As someone who works in the media, even the media doesn't know why the media is making such a big deal of this.
Okay, that made no sense, but every person I've worked with in the news industry has been wondering the last few days why this has become such a frakking big deal.

Apparently covering wars and political strife abroad doesn't get the kind of ratings that brings in the advertisers. We need some homespun Melrose Place-esque drama to really reel in the war-weary public.
Washington politicians especially love it when attention is steered away from them, makes it easier to conduct business.
We weren't supposed to care in the first place. It was just Anna trying to entertain us from beyond the grave, and again, a lot of us don't care.
