It's BD Joe, cool.

I wonder does this mean that the Axel from Streets of Rage is in instead of Axel from Crazy Taxi

Crazy Taxi! Good heavens, it's so obvious in retrospect.

Come to think of it, with Space Channel, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Monkey Ball, Jet Set Radio and Billy Hatcher. A vast majority of Sega's recognizable IP's were created about the time of the Dreamcast and it's demise. Makes you wonder how prosperous Sega would have been if the console was a success. Compare them to Nintendo all you want, but you see that stark rise in intellectual properties and weigh it against Nintendo's stagnation and unwillingness to deviate from their popular franchises.

I think gaming may have benefitted Sega's innovative trends towards the mid 2000's.

I like it. It's not "Dreams Of An Absolution" good, but as usual Lee/Bentley does a great job.

Phantasy Star Online track confirm.

It’s great to see so much of the old classic Sega games return to the TV screen. In tune with these classics, the confirmed stages in this game vary from the bright, welcoming beachside of Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes to a futuristic and whimsical Phantasy Star Online stage.

Awesome. I wonder if the stage is Pioneer 2?

Edit: SOL just confirm there no PSO track and the guy who did the preview made a mistake .

Wow, both cars look great. Although Akira is kind of sticking out a bit.
Opa Opa is one of my favorite Sega characters and one I really wasn't expecting to get in. So I'm super happy about that.

No, I'm not at all bitter.

Its kind of hard to say Ristar is more "All Star" then Opa Opa. Considering Opa has been in about 6 times more games then Ristar and a hand full of cameos.
Don't take that as a bash against Ristar though; I love that game and really wish he could replace someone. Billy Hatcher, Shadow, or Knuckles to name a few.

I'm not really so bitter about Opa Opa getting in. Lord knows characters like him NEED more screen time than the likes of Shadow.

What really agitates me is that Banjo Kazooie is included when neither are Sega characters or even appeared on a Sega released console. At least Opa Opa appeared on the Game Gear and a couple other Sega consoles.

How do either of them fit in in a Sega All-Stars game?

Anyone play the demo? Even with 2 playable characters (one being Banjo) and one track; the game is really fun. Pretty challanging too.
I definately think it is worth my $50.

Sol from Sumo Digital interview.

Just as with Sega Superstars Tennis, we’d love to have got in more, but we have a finite budget and timeframe. We did lots of research to see what characters people wanted in SST but didn’t appear which is mostly why you see Ryo from Shenmue in there. That’s almost purely down to fan requests.
I know there’s been a lot of fan call’s this time for Vectorman and Ristar too, but they should have shouted more at the end of SST! By the time they were being requested heavily, we’d locked the character roster!
I can’t say just yet who I would have like to included either – then I’ll have de-confirmed someone as not being in. I keep getting told off for that

Well there you go Kayla. You should have shouted louder.

Yeah, like I believe that.

If they were so concerned about the budget, then why bother to get the rights for Banjo Kazooie when they already owned Vectorman and Ristar?  As far as I know, they still belong to Sega so lookie there, two characters that they wouldn't have to buy the rights to.  Hell, despite the cries for NiGHTS, he only got a cameo at the start and end of the races.  They can't blame the fans, because I've been following the development of this game here, at Sonic Retro, and at the GHZ, and I have seen nothing about fan requests.

Ristar has had cameos in at least three other Sega games, so don't you dare try to tell me that Sega isn't aware that he's a character that fans would want.

So, again I say, screw you Sega.  I'll stick with my Mega and Gems collections, thank you very much.

I'm sure that's because Microsoft/Rare approached Sumo, not the other way around.

And I like how you're gonna be missing out on the one Sega game that could be worth it because one character isn't in.

I'm sad Ristar's not in too. But get over it.

Oh, believe me, I'm hardly missing out.

I'm not a Sega fangirl anymore.  I willingly pass over Sega games.  I haven't bought a game produced by Sega since Adventure DX.  I will be passing on this as well.  Ristar would have been the only thing that would actually make me consider buying this, and since he's not in it, I'm not interested.

Helks yea Kayla! Stick to your guns girl! It definitely sucks Ristar couldn't make it in. And Vectorman...my gosh...how BA would that have been? lol *high fives for no longer being a SEGA fangirl* I'm no longer a fanboy to the point where I purposely buy SEGA developed/published games. Still though...SEGA was my first love so I may pick this up after a few years or so.

Sega was my first love too, but I grew sick of the Sonic Cycle, and just called quits on the relationship.

Sonic 4 would have to be comparable to the second coming of Christ in order to win me back.

Well, let's see if Sega stays true to their word on downloadable characters and tracks in the future. Personally though, I see no excuse for NiGHTs not being playable. He's on of the most popular non-Sonic Sega characters, if not THE most popular non-Sonic Sega character. I mean, the whole idea of "Sega All-Stars" is sort of an oxymoron. The only real household name Sega has produced, ever, is Sonic the Hedgehog. Sure, they have a roster of other titles... and some hardcore fans follow, but outisde of Phantasy Star, I don't really see any Sega franchises with MASSIVE followings.

The idea of Sega All Stars doesn't work the way saaaay, a Nintendo or Capcom all-stars title would work. Nintendo has TONS of household names in their roster. Anyone who has ever owned a Nintendo console has at least heard of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Star Fox, Pokemon, Kirby, and Metroid. And then there's that massive list of less known, yet noteworthy titles to add to the list.

Just like Capcom, you have Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mega Man, Devil May Cry as iconic titles, and a crap load more to add to the list.

Heck, even a game titled "Marvel All Stars Racing" would bring in more familiar names than Sega. To be honest, Sonic in the title is what is carrying this game. I personally couldn't care less about what other "Sega Characters" are in this game. Personally, it would've been nicer to see a roster of say, 20 Sonic characters, name it "Sonic All Stars Racing" and called it a day. Still, we've got key Sonic characters. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, Shadow, and the most demanded of them all, Big the Cat. I still personally think it would've been a better marketing strategy to cut the out-of-place realistic characters, and just made it a Sonic game. Give us Rouge, Cream, Espio, Charmy, Vector, Omega, Silver(just to stomp him out), Metal Sonic, and pleh, even the Babylon Rogues. Eh? Eh?

Still, I've been hearing nothing but good things about this. And that makes me happy. I want some sort of party game featured on game days with SONIC in it. Too many people cried and gave up on the Riders series, and the Olympic Games. "Wahhh! This game sucks! I don't wanna play this anymore! Put on Mario Kart or Brawl!"

*sigh*

I'm hoping this will finally be the Sonic game that changes all of that.

The reason Nintendo has so many household names is because they actively pushed those names. Unlike Nintendo, Sega only focused on Sonic and, possibly, Virtua Fighter.

Mario was, like Sonic, the first big name for Nintendo. They then released the likes of Zelda, Kirby, and the other franchises that you mentioned. Once they realized that they were as popular as their first "heavy hitter," they kept making games for them and getting those names out in the general public.

It's not like the interest and critical acclaim wasn't there for any of the three in question. Ristar, at the time it was released, was one of the highest scoring Mega Drive games of 1995, and EGM even awarded Vectorman the Best Sega Mega Drive game of the same year. Opa Opa even appeared in an anime.

Sega could've done the same with Ristar, Vectorman, and Opa Opa as Nintendo did with Link, Kirby, and the rest of the crew. But no. They had to milk Sonic and Sonic alone until he dried up, and look where that got them.

There's absolutely no reason that Sega couldn't have had a pantheon like Nintendo or Capcom, aside from sheer laziness.

I am pretty sure Nintendo and Capcom as just bad as Sega when it come to their franchises. When was the last time Ice Climbers, F-Zero, Captain Commando, Dino Crisis, Star Gladiator, Pikmin, Power Stone, Final Fight, Breath of Fire, Donkey Kong, Pilotwings, Star Fox, EarthBound (Mother), Wave Race, Ghost N' Goblin, Darkstalkers,  Daigasso! Band Brothers, Red Earth, Strider, Cyberbots, Rival Schools, Son Son, Tech Romancer, Gotcha Force, Viewtiful Joe, Clock Tower, Chaos Legion, Haunting Ground, Killer 7, Onimusha and God Hand got proper sequels or, in Capcom case, are even aknowledge that they exist?

Also I like to point out that only Mario, Pokemon, Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Mega Man are household names. The rest are "meh" in people minds. There are still gamers out there who refer Samus as Metroid Girl.

When the original Smash Bros came out, Kirby, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, and even Yoshi were still household names. I don't think a single soul with an N64 didn't know who these characters were. Adding that to the already popular Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon. I could see some people scratching their heads on Captain Falcon and Ness at the time. I'll admit, because I never had a Nintendo system before N64, I had never heard of Metroid. But since then, it's safe to say Samus and the Metroid series has become a very familiar name in the gaming world. By the time we got to Melee and Brawl, we really started digging deep through the junk pile for characters. Some of which were very obscure before, but made popular and known BECAUSE of the game, like Fire Emblem. And then you have Wario, who I personally think should have been playable since the first game, with all of his spin-off titles.

Yeah, even though we haven't seen much of Kirby, Star Fox, or DK as of late, people still instantly recognize them on sight.

Now we have Sega. Now you can't say the word "Hedgehog" to a living soul without them automatically thinking about Sonic, unless they've been living under a rock for the past twenty years. An All-Star if I've ever seen one. But come on... AiAi? NiGHTS? Ulala, Billy Hatcher? That guy from Jet Set Radio whatever that even I've only vaguely heard of? I mean, aside from the last guy, I know who these people are ONLY as a Sega fan. But to anyone who didn't own a Dreamcast or a Saturn(and believe me, that's A LOT of people), these characters are just completely irrelevant.

If you were to ask me who I personally think is the most familiar Sega icon under Sonic I'd say (Shadow) probably NiGHTS(who isn't even playable in this), and below that, I'd go as far as saying the extinct Ecco the Dolphin. But aside from Sonic and Co. not a single one of these "Sega All Stars" is even any more familiar to the public eye than Kirby, someone who in all fairness, hasn't had a real MAJOR title since the N64. And yes, I know he's had spin-off titles on the DS and Gamecube since, but I'm talking a major platforming title.

I still think they'd be better off taking that one good approach from Sonic Riders, and just call it a "Sonic" and maybe have five unlockable Sega character from different titles.

My point exactly. If Sega had played their cards right, they could have their own version of Smash Bros. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to have Sonic, NiGHTS, Ristar, and the rest of them going at it without being confined to a vehicle?

Can you see Nights and Ristar in a fighting game? Ristar's attack is pretty much limited to a grab and face attack. Nights can grab and loop around. I don't see much else that they could do.
Sure the idea of Sega characters fighting each other is cool, but some of those character are not fit to do it.

Would anyone have imagined Mario being a successful fighter when he first started out? At first, all he could do was jump on enemies and flame them with the occasional fire flower. Now look at all the abilities he's got in the Smash Bros. series. There's no reason Ristar and NiGHTS couldn't get expanded move sets as well.

I could easily see NiGHTS having a move set similar to Mewtwo or Pikachu, but with Ideya energy instead of psychic energy or electricity. He could even use his invisible flute in a manner like Jigglypuff uses Sing or Mewtwo uses his Hypnosis.

As for Ristar, there are lots of things he could do in the Smash Bros. series with grabs as seen here. He could throw them, bash into them or slam them. Not to mention with his extending arms, he'd have one the better grab ranges in the game.
