Thiago Andrade Guedes apparently died after agreeing that whoever lost the game would be killed with his family - just as it happened in the game

Wow....he really took the game seriously.

Oh no, seems games keep getting badder and badder raps. This is just insane. Taking things to the extreme? No,no much worse.

O_o Thats really crazy. I couldn't imagine that ever happening to me, or going through with it if I lost.

It's obviously mentally unstable people like this who give the rest of roleplaying a bad name.

This reads like that gawdawful Jack Chick tract on why roleplaying is the spawn of Satan, will turn you to black magic and send you straight to Hell.

It's like half of the population in South America has gone insane with all the war and civil war and unrest, ridiculous murders and crimes and crap for the past decade. I'm not surprised that insanity is finally taking place.

I'm not saying SILLY BRAZILLIANS, I'm just saying that I'm surprised it's really taken this long for people to start going crazy with all the BS that happens in SA

Sam: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 presents: Jack Chick's "Dark Dungeons"

The rest of the thread: Actually, I just agree with Sam. My first D&D group had two mentally unstable players. One of them chose to seek help and quit the game, two others quit the group to help support him. The other refuses to admit she has a problem, and is left in a party of two where they just make characters and play D&D with just one player and a DM...

They're both great people, and they didn't do things like this (nor would they think about it).

As the third edition Player's Handbook (or was it the Dungeon Master's Guide?) said, these are just games. They shouldn't affect life that seriously.

whoa...

Ok now thats a big sign that someone needs to stop what they are doing.

Sure Russian Roulette was bad but, ouch....

Although this is kinda like the joke off of an episode of Reno 911, where they get a call for a disturbance and find out that one of the guys got shot with an arrow during a D'N'D game. The culprit tries to run and shouts "I have boots of Fleeing!!" but the cop shoots him. One of the funniest skits I've ever seen.

*puts eyes back in sockets*
Whoa! How dumb can you get?!
This is like the story about that boy who killed his little cousin while wrestling with her after playing a wrestling game, but worse. In this story, the people KNEW what they were doing.

How? It was just a straight forward news report with no editorialism in it.

Don't blame the game. Blame the player.

>_>

I'm sorry, I really am.

*sigh*

Humanity never ceases to amaze me with it's stupidity. I'm sorry that the guy and his family died, but I can't feel any sympathy, since he allowed it. I swear, the average IQ of humanity is dropping.

Yeah, that's just sad.

BTW, regarding Jack Chick, read this interview wih Michael A. Stackpole, the sci-fi author. He was hired by TSR back in the day to counter all the accusations about Dungeons and Dragons. It's a really comprehensive and persuasive article. If you thought roleplaying games were evil before, then this should convince you otherwise.

pc.gamespy.com/articles/5...635p1.html

Also, check the Escapist. www.theescapist.com/basic_gaming_faq.htm
It's hilarious. It has video clips of this guy trying all the D&D spells as a satire of all the idiots who think they work.

BTW, I wrote an English paper about the subject. If anyone wants it, I can send it via e-mail (It's a microsoft word file), or post it up here.

I never meant to imply that it read as a deliberately biased article at all - just that the story read as apparently over-the-top as Chick's writing.

I can hardly believe that this guy let himself and his family be killed.

Are RPGs gonna be attacked now because of some psychos taking them way too seriously? This guy must have had something wrong with his head to believe that his RP character was the same as him in real life.

And I thought I was hard on Role-Play...
