Hey guys. Glad to know that this place is back up and running. Was lonely in the Sonic parts for a while.

Say, I know that this isn't the expertise of a lot of you, but sometimes it's good to hear from someone on the outside. So if possible, I want to get some serious opinions see if this is just me, or if the feeling is widely mutual.

As you all know, I'm the game show freak around here. Last week, I received a rejection notice from Millionaire. It's the most recent in a long line of rejections for shows like from Millionaire and Amazing Race in the last 6 years. And it's getting me a little frustrated. And before you start breaking out the violins on me, hear me out.

I have a literal double Whammy working against me. First, I'm from Jersey, which means Millionaire and the new Ken Jennings show (which I failed the test for) are the only games in town. Anything else, I'd have to pay out of pocket to go to LA with no guarantees (plus a working knowledge that I'm not a strong Jeopardy player). Second, I'm a teacher, non-tenured at that. So, I'm putting myself at risk with every attempt. And just imagine if I get on, especially with the Race...

It gets me so frustrated because anyone that is just getting to know me will always ask why I never go on a game show (read: Jeopardy), and anyone that really knows me keeps telling me I've got my whole life to get on these shows. The thing they all forget is that most TV executives today can't or won't keep shows on forever. I got news for you: Chances are that if I'm lucky enough to have tenure in a couple years, the same shows that are on now WON'T be on in 5 years. And given the way that game shows are deteriorating on TV, I don't like the prospect of the future.

So this brings me to my questions for all of you:

> Am I right in busting my butt for these shows now?
> What exactly do YOU see for the genre in 5, 10 or 15 years?
> Will any current shows still be on in the times I mentioned?
> Will the shows that come on in the future be worth watching?

I don't know, you tell me if I'm going nuts, cuz it's all eating me alive.

Will the shows that come on in the future be worth watching?

What exactly do YOU see for the genre in 5, 10 or 15 years?

I think so...if you think that each gameshow has recieved an even wider audience than the one before it, there is a big guarantee that the one you might be accepted onto will get loads of hits.
I'm not sure how to answer the rest of those questions, so I'll leave the rest up to the other guys.
Don't get so worked up over it- you do have plenty of time to get onto one in the future.
I hope that was of help- if not please eat this reply.

Even if some gameshows do fail, there will always be new and tackier game shows to contest on, so don't worry.

All your preconcieved ideas about gameshows will be destroyed once you go on one - they're practically scripted.

If it's what you want to do then go for it, if it's worth it to you to spend a large amount of your time trying to get a spot on a TV show then you might as well. Keep in mind of course that this shows get thousands and thousands of applicants. I bet Jeopardy and Millionare waitlists years long.

My mom wanted to be on Wheel of Fortune over 20 years ago, she entered a local Wheel of Forture radio constest and got on the show. It was my first TV appearance (in my Mom's tummy of course) :D

There will be a few left. There have been game shows practically since the dawn of color TV. I think it's already showing that people want scripted TV though, look at the most popular shows 5 years ago (Survivor, Millionare, etc) as opposed to now (Desperate Housewives, the OC). There aren't alot of original ideas being used.

> Will any current shows still be on in the times I mentioned?
Who knows? That's like asking what technology we'll be using 10 years from now. New entertainment concepts could come around and change TV formats or it could stay the same.

> Will the shows that come on in the future be worth watching?
I can't see into the future, neither can anyone else here.

Hey, Brian! Nice seeing you again.

Personally, I think that in the future tv might not be as powerful an influence as it is. Maybe it will be overseas, what with "second word countries" becoming wealthier and establishing media industries. I can see you becoming really popular on an Indian game show or something.

As for the US, I think there will be a lot more independent internet-only shows, what with internet connection speeds getting faster and faster, more people getting access to high speed internet and computers with more available hard disk space. With homogenized and restrictive the major networks are, I can see the push for new shows coming from independents.

So your dream might come true... but not in exactly the way you're expecting. Dreams are funny that way. 🙂
