Okay, my desktop crashed back in November and one guy had it for months then I gave it to another guy, "Ken," who kept it for about another 3 months. He finally got it fixed and brought it back Monday. The problem was that the power supply was fried and it did the same to the motherboard, but the harddrive remained intact. However, apparently the first guy that got it did something to it or something because when I tried to reregister it, the computer would not accept the code in its memory nor the code on the back of the computer.
Also, because of the new mb and hd, the recovery DVD, that came with my computer when I bought it, didn't recognize it and would not work. Seeing that there was no choice but to wipe the thing clean and install the version of XP Ken had, I lost all my data from before the crash.
Anyway, my question is after what happened can my old data be recovered, and if so, could you recommend a data recovery program that's free and/or cheap? Thanks in advance!
I'm not a GeekSquad memeber [=P] but i'm pretty sure there is a way to recover that old data. Someone once told me every single thing ever is saved somewhere on your computer. You can't delete anything for good. Congrats on getting your comp. back though. =)
I don't know a free recovery software, thats why people charge lots of money for this type of data recovery. Even here in Ratsass Oklahoma it runs 300 bucks.

There is no free data recovery program... You have to send the hard drive in... And there is no guarantee that the process will work.
Rico is definitely right with the price. If it's something you absolutely need, then go ahead and get the recovery done.
I dont worry about any of that stuff... this computer is extreamly slow and speddish...
... @ sma
You do realize that any computer can crap out at any time, right? Hell, this is something we all should worry about. That's why making an effort to back up you computer every so often is a good idea.
And did you just say your computer is extremely slow... and speedy? Or is it Swedish? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_che f">Does everything you read look like this?
I think he meant "Sped-ish" as in referring to a Computer that seemed to have ADD.

Nah, it's not anything I absolutely need just some papers, that I don't need now, and some emails I would've liked to keep, but it would have been nice. *sigh* Oh, well, just got to learn to make backups encase something like this happens again, but Ken said there was some free ones on CNet but I guess he was wrong.*shrugs*
There might be, I haven't had need for one for years since I have a backup drive here and we have a remote backup solution at work.

EDIT: It sure is a good thing ezboard has such efficient flood control!

A lot of people who don't know a lot about computers say that. For the most part it's really not true.
When you delete something, the data generally still exists on the computer, you just can't access it with an icon like you could before. Also, it can be written over at any time with new data, since the computer doesn't care about preserving the old data anymore.
The writing over old data with new data is why it's not guaranteed that data recovery will work.
XDXD Very efficient.
Run to the store, whilst flailing your arms and screaming, and grab a copy of Norton... Unless of course you have a Mac... Then Norton will just tell you "You own a Mac, you are an idiot... The data is f***ing gone!"...
You think installing Norton SAVES data?

For all the Norton hate out there, I'm satisfied with Norton Internet Security Suite 2006. o.o
But are you satisfied by good things?
Clearly not, since he absolutely hates the Wii and loves his PS3...
