Here's a bit of a change from the "Name that thing!" topics.
Here's how it works: two Sonic games are listed, and the first game to recieve six votes wins that round. Then the next two games are voted on in a similar matter. Eventually we'll come back to the games we voted for originally, and continue on with them. The only rule is - you can't vote twice.
So, to start us off:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive/Genesis)
2. Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System/Game Gear)
I vote for the Mega Drive incarnation.

Seriously though, it doesn't matter if GG Sonic 1 isn't canon, it's whether we prefer one or the other, personally I prefer the GG version, as I have been playing the MD version for so many years, it's good to play a variation on the original.

MEGADRIVE VERSION FOR MEEE!
since the GG version had about half the levels, insane difficulty curve (Green Hills Zone Act 3 anyone?) and the fact that it played the same as Sonic 1...pretty much.
Mega Drive, but the Master System one was still quite enjoyable, dispite the insane difficulty.
S2 Mega Drive. Although the GG one was pretty cool as well.
I'd have voted S1 SMS though.. but the topic moved too fast! DD:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the mega drive was the first EVER game I ever played. So its Mega Drive/Genesis for me!

Oh. And I guess Sonic 1 Genesis. The Gamegear one was pretty good, but I can't seem to grade them fairly given the technilogical prowess of the systems and whatnot. (Which is odd, considering I usually pride myself on such an ability.)

They're dead even for me. I honestly can't see what makes the GG version so difficult for most people...I never had a problem with it.
Genesis. I'd almost go for the Game Gear for its unique little atmosphere and difficulty, but Sonic 2 for the GEN was my first game! memories.

While SegaSonic gives me a fair amount of glee, Sonic CD's gotta get my vote.
Never played the first, so I gotta say SonicCD. =/

I'm sure as the contest moves on, we'll have the "winners" against eachother, so you WILL have heated battles such as Sonic 3 vs Sonic & Knuckles and such, but for now, let's get the basics over and done with.
And although I HAVE played SegaSonic arcade, I still found Sonic CD insanely more enjoyable, it was just Awesome.

I loved Arcade because it was so different but CD wins it for me. First time I saw that game on display and watched the animated opening I was floored. "MOOOM I NEEEEED A SEGACD!!"

Yeah, Zack's got it right. There's a large library of games to go through, but it will end up with some of the more popular ones fighting it out.

Sonic Spinball had an interesting atmosphere, but I SUCK at pinball games, and it took me over eight years to beat it. Yes, friggen eight -- I'm never playing that game again.

Like I said, I had a Game Gear years before I had a Genesis and Sonic 2 was so different from Sonic 2 on the Genesis that I would play at my friends house. I got Sonic Chaos and I loved how close it was to the Genesis games in terms of controlls and graphics.
Still one of the best Sonic games ever IMHO
Sonic Chaos, all the way. It was surprisingly easy (for me), and quite fun.
This is a tough one for me, I loved Spinball, but at the end of the day, Sonic Chaos has Two playable characters, a flying Tails, and traditional Sonic gameplay that we all know and love.
Sonic Chaos gets my vote!
Chaos' special zones were retarded, so I go with Spinnaball.
I don't think I've played Sonic Chaos...but I know I've played Sonic Spinball.
And I hated Sonic Spinball so much I'm sure that Chaos was 10x better -_- (Spinball was WAY to slow for me)
I'm a relativley new fan who started with SA2:B, and not a big fan of the side scrollers (though I did like S3&K). So I'll say Sonic Adventure 2 DC/Battle and Shadow the Hedgehog, Even though most people thought Shadow was crud.

GAME GEAR ALL THE WAY FOR ME
Yes, it had worse graphics, music etc...
But two words wins it for me: Puzzle Mode.
I only played the GG version in SADX, but I still liked the Mega Drive version better. Beating Robotnik in super hard mode is pure madness. x)
Genesis. Today, I still have fun with that game, and I LOVE the multiplayerness.
If anyone has the game, emulator, and what-not, I still seek some competition. 😛
