hey everyone,
i'm Joe.i have a few questions about sonic's past.i know sonic almost been alot of different animals.but i was wounding if sega had different names for sonic base on what animal they were trying out.like if they had different names when they were thinking about him being an dog? and is it true sonic was made into a comic book before being made into an video game mascot?i think it's false.
thank you for your time.

I don't think anyone knows any internal names for the characters. I'd heard that rabbit-Sonic was going to be called "Feel the Rabbit", but I dunno how legitimate that rumor is. I do know, though, that "Feel" later applied to Ristar, and later on, they decided that poor Feel there would be much better off as a Magic than a rabbit*.
As for Sonic being a comic before a video game character? False. He was designed to be a video game character first, end of story. Now, a promotional comic may have come out first, but since that was to promote the video game, he was still a video game character before a comic/cartoon one.
(*Well, okay, that last one was a joke, but still.)
If I can recall correctly, Sonic was promoted sometime in 1990 on a poster for a Dreams Come True's album--something like that.
Also Sonic was almost Eggman wearing pajamas.
well sonic was orginial going to be teddy roosevelt in pj but they give that idea to dr.robotnik.i wounder what their were going to name the american wolf idea.i like to see more dogs and wolves in the sonic universal both games, comics, anime.

Reading this gunblade guy's posts makes my head hurt.
by the way does anyone have any photos of the Armadillo sonic almost became.i have photos of the rabbit, bull dog, american wolf, man.but not the armadillo.
-Joe
Post these photos perhaps please?
*Nodnod* I've seen the pictures of the concept Sonic's too, they were posted on the MoFo when they first got around the net. Never heard anything about an armadillo. Are you sure you've not mis-interpretted someone saying that Mighty the Armadillo was a Sonic clone?
Actually it was mentioned he was going to be an armadillo but the name didn't go over too well. They wanted an animal that could roll into a ball but have a slightly better name.
i'm sure Craig Bayfield
i think sonic almost became mighty and later on sega created mighty.i like it if they used all those different animals sonic almost became and made them into characters in the sonic universe.even the anime, comic book, video game universe too.

nearly right, he was first advertised in a dreams come true concert. sega used posters, flyers and a truck.
i only found out recently that they made the tunes for the first two sonic games. ^^; (props to rudy for all that info!)
Yes, I remember reading something about the poster at The Dreams Come True concert. (I think it was at the CulT.) It had a pun on it that went something like, "He's not so bad for having spines." The pun was the Japanese word for "spines" is the same for "cuss word," or something along those lines.
"Actually it was mentioned he was going to be an armadillo but the name didn't go over too well. They wanted an animal that could roll into a ball but have a slightly better name."
I heard the deciding factor was that while they could both roll into a ball, only the hedgehog had the distinctive spines that made for not only a more dynamic character appearance, but also gave the idea of a spinning attack more 'oomph'.
i don't know i throught the american wolf character was cool.i wounder if their were going to give him an american name.he looks dumb but i bet they could do an better design for him.i like to see an updated look of american wolf.i love to write an platform type story with the american wolf.
-Joe
Yeah, can someone give a link or post a picture of what Sonic was going to be please?
Thanks for the pictures. I have actually just seen the rabbit one before, and I think it looks cool, but too much like Disney.
yeah he doesn't look like some character in the early 90's maybe the early 60's but he looks kind of anime too.but i think they recreated feel the rabbit and change it to cream.and used the name feel the rabbit for feel the magic.i think they might of also used the bulldog and the american wolf.but i'm not sure about the bulldog but the american wolf could be the group of wolves in the sonic series.and i guess the reason mighty looks like sonic is because he almost became sonic.
