You may know I am something of a fan of mad science.
I also consider steampunk rather cool.
Humor is a big plus in stories.
Oh, and being an addictive, fast moving (considerable content on every page) plot loaded with twists that get revealed but are hinted at so much that you know the writers must have planned out a ton of story in advance is a plus, especially when you re-read it and discover things that are clues that you didn't even understand the first time.
Why does that main page illustration remind me of the Egg Fleet portion of the Sonic Heroes opening?
And yes, everything is better with steampunk.
The art style is ew.
That is all.
Gotta agree with Bat here, I've been aware of Girl Genius since last year's ComiCon (a podcast did an interview with the creator and was hyping it up something fierce), story and all that intrigued me, but I couldn't stomach the art to bother catching up, too much going on, seriously, the amount of time and effort they take to pencil and ink the pattern on her waistcoat could be used to make 3/4 extra comics, and all it does is clutter the page and make it look like someone threw up ink all over the page.#
Tis a shame, I hear nothing but good things.
Ugh, you know, it;s the damndest thing.
Initially I had dismissed this comic because I didn't like the black-and-white old-school style, but having nothing else to do I began reading. The style eventually did grow on me, but I didn't know how much until it switched sudenly over to this super-shiny anime watercolor BS.
So now I'm back where I started, trying to ignore the art style.
Been reading it for a while, but then I like Foglio's style, and have done for ages.
That brightly coloured style has always been what he's used in older work, too- the black-and-white was almost a step backwards.

That was pretty much my reaction when I saw it a year ago. (I don't see how you can call it anime, though. It's more like the anti-anime and gives a thouroughly old westen feel, which fits the setting really.) Then I clicked the comic again more recently, and it had a particularly interesting scene up, and I just had to see how that scene was set up. So I started reading again and the style grew on me. I don't think it's a good style, but it's not so off-putting after a while. As the jagermonsters start to get more developed, the style seems to fit the story too.
Ugh.
I'm up to about mid-2006 on this beast, and I have to admit it is some quality stuffs. I'll probably demolish the rest of the old archives tomorrow, then wait around for some more. It really is quite a nice little comic.
It hurts my eyes.
I've been reading this for a good while now, and find it thoughroughly enjoyable. I can see where people are coming from on the art style, but heck, there is a lot worse out there and the style can be quite fun sometimes. I did perfer the black and white though...
Anywhom, yay for Jagerkin!
I got interested in Girl Genius about three years ago - but it moves so darned fast that with my 'net access issues, I haven't really caught up for months. 🙁
And yes: yay for Jagerkin! 🙂
