. I asked my mom to prepare me a mixed drink for the occasion. Not that I'm thrilled about being able to drink...I'm just curious about the taste, ya know? So...unless I get another idea, I'm going with a Pina Colada. So this is where this thread comes in. I would like input as to what my birthday booze should be. Guidelines:
1) must be a mixed drink
2) must be sweet/fruity tasting. I've tried both sake and wine and couldn't stand either.
3) must not contain TOO much alcohol. A mixed tequila/vodka shot doesn't count. I'm looking for flavor, not getting hammered.
4) gimme a good reason. Gimme a desc of what it contains and how it tastes...I'm not gonna take "cuz it is teh best" as a reason.

If I was at the legal age to drink I'd answer. Don't you become an alcoholic now, Cy. 😀

Personally I'd say keep it simple like a 7/11 or a Jack n' Coke. Which are two easily and simple made mixed drinks. But hey that Pina sounds alright - and one question, how can you not stand wine?

Have you had bad wine or something?

Well, if you want a good drink I could suggest the 'Long Island Iced Tea', one friend told me it's fruity yet tangy. But becarful as it is an alcholic drink and you'll get hammered after 6 or 7. Maybe even less. Drinks NOT to try (unless you want too) are the 'Snake bite' and 'The Screwdriver' Now I know thats made by mixing teqila and vodka. A 'Bloody Mary' might also be good. But if you want to have a good drink, I can suggest one as I had this one on my 21st birthday. 'Buck's Fizz'. It's champange and orange juice. It's sparkly and friuty at the same time. Well, I hope my suggestions helped. Happy Birthday man.

Strawberry Daiquiri.

I can't give a reason, you just have to drink it and you'll know what I mean. All the other cocktails I know are ones I invented, so they might not be much help.

If it is, maybe you should try that.

Wait a second... you mean to say that you've virtually never drunk anything alcoholic before? It'll probably come as a bit of a shock to you then, because alcohol is an acquired taste unless you completely drown it in something sugary. Even cocktails still have that kick to them, so don't go expecting Jones Soda here.

My suggestion? Start with beer; a good craft lager or pale ale should do. I recommend Amstel or Rickard's Red. Only drinking cocktails is a bad habit to get into. Nothing screams unsophisticated like "I can't stand wine, but I'll have a rum and Coke". Learn to love it, or else.

Alcohol is something people should learn to drink when they're thirteen. The fact that Americans have to wait till they're 21 to do so legally fills me with pity, and the fact that anyone, American or not, actually complies with legal drinking ages makes me laugh.

ANYWAYS, even though I'm not as sophisticated as Cycle or as educated about alcohol as the Canadian people, I do drink quite a bit and I've figured out how to warm up to certain drinks.

Beer: try something imported first, American beer is very bitter and really not too good. It might take you awhile to warm up to any of it. If you don't like it, don't worry, more people then you think don't.

Wine: I guess I have a taste for wine. I didn't start drinking it regularly until I was in England last year and this year with Lee's family. Wine with Sunday dinner. White tastes better to be than red, but that's all just opinion. I wouldn't start out with wine if I was trying to an acquire a taste for alcohol. Each label and year of wine tastes a bit different, so it's sort of pointless to try to find one unless you plan on having it with food.

Shots: You don't want to get drunk, so I'll skip hard liquor. Alot of people go for Bailey's, Malibu Rum or flavored vodka if they don't want as much of a kick. All hard liquor is going to have a hard alcohol taste to it. Even mixed with a coke.

Mixed drinks: J-man's choice is probably the best for you. Pineapple isn't going to mask the booze taste as much as strawberry will. Long Island iced tea would be choice number 2.

Never meant it in that way. I was more going for indignation at legal drinking ages in general. We're pretty much in the same boat here; I'm a legal adult in a month and I still have to wait another year before I can go in a pub.I just feel sorry for people who have to wait even longer -- 19 is bad, 21 is just ridiculous.

I disagree; there are plenty of smaller operations in the States that make excellent beer. Miller, for example. It's just the North American industrial beers like Budweiser and Labatt's that reallly suck.

Miller is so pricey where I live that you might as well just go buy an imported beer. Bud Lite and Coors are cheap, but taste horrible. Of course, good old Natural Light is still like $7 for a twelve pack, a favorite of frat boys everywhere. It tastes like vomit.

In the United States, the drinking age is 21 to reduce the number of teens killed in car accidents as a result of drinking and driving.

However, many feel it should be 18, and many do start drinking once they go to college (18-19).

Hm, never been much of a drinker.

However, it wasn't the thread itself that made me post, but the topic title. The c and the l are conspiring to bring chaos to the Mofo by forming a single, rule-defying force. It's only purpose, to make me question Cy's gender...

Being 27, I'm allowed to answer this one.

Granted, I'm not a drinker. At parties, I only have wine coolers and those flavored Smirnoff's (and only one cuz they fill me up too fast). I'm in the same boat as you, cuz I can't stand the taste of alcohol, either, and masking it with a nice fruity taste makes it tolerable.

But I can suggest one drink outside of the malt liquor spectrum. It's a Midori Sour. It's a melon liquor, and the sour stuff (whatever it is) makes a nice tart experience. Plus, the drink is bright green! How can you resist that! (I mean that, too. My wife's friend was drinking one once at a party, and just looking at it I had to try it. Loved it ever since.)

And no matter what you have, yes, put it on the rocks. That always helps the refreshment factor.

Unfortunately it still costs $14 to actually get drunk with Natural Light.

Nonsense. It has nothing to do with drinking and driving; it's just an unfortunate by-product of the Prohibition era. As if a 21-year-old is less likely to drink and drive than an 18-year-old.

How can I not stand wine? It tastes like a cross between ear wax (and yes, when I was little, I put ear wax in my mouth so I DO know what the stuff tastes like) and vinegar.
I can't get brewskis past my nose, let alone down my throat, so screw the idea of beer (smells like urinals and salt to me, even the dark German lagers, which are really the only ones I'm interested in)..Sake tastes like straight vinegar to me. Also, I'm not really looking to start drinking regularly (I hope not to...my family and I are fairly certain that it's in my genes that I can't get more than maybe one serving of beer/wine/etc. down without getting addicted to da hooch)...I'm just looking to celebrate my 21st by making it official with a drink.
I think I WILL go for the daquiri, as I already love strawberries. I like sweet things, wine just proved too bitter for me. (I 've only had red so far...I figured since it was made from sweeter red grapes, it'd be sweeter. go figure.)

And PSX...do I HAVE to go over to England again, this time for the purpose of dropping trou and proving my gender to the world? 😛

To this day I have yet to taste a wine that makes me think of either of those flavours.

Maybe alcohol just isn't for you. Booze isn't sweet, it's not meant to be. This isn't candy we're talking about here. Even a daquiri still has that alcoholic kick to it. Want to drink something sweet? Stick with pop and Kool-Aid.

Not in my case. In my case, it's why God blessed me with an imagination that responds just as well to music as it does to video games, films and Point Horror books.

Weed is excellent for the imagination. One time when I was stoned I worked out the theory of time travel on paper, but I couldn't read my handwriting the next day. Go figure.

Actually, yes. It IS about drinking and driving.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_age

"The high U.S. minimum drinking age is based on minimizing car accidents. The U.S. population have for decades been heavy users of personal automobiles for transportation, and hence it has a higher fatality rate for drivers taking around 43,000 lives a year. According to proponents, the relatively high US drinking age lowers the risk of accidents and alcohol addiction in younger people. Studies appear to support this claim. Others argue that if one is old enough to vote and be drafted, one is old enough to drink, and that being introduced to alcohol at a younger age in a family environment means people are more likely to learn responsible drinking habits. Many also consider it unreasonable for college students to not experiment with alcohol until they are 21."

Wow, I said the same thing, except in two sentences.
So, no, it is not "nonsense" that I know why my own country's drinking age is 21. :rolleyes

I'd suggest something, but it's prolly to strong for what you have in mind. But I'll throw it in anyway.

It's called Toxic Waste.

It contains, 2 parts Blue Borrs (Or however that's spelt)
1 part Southern Comfort
1 part Absolut Vodka
2 parts Cranberry juice
1 part Orange Juice.

Reasons for drinking it;

The juice gives it a very nice fruity flavor, with a slight punch.
It practically glows
It dyes your mouth bright blue for about two days :]

But you did say you wanted something less strong, so it's likly not right:nn;

Go with teh daquri ^^

Hey man, weed is not a replacement for alcohol, and alcohol is not a replacement for weed. We're talking about two completely different experiences here.

So, no, it is not "nonsense" that I know why my own country's drinking age is 21.
Historically, it was about prohibition. By the 1820s people in the United States were drinking, on the average, 27 liters of pure alcohol per person each year, and many religious and political leaders were beginning to see drunkenness as a national curse. Many people believed a close relationship existed between drunkenness and the rising incidence of crime, poverty, and violence, concluding that the only way to protect society from this threat was to abolish the drunkard-making business.

Thus came Prohibition, and 12 or 13 years later thus went Prohibition, and the ridiculously high legal drinking age was left in its wake. Now, I dunno about you, but back in the 1930s, not many people had cars. Perhaps later on debate was re-opened to lower the drinking age, but the courts decided that two or three years' difference was somehow going to magically save millions of kids. Even though the incidence of car accidents where alcohol was a factor in Alberta (where the legal drinking age is 18) is minimal in the 18-21 range.

Indeed. It was 18 until 1984.

www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj...ngAge.html

If you're under 21, chances are that you can probably find some way to consume alcohol without getting in trouble.

Heh, we were gone on vacation for ten days recently and had to leave my 18 year old brother at home because of his work.
The day we got back, Mom went into the basement and could tell he had used the ping pong table to play a college drinking game with a bunch of guys. 😛

Agreed, now that I come to think of it. If I had to choose one over the other, though, I'd choose weed any day.
