When people think of Hawaii, they think tropical jungle, lava, and surfing but never the prime skiing/snowboarding condition at the highest snow covered peaks.

In Africa, people think the savannah (sp?) and wild animals and not the city slums.

In South America, there is the amazon. Few people think about the desert located west of the Andes and the Amazon jungle that also serves as a... pacific beach(???).

Then there is poor Canada, "The Great White North", known for snow and mousse despite it also having all four season (fall, winter, ice age, and subzero :P, sorry had to say that joke just once) and a desert (with snakes no less) (???).

Due to odd number of Hurricanes hitting the U.S coast and some comments on this board, what features is your country/state/province/whatever known for that would surprise most tourist/foreigners?

What is my area most known for? Hmmm...

...being where Bush is right now works best, I guess. Or rather, would be if he wasn't in Argentina right this second.

'Nuff said.

Well actually, I haven't had a cup of tea in years, I don't wear a top hat, and I don't dress in burberry (I do like crumpets though). I think tourists would find modern day England rather...plain. But it depends where you go in England I suppose.

There is one thing that you can always associate with England though: Rain. And lots of it. The good ol' rain never lets us down.

Blue said it all really, Rain, Crumpets, Chicken Tikka Masalla, and unhealthy binge drinkers wandering around with a kebab at midnight and scaring anyone sensible out at that time.

Also Rain.

Texas is known for big oil, the beginnings of W, big hair, beauty pageants and tank tops 10 months of the year.

Austin is known for government workers, Dell computers, college kids, University of Texas, old hippies, vegan taco stands, artists, feminists, homosexuals, liberals, and being "the best place in the country to be single".

People are amazed at how we live here in Oklahoma. They're like "You live in houses?" "You drive automobiles?" "You listen to music other than country?" And we're like "Well...yeah. Where have you been?"

Cincinnati, Ohio... the one place where "chili" means something COMPLETELY different than whatever the heck it means elsewhere in the world... what DOES "chili" mean elsewhere, anyway? 😛

Kentucky, land of Mammoth Cave, Red Rover Gorge, Dodge cars, bluegrass music, Moonshine, bourbon and University of Kentucky basketball.

Trivia-it used to be that if it wasn't from Bourbon county, KY, it could not legally be called bourbon.

Singapore is known for its uber-strict laws. Carry a little heroin, and you're dead. Literally. Hanging.

Oral sex is illegal.

It has no resources but the people themselves.

We jumped from Third World to First World in about 4 decades. :D

That's not all, of course. For more, go to those anti-Singapore sites all over the net. >>

Michigan is mostly either known for the mass amount of hunting done in the UP(Upper Penisula), or Detroit. That smoldering hellhole. People also acossiate Canada and Cold with Michigan for some reason. Now, the United States: we all know what people see that country as. ^^;;
