I've heard about slowing down light before.
I just love the whole topic of light. Its a topic most people don't really think much about.

I heard they could almost make it stop completely. Almost.

It must be awesome to turn on a flashlight, then outrun the beam.

IIRC it's an experiment with the "group velocity" exceeding the speed of light. However, this won't help the case of FTL (faster-than-light) communication or travel at all.
