Anyone good at riddles? The chorus of this song was part of my sig for a while, and when someone commented on it I decided I'd set it up as a topic.
Truth is (call me sad if you wish) I've been trying to work out the meaning of this song for years, and I'm still completely at a loss. Some might say there is no meaning, and the words are random, but I dissagree because 1) Some of the sentence structures and wording are really unusual and clever, looking like someone has spent some considerable time on them, and 2) the song is called "The Riddle", which in itself suggests a hidden meaning.
So I open it to everyone here: WHAT DOES THIS RIDDLE MEAN??? Below is a copy of the song lyrics (as much of them as I can work out anyway. some parts are a little unclear). Any ideas?
THE RIDDLE ~ Nick Kershaw.
I got two strong arms, blessings of Babylon, time
To carry on and try for sins and false alarms
So to a miracle of rain
Wise men say
(chorus)
Near a tree by a river there's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Arran goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon in the vail of the night
For a strainge kind of fashion there's a wrong and a right
But he'll never ever fight over you
I got plans for us. Nights in the scullery and days
Instead of me all alone, what to discuss
Hope for anything that's right
Wise men fighting over you
It's not me you see. Pieces of valentine and just
This song of mine to keep from burning history
Seasons of vassaling and gold
Wise men fold
(chorus)
I got time to give. Slide-ups in corridors are okay
When I would have liked the tears on Newber hill
Thanks to the calling of a while
Wise men's child
(chorus, rept. to fade)
(Words are largely accurate, but may be slightly off in places. I couldn't find word listings anywhere on the net.)
