BBC news:

Quote:

Saddam Hussein 'executed in Iraq'
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been executed by hanging at an unspecified location, reports say.

Iraqi TV said the execution took place just before 0600 local time (0300GMT). It was witnessed by a doctor, lawyer and officials. It was also filmed.

US troops and Iraqi security forces are on high alert for any violent backlash.

Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by an Iraqi court on 5 November after a year-long trial over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town Dujail.

I came in this thread expecting every one of these posts to be "YAY HE'S DEAD I SHALL NOW CELEBRATE THE EXTINGUISHING OF HUMAN LIFE" But only Trans delivered.

The rest of you need to learn to be more tasteless.

Well, at least something America can claim as postive has now come out of the Iraq debacle.
Hurrah!

Normal people don't celebrate when a bad guy dies, they just go on about there life knowing there is one less goblin on the loose.

Altho the funniest (and possibly most tasteless) caption I've yet read is "Yeah, a belated Christmas present: a Saddam YoYo"

If so, link please?

TV would only show the preparation and then cuts to the body shot.

Apparently, he showed no remorse whatsoever. So much for that "paradise" he created.

Actually, Dreamer, according to what I've read, the camera was shut off just as the execution was carried out, probably because death by hanging can take a very long time, and can be a very torturous thing to carry out.

But again, that's what I've read. ^^;;

I heard from a rather reliable source what Saddam's final words were before they hung him from the gallows.

It was something along the lines of...

"My fortune is yours for the taking, but you'll have to find it first. I left everything I own in One Piece..."

I don't find it sad or depressing that the man is gone. Executions happen.

I do find it sad that the video is, in fact, on the Internet.

I'm not linking it, and I'm not saying where I found it, but it is up, and it is real.

That depresses me. What kind of person brings a cameraphone to something like that, and how did nobody care to check them? In a day and age where anything can be proven and shown on a global scale in a matter of minutes, you'd think something like a private execution would be a bit more tight.

Saw it.

Kinda shocked they got so close...with a cellphone camera. But...

Sakaki...

Who brings a cellphone to an event like that? The same person that brings a Cellphone to any event in their lives that they feel may need to be captured-or shared with others that aren't there, that's who

Not like it does anything but confirm the man is dead but wow. Its filmed. Yay. move on.

Well, it IS history. It's not like I sit there trying to find youtubed vids of people being hanged, Cyc. o.o Also; sarcasm is lost in text rather easily.

What Dirk said.

I tried for a while to find the video and only found the one that stops before it actually happens and then shows the body.

This isn't about moral superiority, it's about not finding entertainment in the form of watching a human being die.

Not much of my views can be said without being completely identical to Cycle or forcing my Political and Moral views down others throats. But just to qoute Cycle.

Finding Entertainment in the death or involvement of death of a human being is disgusting.

Hmm.

If you're going to show disgust about some people's reactions to the death of a dictator/tyrant, don't be selective.

Besides, what about the Iraqis celebrating that this evil man is finally dead? Or the Italians who celebrated when Mussolini was finally taken down? If you're going to fault some of us for celebrating/feeling good/being glad that there's one less tyrant in the world, you might as well call them 'f*cking sickos' to.

There's a difference between accepting that someone deserves to die, and actively wanting to seek out footage of it for - presumably - entertainment.

Noted and filed THS.

Also, I just realized something.

Am I wrong, or is this the first time in history that a genocidal dictator has been deposed, arrested, given due process, convicted in a duly constituted court of law and executed according to legal protocol?

Lenin and Stalin both died of natural causes or were murdered (depending on which account you trust), Kun was killed in a gulag, Mao and Ho Chi Minh and Cromwell died of natural causes, Hitler, Allende and Pol Pot offed themselves, Ceausescu and Robespierre and Mussolini were summarily executed without trial, but I can't think of a single case where a dictator was actually brought to justice according to the norms of international law.

That in itself is a singular achievement in modern history.

No it isn't. The US orchestrated it all just to make themselves look good. It was all staged.

Besides, ever heard of Nuremburg? Granted it isn't normal for us to do it to a supreme leader, but it's not like this is the first war criminal trial in history.

As for the entertainment bit, fascination and curiosity doesn't equal entertainment. I like looking at people's death as much as any other normal human. Stop trying to be so high and above us by telling people we think it's entertainment.

I'm glad they hung Saddam, and yes, I hope it hurt. But I don't go around looking for video and pictures. It's not entertaining, it's not fulfilling, and it's not satisfying. It is not normal human behaviour to enjoy watching things die.

Fascination and curiosity is stomping on an ant and watching its crushed form writhe and twitch for a few seconds before giving up the ghost. Watching snuff videos where real people are murdered is another thing entirely.

In all honesty, I searched and found one. Not hard to find. No, I won't share a link. I was actually more interested in seeing it because, well, I've never seen it before. Creepy though, if I do say so myself.

While I'm all for the death penalty, I still think a good bullet is the quickest thing...

I just saw it now.

I didn't laugh at it, I didn't cry. I didn't find any enjoyment from watching it, but I didn't show any remorse, either.

I don't know where people can get off saying "OMG how can you watch it for entertainment, freaks!?"

To be honest, I thought it was going to be a bit more flashy and more spectacle. But, well.

Anyway, I was glad to have seen this part of history being made. Thank you, Information Age.

Okay, I'm by no means sad that Saddam Hussein is dead. I think it had to be done and I think that the world is a better place without him in power. However, I can't say I'm not appalled by a lot of our reactions to it...

I don't often take offense to anything David Letterman says, but seeing The Late Show yesterday, where he made light of the execution and got enormous cheers, it brought back images of the Palestenians dancing and cheering in the streets after 9/11, only this time it was us. There's something wrong in celebrating the death of a human being, no matter how evil we believe him to be.

Okay, we're all horrible people and we deserve to die for not being upset at his death. Myself, Dad and I joked around about it for a few minutes when I passed him in the hall. "'Bout damn time!" "A bit late for Christmas, but that's okay."

Fascination and curiosity is stomping on an ant and watching its crushed form writhe and twitch for a few seconds before giving up the ghost. Watching snuff videos where real people are murdered is another thing entirely.
Actually, I've never purposefully killed any creature to watch it die. o.o

All I can find on Google are scam ads and the video that shows him being led to the noose and whatnot. Someone SXtheKitsune@gmail.com a link to me, or IM it or something?

My friend sent me the video. Yeah, he deserved what he got, but I don't really know how people can find amusement in watching someone actually die. It was pretty unsettling for me.

For the last time guys, it isn't amusement, to me, it's just fascination and curiosity with the fact that history is being made here. I mean, what just happened is going to be the things our kids will learn about in history class. I'd love to be able to say "Yeah, I even watched it happen, live."

Still, will anyone email me?

Well, a bit late, a bit. Just now saw the video. Thanks, he who sent it. I'll forward it to Dad, I guess.

(I intentionally left the name out. If you want to be known, I'll leave it to you to say you sent it. Might as well let you get yourself into a flaming match for "entertainment." by those that don't understand that there's more to life than entertainment.)

EDIT: There's a second video, showing the body. Link inside the story. Graphic warning.

Is there no security against camera phones in Iraq or something? Seriously, just walking up to a shrouded dead body and taking pictures?

This may be the first time I've ever agreed with President Bush:

Dude, who taunts a man with a noose around his neck? Not that Saddam doesn't deserve far worse than a hanging - IMO, he shoulda been left in the desert and shot at with chemical rounds from artillery pieces until he died - but seriously, who taunts a guy on the gallows? That's just...as bad as someone like Saddam.

Someone with a more personal reason to want to see him harmed than you and your strange chemical round thing.
