...Ok, so retconinng the first movie is BAD.

But holy crap that looks badass. I just wish Gwen and Venom made proper apperances.

I'd fangasm, but the retcon just pisses me off too much.

I think I have to agree here.

Half of me is a quivering mess of fan-boy...

The other half is just like "WTF?".

I guess, like always, I'm just gonna have to wait and see how it all turns out.

I said when they announced Sandman as the villain that they'd need some way to connect him to Spider-Man, after the first 2 movies had villains he knew. Just some random super-powered thug wouldn't have the same impact. The retconning is quite a huge pile of retconning, but hopefully they can make it make sense. A vendetta against a ridiculously powerful villain makes Peter Parker keeping the symbiote, and not immediately wanting to ditch it, make a lot more sense.

Sandman has potential to be a lot tougher than... basically any villain I can think of in Spider-Man. He could be written as a shape-shifter with near invulnerability, rocks for fists, and the ability to blow away a street with a sandstorm. Oh and unlike the others, he's not crazy only because of his powers, but a hardened amoral criminal thug BEFORE he got his powers. I wonder how they're going to write this. Water is shown to be used against him in at least one scene. I don't think they'll top the incredible choreography in Spider-Man 2, but this could be very interesting.

Is it really a retcon? They might explain it in the film, after all we didn't actually see Ben Parker get shot. And if the Sandman is supposed to be the guy who killed Ben in the first movie who somehow survived his fall (he uh... landed safely on sand), it could possibly be just another actor playing the crook from the first film. They do that all the time on soap operas. 😛

One things for sure, May is not soon enough. Spiderman 2 is still my favourite superhero film, so this film has a lot to live up to. I just wish they could've had the Black Cat show up like they intended in Spiderman 2.

Just watched the trailer again, Letterman is in it! *is a huge Letterman fan* Perhaps he'll throw Spiderman into a tank to see if he floats. :]

What Spite says. It's not a retcon if it directly contradicts what we've seen. We did not see Uncle Ben get shot. For all we know, Sandman might have been the carjacker's (the one Peter THOUGHT was his Uncle's killer) partner, and probably ran off after killing Ben. Carjacker took the car, Sandman ran away, thus avoiding the police and Spider-Man and whatnot.

But the trailer looks AWESOME.

"THIS is your uncles ACTUAL killer"

Also, the car jacker is BLATANTLY driving Sam Raimi's car (Uncle Ben's car in the movie).

Thusly there is a case of retconning. The story and evidence suggests that the killer stole Uncle Ben's car, Peter causes him to crash THAT car.

Thusly they've retconned a new scenario in there.

That's going to be frickin' amazing. Though the retconning could be tweaked, I'm sure it will make sense. They have enough action in this one to equal Spider Man 2-what with Sandman, GGII and just the idea of Venom.

Honestly whether this lives up to Spiderman 2...I don't know. I don't care. I want to see this and love it for what it is.

Also, it's possible for the police to lead Peter on a wild goose chase-they DO make mistakes. I'm sure they won't do that whole "O we lied-sorry HAHAHA" at the end of the movie, but the possibility still exists.

the movie looks great, and i don't really care too much about the retconning. so long as the movie kicks ass, it doesn't bother me.

At first I agreed with you, but then (while on the toilet, where people do their best thinking) I thought that it could be explained properly.

The car jacker told Ben to get out of the car waving his gun about. Ben gets out and calls the police. Sandman pops up and kills Ben for money probably. Admittedly my Spiderman 1 memories are a bit hazy but one thing I do remember is a huge time difference between Peter getting dropped off at the library and Peter seeing Ben lying on the ground. It went from about noon to night (I think).

That trailer does look cool though.

OBJECTION!

That would be what we in the business call retcon.

If it was not a retcon, then there would be clear indication in the first movie that Marko had done it. As ALL evidence suggests that the guy who stole his car did, that means that they would have to go out of their way to find a reason to have Marko do it instead, and only have the police work this out 4-5 years later in the canon.

Because EVERYONE in the world loves a black recolour of the hero who is evil and more powerful. I mean... that's such a cool and original idea!!!

I hate Venom. I hate Shadow. I hate Akuma. I hate Thailog. I hate Dark Link.

I hate all shadow characters. Especially ones named Shadow.

...incidentally, I like the "Evil and funnier, yellow counterparts" like Wario and Negaduck.

So the script is true. On SHH about half a year ago, the script was unveiled. It was right on the money so far, with mentioning the black suit and Spidey vs. Sandman at the Subway. But it also mentioned about Sandy murdering Uncle Ben...I guess everything else is true...

Looks entertaining enough.
I'm not convinced by the new Goblin, but... we'll see.
Retcon? Meh. Deoends how well they pull it off. It's hardly as if the films are faithful to any comic.

Saw this a while back and it looks awsome, Paintballer goblin ("Nightflyer" I think I have seen rumours of) and the retconniness are a bit odd, but the rest looks wonderfull.

This trailer is however seemingly concerned only with the spidy-symbiote venom, not the actual villainous Brock-Venom. Which is great, more interesting storylineness I feel. However it does mean we won't be seeing much of this smexy smexy looking model taken from the very end of the proto-trailer. THAT's a good looking Venom.

Comic reading fans have known this since before he put on the Iron Spider outfit. The final issue of The Other had Peter ruin his last Spidey outfit, and it's common knowledge that he has that cotton black outfit that Felicia gave him.

Oh and the creators said so, too.

What bashing the movie?

We have been bashing ASPECTS of the movie sure, but no-one yet has said anything bashing about the movie itself. Craigs been bashing Venom as a character in general (well, not bashing, he gave reasons, but I'm making an odd sort of point) and retconation of Ben's killer, which has been disscussed as "Going to be odd." And I personally detest Paintballer goblins looks. But none of those are the movie itself.

Read the topic again and you'll notice we are in general looking forward to it o.o

I guess people must have standards for the word 'bashing'...

Well I'm going to be blunt about the people who don't like Venom; chances are... you won't like 60% of the movie, then.

Think about it.

Eddie Brock's character plays a big part in the film; Eddie Brock turns into Venom.

The Symbiote is also a major part of the film ; the Symbiote turns into Venom.

The 'I'm supposed to be GG2 but am some lame paintball kid' character who is Harry Osborne gets killed off by... Venom.

The entire belltower scene shown in the trailer -- Venom's origin.

The entire final battle scene involves Sandman, Spiderman, GG2, and... Venom.

Mary Jane Watson is also kidnapped by... Venom.

So, if you don't like Venom, enjoy your 45 minutes of Sandman and Peter Parker talking to Aunt May.

Actually, by the look of the trailer so far, I'd say this movie is more a lead up to venom, then venom as a villain. It seems from what I (and others I've lurked around on different places) can gather to be a spidey-sybiote movie, which is not venom as a seperate character really, more an internal fight, leading up to Eddie-Venom for spidey 4. You just seem to be looking for reasons to lash out at peole Alex o.o

First off, where on Earth did you get the "Harry is killed by Venom" stuff?

In the comics, Harry died from drug overdose, in the cartoons he was committed, in the trailer for this movie it shows that Peter is the one who hospitalises him.

Unless you mean "Venom" as in "Peter-Symbiote" then your sources are way off.

Anywho. Don't feel all bad. I'm a comic book fan, we're a cowardly superstitious lot. I have no love for Sandman either, dear heavens, he's a C-List Spidey reject character who's only interesting time was when he was a SHIELD agent, and spent most of his career with PASTE POT PETE as a Fantastic Four villain.

I realise that Electro and Sandman are the two enemies who, logically, could batter the crap out of Spidey, but that doesn't make them good characters.

I'm looking forward to the movie for the way it seems to be following the 90's cartoon more than the comics themselves. That alone intrigues me. The action scenes and CGI look pretty tasty, I LOVE the Gwen Stacy character (though she only works as Peter's FIRST love, hence why he's so hooked up on her), Harry-Goblin was one of the best ASM plots and if it gets more than 15 minutes screen time, I'll be happy.

I'm just slightly concerned about the movie continuity. It flows in real time, the difference between Spidey 1 and Spidey 2 is 3 years. I assume the same holds true for Spidey 3. Why would the police realise that Mr. Radioactive Sand was the killer a full 6 years later when ALL evidence points to random thug?

That's not a bash, that's a serious question. Just like "How can JMS write two 17-20 year old kids of Gwen Stacy when she's only been dead for 8 years and was only 21 at the time"

There may be an answer, but I doubt I'll like it.

I'm the LAST person you'll see bash this movie, I'm possibly the biggest Spider-Fan about now that VCP is gone, but being a big fan means I want this done RIGHT and I went it done well. I'd rather be happily suprised than majorly disappointed, so I am approaching with caution.

As for Venom. If you were a comic book fan, you'd damn right KNOW why we hate Venom.

Did you know that originally Eddie Brock was a reporter who hated Spidey because his nasty criminal informant was arrested by him? Oh, wait... they changed that didn't they?

How about the fact that the symbiote was found during Secret Wars on that plane... no, wait, planet of the symbiotes... damn I forgot.

It's a magical su... no, wait, it's alive. No, wait, it's EVIL... no... wait... THEY'RE ALL EVIL!!! No... wait... it's good. It's bad... It's ok.

It's eaten Carnage. No... wait. There's Carnage again, eat him again... oh crap, he went to the negative zone and found a clone of himself!

As for Eddie Brock himself.

I'm a reporter, I'm a photographer, I'm a nasty guy, I stalk Peter, I stalk my Ex-Wife, I'm a good guy, I'm a Christian, I'm stalking again, my ex-wife committed suicide, I'm bad, I'm good, I'm bad, I'm good, I'm good, I'll sell my suit on EBay to some git called The Scorpion, I slit my wrists, I'm still alive... I love Jesus.

Dear heavens. Venom is Mac Gargon right now!

-

I have legitimate reasons for hating the comic version of Venom. I have hopes that the movie version wont be as bad, especially as I read that Raimi hates him just the same as any self-respecting Spider-Fan should.

Well, on the topic of Venom, I'm a very lazy comic book fan. I don't subscribe or regularely buy any issues, but if something intrigues me, I will grab the trade paperbacks. There was a Venom series of trade paperbacks I bought recently because the art was beautiful, and it didn't require a heckuva lot of knowledge into the backstory, which was fine by me. Those seemed cool. I'd reference them, but they're back with the rest of my stuff in New York. All I remember is that it started in Alaska and ended in New York

I was introduced to Spider-Man by the Genesis video game (well, actually, the cheesy live action TV movie, but I saw the villains in that game), so to me Sandman and Venom are cool, because they were both mysterious and powerful bosses and I didn't see any crappy comic continuity related to them. 😛

So if Sam Raimi hates Venom and wants to do the Lizard, I wonder why this movie isn't Spider-Man 4. Maybe he'll turn Venom into a decent character in his version, but it's weird that he'd choose to go in this order if he's quitting the series after Spider-Man 3.

Having Venom join every boss fight in Nightmare mode just made him more cool.

Notice I keep spelling it Spider-Man. Yes VCP has set me straight.

I really need to find the Comic-Con Panel interview, and a few more that were posted on iMDB.

Raimi confirmed in an interview, two things;

His 'hatred' for Venom was only to throw off people from thinking Venom would be in the movie in the first place.

He also confirmed Harry would die, trying to save Peter from Venom in the final battle.

Why they would let loose those particular details, I'm not sure.

As for the movie version of Venom, he's being taken from different versions from ever comic continuity; Eddie Brock is inspired by the Ultimate Spider-Man version.

&& yeah, the comic version of Venom was pretty much scrambled up; but the movie Venom isn't going to be as complicated or jumbled up, and his origin is being taken from the 90's cartoon. So hopefully he'll turn out alright. Either way, I'm excited.

As for a source, go to imdb.com and browse the Spider-Man 3 boards; a factual article will pop up every now and then, amidst the flat-out crap.
