Waves Pound Beaches As Dennis Nears Coast

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - Hurricane Dennis closed in on the Gulf Coast on Sunday with battering waves and high wind after strengthening into a dangerous Category 4 storm, roaring toward a region still patching up damage from a hurricane 10 months ago. More than 100 miles ahead of the eye of the storm, rain blew sideways and wind exceeded 45 mph in some spots Sunday morning and rolling waves pounded piers and beaches. Landfall was expected late Sunday afternoon somewhere along the coast of the Florida Panhandle, Alabama or Mississippi, where nearly 1.4 million people were under evacuation orders and some towns were almost deserted. news.yahoo.com/fc/world/hurricanes_and_tropical_storms

This storm is heading through the same areas that are still recovering from last year season. But then again no one from that area should be shocked that another one is hitting them again.

I hope that everyone is safe and there are no more deaths because of the storm.

It sort of bothers me though to hear people on the news get upset about hurricane damage. If you live in the Flordia panhandle it seems to me that you should just get used to the idea that there are going to be violent hurricanes every year. When we have tornadoes in Texas and homes are destroyed the sentiment seems to be more "well it's bad that this happened, but I guess we do live in tornado alley" instead of "HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO US AGAIN?".

My point exactly. It seems like a lot of people expect these things to happen only once every few years.

Personally I love major storms/weather events like these. Its like showing the raw power of nature.

Raw power indeed. I'm glad I live in north-western Alabama because all we get are 40 mph winds, crazy rain storms, and school closing sometimes. Too bad it's summer. *maimed* And as Ms. Astrid, I hope everyone is safe...last I heard tons of people were coming up my way, to avoid the disaster.

Heh, yes. I'm still shocked at how many storms they got last year with almost no break in between...yeesh. Hope everything is okay there and also in Tornado Alley because I know this is the time of year when it can get rough (Trust me, the storms you guys get that spawn tornadoes come over the mountains and rarely drop anything until they get to the plains)

The scary part is when I go down to Texas next month, I'm praying to see a tornado.

They only happen in the spring time. Rarely in the fall. Almost never in the Summer and Winter. We haven't even seen rain in a good month and a half in central and north Texas, much less storms.

Well luckly this hurricane is strong enought to move very far inland, I live in the St Louis area and we've been a drought for a good while. We seriously need this rain. Just 2 weeks ago in my area, a pipe line busted and lots of Boil orders were put out. Luckly that has passed, but still we are in need of this rain... so im stayin in more often this week to talk to you guys since i don't wanna go anywhere in the rain! :^^

Hate me but I doubt it's strong enough to move that far inland. Once over land, it dies faster than an ice cream sundae in the Sahara...if the Jet Stream is being kind, you may get some of the leftover storms but if not...you're screwed...

I'm sure someone will correct me on this but so what? I haven't even gotten to my courses yet on my degree in meteorology and my memory might be sketchy...

I heard about something like that in the news. Dennis the menacing was the head line. Seems like it caused a lot of damage. On the coast anyway.

Not as much as people were thinking though. It's certainly no Hurricane Ivan...trust me.

Yep that is absolutely right. Once the source of warm water is cut off these storms die faster than a fly in a venus fly trap forest..(yeah that works):nn;

Anywho I got two more years to go before I get my degree in meteorology..yay.

Yea, thats true, but the problem is that people have become used to Hurricane season not being that bad. I mean, ive lived in South Florida for the past 8 Years or so, and up until last year we hadnt gotten anything that could be considered a 'big' storm. And now within a period of 2 years we've gotten like 3-4 relatively damaging hurricanes. I hear it's because of somtheing with El Nio, but i can't remember the specifics.

so.... yea.
