I'm surprised no one's brought the topic up here. (Thread title blatantly stolen from TSF... XD)
For one thing, it's only three pages long (and if you count the first page that basically shows who's indicted, then that's four). That's not a lot of material for an indictment (especially on DeLay, where he's barely mentioned).
And when it comes to DeLay, it's basically saying that he knows someone who's done something illegal. Gee. Might as well hand out indictments to practically every other politician in America.
Here's some quotes from the article Dub posted.
Quote:
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, of California, called the indictment "the latest example that Republicans in Congress are plagued by a culture of corruption at the expense of the American people."
And...
Quote:
And Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said DeLay was " neither the beginning nor the end of the Washington Republicans' ethical problems."
And thus the pot calls the kettle black.
There's not enough meat yet to charge DeLay (and if it turns out he's guilty, throw him in the slammer like anyone else), so we just have to wait and see. I believe that unless there's more, this is an egregious abuse of prosecutorial power.
This pretty much sums it up (a quote from someone whose name I forget):
"We regret the people of Texas will once again have their taxpayer dollars wasted on Ronnie Earle's pursuit of headlines and political paybacks. Ronnie Earle began this investigation in 2002, after the Democrat Party lost the Texas state legislature to Republicans. For three years and through numerous grand juries, Ronnie Earle has tried to manufacture charges against Republicans involved in winning those elections using arcane statutes never before utilized in a case in the state. This indictment is nothing more than prosecutorial retribution by a partisan Democrat."
One last thing on Earle: he went through five grand juries to get the indictment charges filed. He failed. He struck gold on #6.
No matter what the "pot" does Ultra, if the kettle is committing a felony by state law then I think they have due cause to criticize. Besides what you quoted are just the mudslinging that most politicians in D.C. throw at eachother on a daily basis, they don't mean anything except for a soundbite for the local news.
Indeed.
I have read a lot on this subject, and I have some reason to believe that DeLay was not totally innocent of this. There's just too much stuff with his lobbyists that he did for them and vice versa to say that something didn't happen.
If he gets convicted, of course, is another question. I don't know. :p
Like I said. If he's guilty, throw him in the slammer.
Whot she said. Also take into consideration this:
Earle denied any partisan motivation, telling reporters that 12 of the 15 public corruption cases he has prosecuted involved Democrats. His record on high-profile corruption cases has been mixed.
"The law says that corporate contributions to political campaigns are illegal in Texas," he said. "The law makes such contributions a felony. My job is to prosecute felonies. I'm doing my job."
DeLay, the Republican leader in the House of Representatives since 2002, called Earle "a partisan fanatic."
That sounds iffy to me. 12 of 15 cases were Democratic corruption cases. Meaning only 3 so far, not including DeLays, have only been against Republicans. The man is right, he's only doing his job, which I applaud. We need more people like that. And yet this guy is crying "OMG he leans toward his side!" Sounds like there's something to hide by saying things without merit.
And it took 6 grand juries to do anything. Would you think maybe he didn't have proper evidence? That's why it's called investigation. You pull up as much as you can to make it valid. It would not have succeeded hadn't he not brought something major up.
And when it comes to DeLay, it's basically saying that he knows someone who's done something illegal. Gee. Might as well hand out indictments to practically every other politician in America.
You don't know that. That's why it's an investigation. It could be much deeper than you think.
For once, I agree with Bush. Just let the legal process run its gears. With time we'll know if this was all BS or time well spent to take more scum out of power.
