I updated Windows a couple of days ago, and now I'm having problems!
For starters, a wierd Microsoft program keeps trying to access the internet, and refuses to let my virus scanner automatically regulate it. I had to tell Norton to block it entirely in the end, to stop the alerts!
Second, I can't recieve E-mails, and sending often freezes too. I use Outlook Express, and whenever it tries to connect, it fails.
Third, and most wierd of all, my computer now refuses to switch off! I hit the "Shut Down" button in the start menu, and one of 3 things happens:
1) Nothing. The start menu closes and the computer flicks back to the Desktop like nothing happened.
2) It begins to shut down, but then freezes on the "Saving Personal Settings" screen.
3) A small window, looking a little like the "Program is not responding" window, flicks onto the screen for a split second, then dissapeares, taking my icons and taskbar with it and leaving me with an empty wallpaper!
With all 3 options my mouse and keyboard freeze, and my only option is to cold-boot.
I've sent a message to Microsoft (after about 5 tries!) asking for their help, but I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same, and if anyone may have any ideas what's causing it?
These problems only started to occur after I downloaded the update on Saturday, and I have run a virus scan since then that came up with nothing, so I can only assume it's the update.
Wraith
Firstly, what version of Windows are you using? I'll assume you're on XP Service Pack 2 for the following.
I couldn't say which update (if any) is causing the problems, especially since to my knowledge no security updates in particular came out on Saturday (Thursday is usually the day they come out, methinks).
You might want to check your firewall hasn't been inadvertently set to block your email client.
Have you tried to do a System Restore to a date before you updated? Only works if you have a restore point to go back to, of course.
Do you know which update it was specifically? If you go on Add or Remove Programs and click the 'show updates' tab, you can find the individual hotfixes and remove 'em. If you don't know which one it is, you could always go on the date it was installed.
If all else fails, you could back up your files and do a complete reinstall of Windows.
Sorry yeah, forgot to say: Windows XP Home Ed with SP2.
It's possible they came out earlier...I just run the update every week or two, usually on a saturday, and download whatever's there.
I had a look at the Add/Remove priograms list and couldn't see anything other than the usual security updates. Wonder if it could be one of them o.O
Good point about the firewall, I'll check. I don't think I have a restore point though, and I don't wanna format unless I absolutely have to.
Wraith
You may want to check for a restore point (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore) even if you don't think you've got one. A lot of programs make 'em before they do their thing.
If you're not sure which update it is specifically, I wouldn't delete any of them. It's possible it isn't even related to it in that case.
Do you use a firewall?
Does it have ad blocker or privacy controls?
The reason I ask that is because I had the same problem.
Yeah Dreamer I do.
There have been some developments though. That program that was trying to access the net (Microsoft Printer Spooler Service it's called) came up again (DESPITE my blocking it multiple times) so I decided: "What th hey" and allowed it onto the net just once...
Next thing I know I have Spammed messages from Norton saying "Virus Detected!"
I've run the virus scanner and all and it looks like I've got rid of them, but the computer still has trouble switching off sometimes, and that infernal program keeps trying to access the net again! I've run a search to find and delete it but I can't locate it!
It shocks me that Microsoft could be infiltrated by hackers like that! Then again, maybe it IS Microsoft... (Starts thinking up conspiracy theories)
Any comments?
Sounds like Spyware dude, I'd suggest getting a better Spyware removal program with better dectators - I peronally use Adaware, Norton, and McAffe as a combo to make sure nothing touches me. Then again Norton and McAffe came with this. My solution is to download Adaware.
It's free for the trial, and I'd think thats all you'd need at this point.
I don't know if it'll work but you definatally got spyware. And this spyware is hurting your PC badly, your PC needs to be shut fof without you hitting 'power'.
Hope this has helped.
I find Spybot: Search and Destroy more effective than Adaware. Have a look for it...
You mean Lavasoft Adaware? I have the downloadable version of that, but that isn't detecting anything either.
And another update, the computer has switching off problems MUCH less now, thankfully. It still does happen once in a while though...
Wraith
Not quite enough info yet but I'll ask the following.
Do you have multiple resident scanners for either virus's, spyware, or lan traffic(firewall)?
What new programs OTHER than windows update have you installed, updated, OR changed.
I have seen these symptoms on several systems number relates:
1.
-Some updates require authentication from what I've heard, allow the program to access the internet. If it starts causing slowdown, then block it.
2.
-SMTP/POP settings where wrong on outlook.
-Also multiple virus scanners (MacAfee/AVG/Symantec(Norton)) were causes lockup when scanning files/email
3.
A: Relate to C: in all probability
B: Corrupted OS. It happened to my home system after downloading an update (over 2 weeks ago). Something about it wasn't implemented correctly. I was getting a new system anyway so I just formatted rather than system restore or remove updates till I found the right one.
C: A program is refusing to close properly or a service is not stopping properly. Make sure all programs are closed before shutting down, if it still does it it could be a service, if it is I'll go into that when you reply. Either way I think it names the file not closes, if it does write that down so the culprit will be identifyable.
As usual this isn't one problem, it looks to be several. I'm fighting the bugs in my new system as well. I have nastier more symptoms like BSOD sporadically in high graphics games(FEAR demo), shutdown while in other games(Rainbow6:RS), and hardlocking randomly. Least your problems are consistant and reproduceable.
~Rico
Ok Rico:
Quote:
Do you have multiple resident scanners for either virus's, spyware, or lan traffic(firewall)?
Nope, I have Norton Internet Security, including Virus Scanner and Firewall, and also Lavasoft Ad-Aware.
Quote:

None whatsoever.
1. I blocked it initially, but it kept coming back, so I allowed it, but only when I allowed it did all the viruses show themselves. It has since started requesting internet access again, and every time I hit "Block always" but it keeps coming back a few hours later.
2. SMTP/POP? Also, I know Virus Scanners can someimes clash, so I made sure I only had one: The best (from all accounts) I could find.
3.
A: "Relate to C: in all probability" Pardon?
B:Possibly. I don't want to format if at all I can help it, but the thought had crossed my mind. One thing I am wondering though is if it's a glitch in the update, maybe Microsoft will release another update to correct it soon.
C: I thought of this since my last post here, and so I checked. The file it tries to close is "App.DLL" I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is or what it does. Anyone know?
And lol I sympathise for your problems...computers: can't live with em, can't live without em
Wraith
It's spyware, kill it dead.
SMTP is the server you use to send your email. POP or POP3 is the server you look at to receive your email. If those settings are wrong then you won't receive email.
Problem A is probably related to problem C.
Were I you I'd run spybot and use its feature to look at your startup list and see what can be deleted. I don't see app.dll on my system anywhere though so it could be a piece of spyware.
~Rico
Sorry my bad, I got the file wrong. It's not "App.DLL" but "ccApp"
And yeah, I could use a decent spyware program. I thought Ad-Aware picked that up, but I guess I was wrong. A trip out to PC World is due I do believe!
About SMPT: When I try to sccess my E-mails it says "Connected" for a minute, then says "Your SMPT server is not responding. Wait another 60 seconds?" and no matter how many times I hit "Yes" it comes up with that message after 60 secs.
If it's not responding, would that be my settings or the server itself? And if it is my settings, how do I alter them? I haven't made any alterations to make it start doing this (not knowingly anyway) so I don't know what's triggered it.
Wraith
With spyware, it helps to use a couple of programs. You've already got Adaware, so I would recommend also using Spybot and Microsoft Antispyware. Don't bother buying any of the anti-spyware programs at PC World, because they aren't any better than the above free ones. Trust me, I used to work there.
With your email, it's possible (though unlikely, unless you use a small and obscure email client) that the server's down, and in that case, there's not a lot you can do but wait.
Depending on what program you use to get your emails, it depends on where you go to change the settings. In Outlook Express, go Tools > Accounts > (click on the one on the list that says 'default') > Properties > Servers. Your clients will be listed there. Just check if they have changed for any reason.
ccApp is a Norton file. It checks your email and does some auto protecting. The reason it's not closing properly is probably because it's still trying to check your emails when it's time to close down. I suppose it could cause problems receiving emails, but it shouldn't really. In theory, a re-install of Norton might fix it if it were the problem.
o.O Ok thanks! Question, do either of those conflict with Norton? (ie. would I have to turn Norton off to run them?)
I checked in Outlook and everything looks normal from what I can see. Norton could be the problem, but my E-mails were running ok before. I have downloaded an update for Norton, but only after the E-mail problem showed up.
The message I get is "The Server is not Responding" rather than "Cannot Connect" or anything...maybe the server is down for some reason...
Wraith
Nah, I've never heard of any conflicts.
It may be that the server's just down, but sometimes you get messages like that when it's not actually the cause, just what the computer thinks is the cause.
If you've gone through all your spyware scans (do it in safe mode) and still have the mail problem, perhaps try reinstalling Norton. That may fix the problem.
(to get safe mode press F8 when the computer is booting up and select safe mode on the menu that pops up)
o.O curious, I temporarely switched off the Norton E-Mail scans, and the computer shut down fine, however I still couldn't access any of my E-mails.
Anywho I've installed and scanned everything and deleted a few things that came up, and now none of the scans can turn up anything at all^^
Thanks for all the help everyone, and fingers crossed it stays this way! As far as the E-mail problem goes, I guess I'll just wait a bit to see if it corrects itself (ie. server comes back up or something) and if it doesn't I'll have to...erm...do someting, no idea what! lol
Wraith
Unless your system is at least a P4 with 512+ ram Norton is GOING to cause trouble. Unless you never run anything that really takes any system resources. Symantec is VERY ram heavy and takes a pretty big toll on the processor while scanning. Our poor little P4 we had for a DC apparently had a weakening processor. Symantec completely destroyed it.
What are your computers specs? And I believe ccAPP.dll is the symantec library file. *googles to confirm* Yep its a Norton DLL.
Something that may help is this. Run it, don't start fixing, just run it and post the log. That would help tremendously.
We need to start a computer help forum on this board. I'd be glad to man that beast, keep my troubleshooting skills in shape.
~Rico
That could be MC2's new purpose! 😀
No, that will be the "Ask Rico" forum. So we can spot troublemakers more easily. o.o

And, Wraith...tis a good policy to have. I might download the program if I ever have problems with my PC. I mean it's Rico he wouldn't plant a virus on ya would he?
Look for hijack this.
Specs are plenty for symantec. But in order to see if it IS spyware you need to run hijack this. Unless you happen to know what all is in your registry startup entrys, activeX controls, BHO's, toolbars, and default home, search, etc pages.

This is a command line for an ATI card. You also have lines Nvidia. If you are currently running an Nvidia card, put a check by this one and hit fix. Otherwise let me know and I'll point out out which are Nvidia's entries.

You are running active scans with both Gian...er I mean Microsoft's AntiSpyware AND SpySweeper. If both are installed you may want to disable resident scanning on one. It could be causing trouble. Also if Norton is scanning constantly for adware to that WILL cause trouble when all three hit a file at once. You can have multiple adware deleting programs installed, but its usually not a good idea to have them all in resident memory scanning for stuff.

This the only piece of the malware I see. This is a file from "smiley central" a rather annoying piece of adware. Put a check by it and hit fix.
Overall the system looks pretty clean. But I think having 2 or 3 programs scanning in resident memory all the time may be causing some of your problems. If norton has a spyware scanner leave it in resident and disable Spysweeper and Gian.. I mean Microsofts. If Norton doesn't have a active scanner (I don't recall) then just disable SpySweeper and use microsoft's.
~Rico
I only installed Microsoft Spyware and Spybot after they were recommended here. I'll go turn one of them off now.
One question though...what on earth do you mean "put a check by this one and hit fix"? You mean in that program you gave me?
Also, how do you mean about ATI and Nvidia Cards? Graphics cards? I have a G-Force 6 installed atm. Plus, aren't they the same? I thought the full title for the ATI one was "ATI Radeon", Radeon being another proguct from Nvidia.
Sorry, I'm just completely computer illiterate...you'll probably have to spell everything out for me with baby's letter blocks
Wraith
You've got an Nvidia card. ATI is a different company.
Quote:

See if Norton also as a anti-spyware program with it. I know corporate does, not sure about your version. If you just installed those two then that may not be the problem, but I'd diable all but one programs resident scanner to avoid future problems.
Quote:

Sorry, yeah, in hijack this you put a check in the box next to the line and hit the "fix" button. Then you have to rescan to the list back again.

ATI Radeon is from the ATI company. The Geforce 6 series is from Nvidia, a different company. Put a check by the ATI line and hit "fix" to remove it as well.
There's only been antispyware in the home Norton suite for a few months, so unless it's very new it's doubtful that it's on.
Norton is the 2005 edition, and it says it has spyware protection, but it doesn't seem to do much protecting.
One question though, why is it that when I had an ATI Radeon graphics card, the options menu for it had a Nvidia backdrop? Not that it matters really.
But yeah, the only problem I'm having now is to do with the E-mails, and that started before I installed the Spybot and Microsoft programs. I hear what your saying about two of them picking up the same though. I don't think Spybot has an alert watch or anything does it, and Norton doesn't seem to be picking up Spyware, so I may leave the Microsoft one on.
I'll get rid of the ATI thing too. Thanks^^
Wraith
Spybot does. But you have to enable it. Unless you see what looks like a app window icon with a padlock on it in your system tray, spybot's teatimer is off. It has a second one but I've never had conflicts with it and microsoft.
I'm not seeing any software problems or spyware. I'd double and triple check your account setting on outlook. Make SURE your smtp and pop servers are typed in right.
