Capcom goes for another LIVE-ACTION Street Fighter movie.
Quote:
October 30, 2006 - A new Street Fighter movie is coming! Forget about the silliness of the 1994 film version that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom are teaming up to produce a new flick based on the classic fighting videogame.
Variety scoops that screenwriter Justin Marks has been asked to pen the script for the movie which will reportedly center around the game's prolific female fighter, Chun Li. As you might expect, the other details of the story are being kept secret.
Marks recently finished writing the screenplay for another project that will likely get fanboys excited, a movie based on the popular 1980s toy line and cartoon series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
According to Variety, Street Fighter is set for a 2008 release; that happens to be the 20th anniversary of the videogame franchise.
Fans of the franchise may remember persistent rumors from recent years about a new Street Fighter film in development with Dolph Lundgren and Van Damme. There was some additional buzz that Australian actress Holly Valance (DOA) would star -- she might not make a bad Chun Li. However, this news appears unrelated to those rumors and should put them to rest once and for all.
My opinion is slightly less pessimistic on the news that this is not a direct sequel of the original movie (I think that's what's being said here).
Hmm.
Instead, you should swear that you're gonna get in your boat, and head up river, and kick that son of a @#%$ film-maker's ass so HARD! that the next Street Fighter film-maker wannabe is gonna feel it.
Wake me up when September (2009) ends. ** sung to the tune of Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" **
urgh, the first live action film was terrible. ^^; i loved it for it's cheesiness, but that's it.
i'm hopeful for this new film, if they make more of an attempt to stick to the games. more ken! more ryu!
Oh what now? Urgh... Capcom, didn't you learn from last time? I'll hold my breath, but I'm not too optimistic. And IGN's article isn't inspiring confidence. For example:

Thanks Capcom. If this proves to be accurate it would seem to be that once again you're ignoring the actual main characters of the SF franchise. Not that I'm saying Chun Li isn't important, but COME ON. Ryu! And Ken! D: They'd better have more of a role than last time.
Oh, and I gotta have a rip at IGN for this one:

"Hey, y'know, Jean Claude Van Damme might not make a bad Guile! OK, so he's too short and the wrong nationality and doesn't resemble his character but hey, he might not be bad!"
"Awesome idea! Hey, y'know Kylie Minogue might not make a bad Cammy! OK so she isn't British in the slightest and can't do a convincing accent, and she's too short, but it could work!"
"Hey! Holly Valance might not make a bad Ch--" Anyone noticing a pattern emerging? Good grief IGN, GET A GRIP. Holly Valance is blatantly not Chinese and I doubt she'd make a good action film star. (No, I haven't seen the DOA movie. I definitely don't want to either for now) No disresepct to her, but I can't see it happening. Still:

Let's be thankful for that. The last thing Capcom need is another poorly cast, badly written joke of a film.
Anyway, that's my ranting done. In a more concise note, I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic about Capcom trying to make a new movie, but unless it's MUCH superior to it's predecessor I can't see me getting excited.

OH GOD NO! EJECT! EJECT!

Well... Technically... Cammy isn't British.
*Shot for getting into the technicalities of the Street Fighter backstory*
That said, I'm acutally looking forward to this one... BUT, only one condition. It's as cheesy as the first one.
Variety scoops that screenwriter Justin Marks has been asked to pen the script for the movie which will reportedly center around the game's prolific female fighter, Chun Li. As you might expect, the other details of the story are being kept secret.
*rephrased for true meaning*

As you might expect, the shower scene cointained wherein will be five hours long. Complimentary tissue boxes will be passed out with each ticket for the teenaged boys who will no doubt be seeing this movie to go watch Chun Li.....fight.
Everyone else: you must defeat Cooki's Sheng Long to stand a chance
Since when could girls get Sheng Longs? That sounds disgustingly vulgar.
If it's nearly as campy as the original, then I can't say no to something like that... Awful movies have so much potential in the way of humor, especially if it's unintentional. You know it.
Starry summed up exactly what I was going to say.
Also, am I the only one who finds Chun-Li in the games to be kind of creepy-looking? Her musculature is so unrealistic it's scary n__N
Yet, Wonderbat, it's also so HOT at the same time! ^_________^
If you swing towards muscle-bound women. =P
Holly Valance in the film? There's a huge point for irony. Both Kylie Minogue and Holly Valance got their start on the same T.V show here in Aus (Neighbours), they both moved on to music careers and if memory serves Holly Vallance is also sporting her own fake british accent these days. If they cast her as Cammy then they might as well kiss the film goodbye.

With disgustingly large Sheng Longs.

Except for the fact that Holly Valance is hotter.

To be truthful, Ryu and Ken provide very little basis for a decent story, and so far Street Fighter 2 the Animated Movie, Street Fighter Alpha the Motion Picture, and Street Fighter Alpha: Generations ALL focus on Ryu and Ken as the main characters. What's more, Chun Li's story could be a lot more interesting story, focusing on her Interol detective side on tracking down Bison and Shadaloo.
The problem with the original movie was that nothing was right, Ryu and Ken weren't even who they are in the games, character nationalities weren't correct, some good guys were bad, some bad guys were good, no one but Zangief looked like their in game characters, dispite some being easier than others. Guile being the main character was the least of its failings.
Still, if this can actually become a good movie then I'd be very happy, but if it's anything like the old one then they should scrap it now.
