Well, I've just got back from seeing the new The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe movie, and I have to say, I'm highly impressed!
I went to the cinema with the expection of seeing a beloved childhood memory twisted and abused, as I would with any book. Moreso in fact, for although I have not read it in years, LLW holds a special place in my heart.
After this movie, it holds an even dearer place. The movie was a wonderful telling of C.S.Lewis's tale, everything was in the right place, and there was, to my memory at least, minimal discrepencies from the book. Although I reaaaaly want to re-read it now (along with the rest of the Cronicals. Luckily, I can borrow them off a friend =D)
The Children: Okay, probably the biggest flaw, the kids. They have harry potter syndrome, by which I mean, wooden acting galore. Though Little Lucy is astoundingly good, the rest are...meh. However, they all look the part, and definatly fill the roles well enough.
The Ice Queen: Now, the White Witch is one of those few people who have always held a small grip of terror over my heart. And this new incarnation, delivers well. At first, she dosn't seem much, mostly her eyes are creepy. But then you look at her palid, cold, dead skin. And then you become scared.
And then you see her fight. She is one lady I would not like to come up against, every move she makes is cold, calm and calculated evil.
Aslan! Oooooh, he looks the buisness alright, nothing special by today's standards, but looks fine. His mane looks especially good. But then he speaks. I totally wasn't expecting the voice that came out, but it worked so well. Liam Neason IS Aslan. He is just so...just, he sounds wise, noble, and brave. Just how the Great Cat should be.
On the topic of looks though, the scenery in this movie is awesome, totally. The creatures are either physical costumes, which for the most part are very good, but have some VERY obvious exceptions (tempory dwarves, I'm looking at you!) Or there are the CGI animals and beasts. The reality based animals are so exquisitally detailed it numbs the mind to think about it, some of the more abstact ones...less so, but still good. The main flaw with the CGI though, is the lighting really. Almost all the CGI animals have a lighting problem, making them a lot brighter then the rest of the world...
But the voices. OH the voices. The CGI animals have such brilliant voices. Everything seems tailor made for the characters.
Whichever way you look at it, I recommend this movie, it's definatly this years christmas must see!
Special mentions go to Mr and Mrs Beaver (Mrs Beaver = Dawn French! =D) And Phillip
Darkie's downpoint: Wolves get bad press in this movie =(
i really badly want to see this film, as i loved the books compleately as a child..still like them now, to be honest.
glad to see that people are happy with it, i'm always worried they'll change too many things when they adapt my fave books into films. ^^;
I'm seeing it tomorrow.
