BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced Sunday to death by hanging for war crimes in the 1982 killings of 148 people in the town of Dujail, as the former leader, trembling, shouted "God is great!"As he, his half brother and another senior official in his regime were convicted and sentenced to hang, Saddam yelled out, "Long live the people and death to their enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"
Some feared the verdicts could intensify
Iraq's sectarian violence after a trial that stretched over nine months in 39 sessions and ended nearly 3 1/2 months ago. Clashes immediately broke out Sunday in north Baghdad's heavily Sunni Azamiyah district, and a Sunni political leader condemned the court decision."This government will be responsible for the consequences, with the deaths of hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands, whose blood will be shed," Salih al-Mutlaq, the Sunni politician, told the al-Arabiya satellite television station.
During Sunday's hearing, Saddam initially refused the chief judge's order to rise; two bailiffs lifted the ousted ruler to his feet and he remained standing through the sentencing.
Before the session began, one of Saddam's lawyers, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, was ejected from the courtroom after handing the judge a memorandum in which he called the trial a travesty.
Chief Judge Raouf Abdul-Rahman pointed to Clark and said in English, "Get out."
In addition to the former Iraqi dictator and Barzan Ibrahim, his former intelligence chief and half brother, the Iraqi High Tribunal convicted and sentenced Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the head of Iraq's former Revolutionary Court, to death by hanging. Iraq's former Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Three other co-defendants were convicted of murder and torture and sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
One defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence.
The guilty verdict for Saddam is expected to enrage hard-liners among Saddam's fellow Sunnis, who made up the bulk of the former ruling class. The country's majority Shiites, who were persecuted under the former leader but now largely control the government, will likely view the outcome as a cause of celebration.
They still do hangings?
Hanging him seems kind of weird they should just starve him and watch him die slooooowly.
You mean like that Terri Schiavo woman? (Damn I MG'ed the thread)
Anyway, is it really a good thing to do this? I'm quite undecided on this.
On one hand, He has faced the Iraqi justice system and will be punished for his crimes under Iraqi law.
On the other hand though, by allowing him to live out the rest of his life in an Iraqi cell, would show to the world that Iraq has moved on from Hussein era.
Oh well.
They still do hangings?
In Iraq, yes. Even if he was to die elsewhere he should be hung anyway. He deserves it.

I'd say he deserves a worse death, but at least he's gonna be permanently removed from the gene pool.
Hanging's actually not that bad if your neck snaps from the initial fall, killing you instantly. On the other hand, if your neck doesn't snap, you die a slower death by strangulation.
Either way, the man deserves it.
The verdict is no surprise, because it was reached two weeks ago and held until two days before the US midterms.
Pretty sneaky, Republicans

It's dead meat that's hung.
I'd have been in favor of keeping him on ice till after the violence in Iraq died down. As it is, what'll probably happen is he'll become a martyr figure to the Sunnis and there'll be more death to come.
But we're safe in our own homes, of course.
Yeah, I don't believe in death as capital punishment. *ducks under tomatos and such that are thrown at her*
I do believe in being jailed for life (and by life I mean LIFE...not 30 years). I am glad he officially is dealt with though.
Were all of the trials in Iraq? Or just most of them?
Personally, I believe take him to one of the worst prisons in the world, leave him with the inmates for a few days, lecover his battered and beaten up body, then leave him in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. He'll either die of starvation or insanity.
But, hanging works well, too, as you can get f**ked up by that if it doesn't work properly. But, they need to videotape that, and put it up on the internets.
It may be morally wrong, but this is history in the making, man.

Why, so you can watch it? O....kay.
The social acceptance of blood thirstiness in forums has always fascinated me. Especially since most things like it do not go on here; people on message boards being generally held to higher etiquette than in their normal life.

Yes, so I can watch it, Cycle.
Yes, so I can watch it, Cycle.
Please tell me you're joking. Because wow, that's messed up.
Cycle, look at him...
He loco man! He'll mess you up! Let the man watch what he god damm wants!
Strange people inhabit the internet....
My shop teacher had two good ideas for the Saddam hanging.
1)Pay-Per-View
2) Revive an old TV joke=
After Saddam gets his last rights read, and right before he gets hanged... BAM! Pie in the face!

A televised hanging might be bloodthirsty, but that's just cruel and unusual and disgusting eh.

You really mean that?
It's a dilemma. Keep him alive and he'll see to it he's constantly getting attention. Kill him and he becomes a martyr.
We should throw babies at him until he dies from trauma.
Either that, or yeah someone YouTube the hanging.
