It was just on newsroudn, i'm looking for news but, hey.,,

A bottle nosed whale (I think) has just swam up the River Thames, struggling against the shallow water, in the crappy muddy river and strugling not to get caught on boats or in fishing lines...

www.bloomberg.com/apps/ne...fer=europe

Wish I could get some pictures, but it was... wow, on Newsround (kids news programme on the BBC)
Slightly unexpected.

what on earth was it doing there..? it must've been ill or confused (or became so, that water always looks horribly polluted :p ) to have gone UP the thames.

i hope they manage to get it out in the end, as they say in the second report that it seems to be getting wounded.

Aye, that just proves that the Thames is getting cleaner.

All we need now is some Sharks and then we got a tourist attraction for all the mad surfers. :D

Apparently, they've winched it out of the water and're transporting it out of the Thames by barge. They still don't know if it's well enough to release, though.

I'm waiting for the Thames to have a salmon run. Then we know that it's really clean. 🙂

they just reported on the news that the whale died just miles away from where they were going to release it. the stress of being in the harness and out of the water seemed to be too much for it.

Wow, that really sucks. Hope another whale doesn't try to swim there again.

/cynicism

Especially since the operation to rescue it cost around 50k. Mind you, I guess it wasn't a total loss for London - the onlookers must have been buying refreshments, right?

They didn't spend that much when the Dolphin turned up in Greenwich :(

Just shows what a cute sea creature can get if it swims the few extra miles to parliment.

And it wasn't jus tthe refreshment guys, the newspapers loved it, the news programmes had a great scoop and there was fun for all the family as they watched the poor mammal struggle against the current...

...

Oh well, they tried and I suppose that's what counts. Still, it's one for the history books, that whale will be famous. You know you get these books saying "What happened on the day I was born," the one for that one in 2006 will say "Whale swims up the river Thames"

...

Actually, on the day I was borne a poison gas cloud descended on London, hows that for providence?

Don't know or care what happened on the day I was spat out. I assume it was something about bad hair and awful music.

I was born on a day when nothing happened. AT ALL, according to Wikipedia.
Though I was born between, "March 13 - In eastern Turkey, an earthquake registering 6.8 on the Richter scale kills over 500. March 17 - 29 are killed and 242 injured when a suicide car-bomb goes off in the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires," those two events.
