Check the usual places for the ROM. I ain't tellin'.

But wow. Just wow. First the Sonic 3D Beta and now this - and if anyone has $400 to spare, there are two Game Gear betas to be obtained ($200 each, obviously) - Tails Adventures and Sonic Labyrinth...

I want you to think long and hard about why you wanting Sonic Labyrinth is wrong on so many levels

Not Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Labyrinth BETA. Big difference. One's a crap game. The other gives great insight into the workings of Sega, even if the end game was crap.

And I'm more interested in the Tails Adventures beta myself, although it'll be in untranslated Japanese.

That little position of Sonic sitting on his bum looking defeated has been around for a while. Now we know what it's from. =O

Even if it is an incomplete beta its still sonic labyrinth. We should be looking for a later beta. One more completed. Who knows what the pinnacle of wood zones devolopment was.

I have recently played Tails Adventures finally and beat it. In short, <3

Who knows how many sprite uses Tails's giant black shield helmet could be.

And as a bonus, I got back and (realitivly) mastered Tails Sky Partrol.

As for the Sonic 2 Alpha dump, it sounds fun and seems to be the very holy grail people have been searching for.

Wow, looks like Sonic 2 was an evolutionary dev of Sonic 1. And that running in the wall idea would have been really annoying.

What's really weird is that Hidden Palace was added so early in the game, before the Emerald Hill graphics, and yet was still not included.

Are the triceratops badniks in this one?

All right guys. I've done some exploring, and this is what I've come up with. You'll notice that the level select screen features names from Sonic 1 levels, but selecting them actually takes you to a Sonic 2 level, albeit, with the music from the named zone. Here's what we've got (First zone name is the name of the zone on the level select);

Green Hill Zone = Green Hill zone from Sonic 1. This one has a lot of messed up graphics (Which include the score at the top left of the screen, all the badniks, rings and some bits of scenery) and really bad collison detection with Sonic often running up a hill that doesn't exist.

I found an Eggman item box that had no effect when I jumped on it. Basically, Green Hill is completely intact, even though it looks pretty messed up. All three acts seemed to be complete, but bad collision detection made them near impossible to complete, so I can't verify this.

Messed up bridge graphics.
Eggman item monitor
The messed up sprite is a buzz bomber.
I'm running on air captain!

Marble Zone = Chemical Plant zone from Sonic 2. The beggining of Act 1 is complete minus badniks, until you reach the first sets of pipes, which are missing so you can't continue. Selecting Act 2 starts you in the wall just below where you would normally start Act 1. Act 3 starts in mid-air, but you then land at the start of Act 1. All badniks are missing, along with the chemical water at the bottom of the level.

Someone call Mario! We need pipes!
Wall start!

Spring Yard Zone = Hidden Palace zone. It's basically the same as the Sonic 2 beta. Same badniks, same layout. Even the mysterious life up box showing Tails' face is still there. Selecting Act 2 will start you in a wall.

Selecting Act 3 is another wall start. Pressing right will cause the screen to scroll diagonally down-right, and then you hear Sonic hit the bottom of the screen and die. Pressing left scrolls the scrren, but pushes Sonic out to where you would start in Act 1, excpet there are no enemies and no items this time. When you exit the pipe, you will suddenly come out under water, with a very similar hue to Chemical Plants chemical water. Sonic will move VERY slowly, and since the platforms you would normally leap over aren't there, you have no where to go.

Bat bot is still here...
...So is the Tyranosaurus.
Yeah. I know it's satic, but it does show Tails' face normally.

Labyrinth Zone = Nothingness. You start the act in a weird jumble of background/foreground sprites and you fall to your death. The exact same thing happens in Acts 2 and 3, although the layout of the messy sprites are different.

Labyrinths screwy graphics.
More Labyrinth.

Starlight Zone = Emerald Hill zone. This was the only zone where I didn't have Tails following me. Acts 1+2 are the most complete with a slightly different layout compared to the completed version. There is a variation in the badniks, with a spike bug replacing the monkey.

The boss music (Which is Sonic 1s) starts just before you get to the boss area. The boss flies straight down, instead of at an angle. Eggman also doesn't make his hurt face when you hit him. After defeating him, he flies away really slowly, and then the game ends and returns to the title screen.

At the end up Act 1, when you hit the signpost, you still get Sonics face, but a different looking one. Selecting Act 3 starts you in the wall, and you then fall to your death.

Eggman coming down.
Pull the face dang it!
Spike bug.
New look sign post.

Scrap Brain zone = Hill Top zone from Sonic 2. Act 1 seems to be complete. The lava doesn't hurt, all the badniks are missing. The moving vine platforms don't drop when they reach the end of the lin. The balls with eyes that are normally on the levers are replaced by a generic green ball, whcih still hurts like the eye-ball one does. The tunnels also don't automatically curl you into a ball.

Selecting Act 2 starts off normally, but it then leads to a lava pit and dead end, meaning you can go no further in that Act. Act 3 has messed up graphics and a fall to your death.

Generic green ball.
I fear not your lava!
What's interesting to note is that I died only seconds later due to the level not scrolling down. >>

Final Zone = Hill Top zone again, but has a mid-air start where you fall to the ground. You can then only move a little bit before the ROM freezes.

Special Stage = After selecting this from the level select, my ROM got a blue screen of death.

Other interesting information;
The sound test in the level select contains all the music tracks from Sonic 1.

Am I going crazy, or does sound effect A8 sound like it belongs in Sonic 3?

Tails loses rings from your total when hit.

And that's all I've got. gyserchao (at) gmail.com if you want to get in contact with me about any of it, or to thank me for work that someone else has probably already done. ;)

Meh. I forgot to mention. The flying backwards after running into a wall a high speed got very irritating, VERY fast.

Whoa. So many years have passed since Sonic 2, yet new discoveries are STILL made. It's impressive.
Now what I'm wondering is where this build was leaked from..

A magazine, apparently, though it's heavily believed to be exactly the same build as the one used on Nick Arcade (I believe it was the one Melissa Joan Hart played, albeit awfully) as it has a lot of the same quirks.
